Book excerpt: From the Preface:"Over the years, Paulus Gerdes has established himself as the pre-eminent expert on patterns in African weaving and basketry, and the broader implications of these patterns. ... This new book is a broad gallery of plaited African designs. These range over much of the continent while concentrating on those parts of Africa that are closest to his Mozambique center, including Kongo, Mbole and Mangbetu from Congo, Cokwe and Lunda from Angola, Digo from Kenya, Soga from Uganda, Zulu from South Africa, and Makhuwa in Mozambique itself, but including such distant peoples as Bamileke in Cameroon. In Gerdes' gallery we are shown the love of patterns and symmetries that are the result of centuries of exultant exploration. Enjoy!"Donald W. Book African Doctorates in Mathematics

Download or read book African Doctorates in Mathematics written by and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a catalogue of over 2000 doctoral theses by Africans in all fields of mathematics, including applied mathematics, mathematics education and history of mathematics. The introduction contains information about distribution by country, institutions, period, and by gender, about mathematical density, and mobility of mathematicians. Several appendices are included (female doctorate holders, doctorates in mathematics education, doctorates awarded by African universities to non-Africans, doctoral theses by non-Africans about mathematics in Africa, activities of African mathematicians at the service of their communities). Paulus Gerdes compiled the information in his capacity of Chairman of the African Mathematical Union Commission for the History of Mathematics in Africa (AMUCHMA). The book contains a preface by Mohamed Hassan, President of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and Executive Director of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS). (383 pp.)

Book Sona Geometry from Angola

Download or read book Sona Geometry from Angola written by Paulus Gerdes and published by Polimetrica s.a.s.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume provides readers with a glimpse into Paulus Gerdes's seminal work on the mathematics of an African tradition - 'sona' geometry, a drawing and narrative tradition from Angola with embedded mathematical ideas. The work represented in this book contributes significantly to efforts by other African mathematicians and mathematics educators to recuperate and valorize mathematical ideas and reasoning that reside in African material culture and cultural practices [...]. Moreover, Gerdes is a prolific contributor of work that reinforces a growing literature available in English of a dynamic research program in ethnomathematics. Uncoveirng the mathematical ideas embedded in a Cokwe cultural practice and providing access to the richness of these ideas are part of the concerns of ethnomathematics. As an ethnomathematician, Gerdes is not a neutral researcher but rather a public intellectual committed to finding ways not only to understand the mathematics of the Cokwe 'sona' tradition but also to raise important questions such as [...] when he observes that the profoundness of the mathematical ideas expressed in the 'sona' 'had started to build up.' With this, his reader is then prompted to ask questions: What happened to the building up of the 'sona' tradition and its mathematical ideas? Why was this development arrested? Answering these questions along with enjoying the beautiful presentation of the mathematics of the 'sona' tradition are the gifts that readers will receive from this wonderful volume"--Arthur B. Powell, p. [4] of cover.

Book Adventures in the World of Matrices

Download or read book Adventures in the World of Matrices written by Paulus Gerdes and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to give the reader a feeling for the beauty and the surprises of mathematical research by building up step by step a theory of cycle matrices. The notions of matrix and cycle are presented for those readers who do not yet know the concepts. Then, starting and experimenting with cycle matrices of low dimensions and engaging the readers in various activities, beautiful results are obtained with attractive geometrical interpretation. Gradually the results are extended to cycle matrices of higher dimensions and then generalised. A note is included for those readers who would like to use a computer in exploring cycle matrices. Two appendices give the possibility to further use the computer by exploring inverses matrices and determinants.

Book Drawings from Angola

Download or read book Drawings from Angola written by Paulus Gerdes and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For children from age 8 to 14. "Drawings from Angola" present an introduction to an African story telling tradition. The tales are illustrated with marvelous drawings made in the sand. The book conveys the stories of the stork and the leopard, the hunter and the dog, the rooster and the fox, and others. It explains how to execute the drawings. The reader is invited to draw tortoises, antelopes, lions, and other animals. The activities proposed throughout the book invite the reader to experiment and to explore the 'rhythm' and symmetry of the illustrations. Surprising results will be playfully obtained, such as in arithmetic, a way to calculate quickly the sum of a sequence of odd numbers. Children will live the beautiful mathematics of the Angolan sanddrawings. Answers to the activities are provided. The book can be used both in classrooms and at home.

Book African Fractals

Download or read book African Fractals written by Ron Eglash and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractals are characterized by the repetition of similar patterns at ever-diminishing scales. Fractal geometry has emerged as one of the most exciting frontiers on the border between mathematics and information technology and can be seen in many of the swirling patterns produced by computer graphics. It has become a new tool for modeling in biology, geology, and other natural sciences. Anthropologists have observed that the patterns produced in different cultures can be characterized by specific design themes. In Europe and America, we often see cities laid out in a grid pattern of straight streets and right-angle corners. In contrast, traditional African settlements tend to use fractal structures-circles of circles of circular dwellings, rectangular walls enclosing ever-smaller rectangles, and streets in which broad avenues branch down to tiny footpaths with striking geometric repetition. These indigenous fractals are not limited to architecture; their recursive patterns echo throughout many disparate African designs and knowledge systems. Drawing on interviews with African designers, artists, and scientists, Ron Eglash investigates fractals in African architecture, traditional hairstyling, textiles, sculpture, painting, carving, metalwork, religion, games, practical craft, quantitative techniques, and symbolic systems. He also examines the political and social implications of the existence of African fractal geometry. His book makes a unique contribution to the study of mathematics, African culture, anthropology, and computer simulations.

Book Otthava

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paulus Gerdes
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 0557382904
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Otthava written by Paulus Gerdes and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book "Otthava: Making Baskets and Doing Geometry in the Makhuwa Culture in the Northeast of Mozambique" I reflect on practices in the Makhuwa culture, which provide evidence of the geometric considerations operating in basket weaving, and are suitable and appropriate for mathematical and educational exploration. A proper scientific understanding of this knowledge, and the educational value of these manifestations may lead to a better appreciation of the Makhuwa culture. The practices I present in this book belong to the cultural sphere of 'otthava' - weaving, plaiting, interweaving, interlacing, braiding - that is, to basket- and mat- weaving. The topics which are analysed are the making of funnels, hats, fish traps, containers, trays, dance rattles, purses, decorated braids, baskets and handbags, knots and circular mats (292 pp.) Colour versions of the photographs in the book are published in a separate supplement.
