Book Social Accounting Matrices and Multiplier Analysis

Download or read book Social Accounting Matrices and Multiplier Analysis written by Clemens Breisinger and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2009 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This training guide introduces development practitioners, policy analysts, and students to social accounting matrices (SAMs) and their use in policy analysis. There are already a number of books that explain the System of National Accounts and SAM multipliers-some of these are recommended at the end of this training guide. However, most books tend to be quite technical and move quickly from an introduction to more complex applications. By contrast, this guidebook uses a series of hands-on exercises to gradually introduce SAMs and multiplier analysis. It therefore complements more theoretical SAM and multiplier literature and provides a first step for development practitioners and students wishing to understand the strengths and limitations of these economic tools. It is also useful for policy analysts and researchers embarking on more complex SAM-based methodologies. One such methodology is computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling, for which IFPRI has also developed a series of introductory exercises and a standard modeling framework. To download the exercises, go to www.ifpri.org/publication/social-accounting-matrices-and-multiplier-analysis

Book Social Accounting Systems

Download or read book Social Accounting Systems written by F. Thomas Juster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Accounting Systems: Essays on the State of the Art contains essays prepared during a workshop aimed at the development and promulgation of objectives for future work on social accounting, and the making of recommendations to achieve them by evaluating existing demographic and time-based accounting models. The essays describe and evaluate the state of the art of extant empirically based approaches to social accounting. The book opens with an overview chapter that describes the organizations of the Workshop on Social Accounting Systems at which the essays were presented and discussed, the nature of the tasks assigned to authors, and the major themes of workshop discussions. This is followed by separate chapters on time-based social accounting systems and demographic accounting; how subjective social indicators can be related to social accounting systems; and general evaluations of the systems described in the previous chapters. This book will be primarily of interest to social scientists and statisticians concerned with the development and integration of national data systems and with social indicator analyses. They also will be germane to the interests of students of contemporary social change and the quality of life.

Book Poverty and Social Impact Analysis of Reforms

Download or read book Poverty and Social Impact Analysis of Reforms written by Aline Coudouel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and Social Impact Analysis (PSIA) is an approach used increasingly by governments, civil society organizations, the World Bank, and other development partners to examine the distributional impacts of policy reforms on the well-being of different stakeholders groups, particularly the poor and vulnerable. PSIA has an important role in the elaboration and implementation of poverty reduction strategies in developing countries because it promotes evidence-based policy choices and fosters debate on policy reform options. 'Poverty and Social Impact Analysis of Reforms' presents a collection of case studies that illustrate the spectrum of sectors and policy reforms to which PSIA can be applied; it also elaborates on the broad range of analytical tools and techniques that can be used for PSIA. The case studies provide examples of the impact that PSIA can have on the design of policy reforms and draw operational lessons for PSIA implementation. The case studies deal largely with policy reforms in a single sector, such as agriculture (crop marketing boards in Malawi and Tanzania and cotton privatization in Tajikistan); energy (mining sector in Romania and oil subsidies in Ghana); utilities (power sector reform in Ghana, Rwanda, and transition economies, and water sector reform in Albania); social sectors (education reform in Mozambique and social welfare reform in Sri Lanka); taxation reform (Nicaragua); as well as macroeconomic modeling (Burkina Faso).

Book Measuring and Modelling the Activity of Countries and Regions with Social Accounting Matrices

Download or read book Measuring and Modelling the Activity of Countries and Regions with Social Accounting Matrices written by Susana Santos and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) is presented as a tool for measuring and modelling the activity of countries and regions. An SAM-based approach to the study of such activity enables it to be described both empirically and theoretically through numerical and algebraic versions of that same matrix. This approach is presented using the words of those responsible for its foundation: Richard Stone and Graham Pyatt.Applications of the SAM to Portugal and the Azores serve to underline the importance of ensuring consistency with the national and regional accounts when measuring and modelling the activity of countries and regions with SAMs. These applications are based, on the one hand, on SAMs for the Azores and Portugal, which have the same structure and identical characteristics and were constructed to serve as a database for a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and, on the other hand, on a SAM for Portugal, the author's area of research, which was constructed using the above-mentioned SAM-based approach. It is also underlined that such a task can be performed better if all of the part that is measured by the national and regional accounts is included in the study. These same accounts should be considered as the basic sources of information. The comparison of such applications underlines the importance of working with the institutional sectors together with the sectors of activity, as well as with the part relating to the secondary distribution of income together with the primary distribution of income. Also identified within this context are the risks of failing to consider important interactions in the activity of countries and regions, as well as the biases to be found in the analysis of the results.

Book A Basic Needs Policy Model

Download or read book A Basic Needs Policy Model written by Arend Kouwenaar and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1988 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using recent research on Ecuador, this book discusses a social accounting matrix (SAM)-based model for simulating the effects of basic needs policies on various socio-economic groups. Specific parameter choice and specification of relationships allow the general equilibrium model to capture rigidities and occurrences of non-perfect commodity and factor markets. Basic needs satisfaction is described as an output'' resulting from income formation and expenditure, and dynamically linked to the structural processes of household and socio-economic group formation, formation of the labour force and wealth, and labour productivity. Simulations concentrate on the effects of various expenditure, indirect tax and redistributive policies on incomes and basic needs satisfaction.

Book Social and Demographic Accounting

Download or read book Social and Demographic Accounting written by Geoffrey Hewings and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art account of developments and applications of social accounts. It concentrates particularly on the methods of social accounting that Richard Stone, Nobel Laureate in Economics, developed and applied during his long and distinguished career. The contributors to the volume examine applications of social accounts in economics and demography, addressing issues of new formulations and specifications at the national and regional levels.Economic Structure and issues of structural change are investigated within the context of social accounts matrices, and Linear Expenditure Systems are used to model population change and household consumption. The importance of social accounts matrices (SAM) in generating Computation General Equilibrium (CGE) models, and the enormous potential that both SAM and CGE models have for policy analysis are stressed.

Book Linear SAM Models for Inequality Changes Analysis an Application to the Extremadurian Economy

Download or read book Linear SAM Models for Inequality Changes Analysis an Application to the Extremadurian Economy written by Francisco Javier de Miguel and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Social accounting matrices are adequate databases for the economic modelling. These matrices emphasize the role of households in the economy, and so, they usually disaggregate the household sector into several groups. This disaggregation allows social accounting matrices to be used for diverse income distribution analysis. The objective of this work is to use the linear SAM models to study how inequality is modified by several exogenous injections of income. The set of multipliers and indicators presented is applied to the economy of Extremadura - a region situated in the southwest of Spain-. In particular, together with the accounting multipliers, two redistributed income matrices are presented to show how changes in final demand and in income transfers cause opposite effects in inequality. For contrasting these results, we also use Gini and Theil indices. Finally, a major reduction in both would result from an appropriate re-allocation of transfers
