Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, absorbing journey in time crafted by a USA-Today bestselling novelist and a New Testament scholar. Rachel did everything right. But no matter where she was, she had the feeling she was supposed to be someplace else… When an agnostic suburban soccer mom lies down with a migraine, the last thing she expects is to wake up in a dusty, smelly courtyard in first-century Galilee. Befuddled, shocked, and -- as a woman without family traveling alone -- in fear for her very life, Rachel is grateful to be taken in by two wealthy women on a mission: the financial support of a charismatic rabbi from Nazareth. Jesus is a real up-and-comer, the women insist, with a knack for motivational speaking. You’ll love him! But Rachel has never been “a believer.” And even if she were, the swarthy, robust, and greasy-haired man to which she is introduced hardly strikes her as deity material. Then again… sometimes, she isn’t so sure. Based on both scholarly depictions of Jesus of Nazareth and research into daily life in the first century, we see through Rachel’s account a fresh, earthy, and wholly pragmatic portrait of the historical Jesus. We see the rabbi not as the gospel writers chose to present him, but as he might have appeared to the little-known women who bankrolled his travels and to the disciples’ wives who seasoned his stew. As Rachel experiences the resiliency and raw courage of these women, unsung and unrecorded by history, she is forced to wonder whether it is her own frenetic, perfectionist life that is the fairy tale. Rachel Stackhouse is a former veterinarian, childbirth educator, and mother of three who under the pen name Edie Claire is a USA-Today bestselling author of mystery and romantic women’s fiction. In her own frenetic life, she frequently has to remind herself to slow down, take stock, and simplify in order to remember what matters most. For a complete list of her books and plays, please visit www.edieclaire.com. Rev. Peter C. de Vries, Ph. D. has served for a third of a century as a pastor and teacher, daring Jesus-followers to discover the challenges and joys of having their lives turned upside down. He is married to his best friend and has three children, four grandchildren, and a goofy little dog. You can find his video devotions on the Old Union Presbyterian Church YouTube channel, or contact him by email at [email protected].

This unique story, written before the age of ebooks, collected dust in a drawer for many years while mainstream publishers considered it "too Christian" and Christian publishers rejected the concept of time travel as "hocus pocus." Now, thanks to a more open literary market and the addition of excellent commentary by a New Testament scholar, the reader is invited to spy on one woman's vision of the events of first-century Galilee, and to wonder what might have been ... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent books about Jesus and early Christianity can be divided into two kinds: those that examine the life and work of the historical Jesus prior to his death and those that reconstruct events between Jesus' death and the writings of the first Gospels. Sawicki's provocative book challenges the results of both kinds of research by using both archaeology and anthropology to situate Jesus clearly in his Galilean cultural context. Sawicki contests recent portraits of Jesus as a Mediterranean peasant, a Cynic sage, or the convener of a fellowship of equals. In addition, she calls into question readings of ancient Galilee that emphasize it as a society marked simply by economic stratification or by an "honor-shame" sociology. Rather, she discovers the Galilean Jesus' indigenous cultural idiom in its material structures for the negotiation of kinship, the management of labor, the distribution of commodities, and the construction of gender. Sawicki's book is the first to balance classical urban archaeology against the more recent archaeology of villages and of local and regional commerce. It frames current issues in Jesus research in terms that can guide both ongoing village excavations in Israel and responsible exegesis of the Gospels in church and academy. Marianne Sawicki is the author of Seeing the Lord: Resurrection and Early Christian Practices. For: Seminarians; graduate students; biblical archaeologists

Book excerpt: Sixth in the USA-Today bestselling Leigh Koslow Mystery Series! After a real-time, 10-year hiatus, Leigh and all her friends and family are back... and better than ever! It's been ten long years since Leigh Koslow last stumbled onto a body. She thought she had a reprieve. She was wrong. Hapless advertising copywriter Leigh Koslow, who was last seen joyfully announcing to her politician husband that she was pregnant, is now a middle-aged mom who is more than happy to leave the macabre pandemonium of her thirties behind. Unfortunately, Leigh's killer karma hasn't really deserted her... it's only been biding its time. When an innocent walk in the woods with her dog turns up yet another corpse, Leigh begins to get worried. It's bad enough that the victim is a client of her agency. It's even worse that he is the same unscrupulous real estate developer who's been conniving to bulldoze her Aunt Bess's homestead. And it would be a whole lot better for everyone in Leigh's family if her cousin Cara's husband hadn't brawled with the man in front of a churchful of witnesses an hour before the murder. But fate is what it is, and as Leigh's beleaguered friend, Detective Maura Polanski, sets out once again to save the Koslow clan from self-destruction, the women face their toughest battle yet. Because not only has Leigh failed to grow out of her inborn talent for trouble, she's bestowed it on the next generation... Praise for the Leigh Koslow Mystery Series: NEVER BURIED "A funny, fast-paced, clever, and unusual mystery that will have readers clamoring for more. Edie Claire writes with style and dash. Sheer delight."—Carolyn Hart NEVER SORRY "Edie Claire is a bright new addition to the mystery world. Along with appealing characters and a blessedly lucid writing style, she delivers a solid plot that keeps the pages turning."—Margaret Maron NEVER TEASE A SIAMESE "The fifth installment in this excellent series, and perhaps Ms. Claire's best yet. The characters and relationships are superior, written with heartfelt compassion and wry wit."—Romantic Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two types of conflict in congregations: conflict that kills and conflict that cultivates growth. So argues David E. Woolverton in Mission Rift: Leading through Church Conflict. Conflict that kills--that damages or destroys teams, ministries, missions, vibrancy--occurs when we as the people of God forget who we are, why we're here, and where we're going in carrying out the divine mission. Conflict that cultivates growth often begins with the same scenarios, but leaders see conflict as a context for learning how to live together as a people called to transform their neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces. In Mission Rift, Woolverton reorients our view of congregational conflict. In part 1, he examines conflict from a theological and ecclesiological framework, exploring why it is essential to discipleship and mission. In part 2, he presents six principles of missional leadership, challenging pastors and other leaders to define themselves within the frameworks of spiritual formation and family systems, and then to create environments that facilitate growth in faith communities. Rather than resolve conflict too quickly, Woolverton explains, lest we inadvertently sabotage the potential it has to draw a congregation toward spiritual growth, wise leaders recognize that a lack of conflict may be a symptom of missional decline, rather than congregational unity. When the church pursues its divine mission first, conflict may become essential for defining its mission priorities. Successfully leading through conflict toward a transformative end will empower a congregation's witness within its community and beyond.

Book excerpt: Third in the FATED LOVES collection from USA-Today bestselling author Edie Claire. You can't run away from your past. But in some cases, it's worth a try. Sarah Landers’ parents were killed in a plane crash when she was seventeen; her only sister committed suicide days after. Now, nearly a decade later, Sarah assures everyone she is perfectly fine -- never mind her quiet aloofness, her intensity at work, her seeming neglect of any social life. Only Sarah knows the whole story. Only she is aware of the dark memories that plague her with guilt -- of the fear of discovery that paralyzes her soul. But when an enigmatic illness forces the normally self-sufficient Sarah to depend on someone -- namely the charming do-gooder of a neighbor, Adam, whom she has been trying desperately to avoid -- her carefully built cocoon begins to crumble. Her family’s home in Alabama, left vacant since the tragedy, still holds the grim evidence of her nightmares -- and is slated for imminent demolition. With the horror of her past swiftly catching up to her, Sarah’s malady begins to look less like a catastrophe -- and more like her only way out. But the (rather irreverent) reverend Adam Carmassi refuses to let Sarah go -- not when she is the first woman who has ever truly touched his heart, and not when he is so certain he can help her. With the end of Sarah's life looming in more ways than one, Adam wages a desperate campaign to convince her that no matter what tortured secrets she insists on hiding, her life is worth living -- and their chance of a future together, however slim, is a dream worth fighting for. Downloaded over two million times worldwide. Years and distance kept the memories at bay. But back at home, the past is ready and waiting to haunt her... Eighteen years have passed since Joy's childhood best friend, Jenny, met her death in a tragic car accident just a few days after their senior prom. A broken Joy left their small Kentucky hometown shortly after -- determined never to come back. But when her father's illness forces her to return, she realizes that neither time nor distance has truly healed her troubled soul. Plagued with nightmares of the accident and crippled by a vague fear whose source she can't identify, Joy realizes that in order to move on she must face the truth behind several disturbing gaps in her memory of that fateful spring. But the only person who can help her is a man she despises: Jenny's erstwhile boyfriend Jeff, now a respected doctor, whose carelessness as a teenager was the cause of Jenny's horrendous death -- and Joy's own emotional destruction. Once upon a hot, lazy summer at Indian Lake, Pennsylvania, two giggling twelve-year-old girls swore to stay best friends forever. But some promises are hard to keep. When hospital social worker Teagan Hansen is called to the bedside of a Jane Doe who has been beaten and left for dead with no ID and no memory, she expects to be dealing with a victim of domestic violence. The last thing she expects is to look into the eyes of the childhood friend who disappeared abruptly from her life fourteen years before. Concussed, broken, and hypothermic, Jamie can’t remember her own name, much less what personal circumstances brought her to such tragedy. But as the pieces of her memory begin to fit together, she does remember how much her friendship with Teagan meant to her through the long years of foster care, hard work, and heartbreak that followed that one magical summer. As the indomitable Teagan vows to help Jamie get back on her feet again, the women’s bond strengthens anew. But with Jamie’s life under threat from a man she can’t remember -- a man who is determined to find her again before she does -- Teagan’s loyalties to her friend, her profession, and her new marriage are tested to their limits. And when the women realize that their pasts have been intertwined far more deeply than either of them knew, the fate that separated them once before threatens to tear apart them again. Book excerpt: Third in the HAWAIIAN SHADOWS series by USA-Today bestselling author Edie Claire! Sometimes being together feels electrifying. Sometimes it actually is. Seventeen-year-old Kali has spent an idyllic few months on Oahu, becoming ever closer to Zane as they enjoy the tropical sun on the beaches of the world-famous North Shore. But as their summer vacations draw to a close, Kali can’t help but feel a twinge of concern. Nothing between the two teenagers has ever been simple, but the deeper in love she falls, the more intense her connection with the shadows -- and other things she’d rather not connect with -- seems to become. And as excited as she is about the prospect of Zane’s returning her love, their bizarre relationship seems to be having “effects” on him as well -- effects that are more than a little disturbing. A frustrated Kali feels as if she and Zane might be in perfect Lokahi, or harmony, if only they could be “normal.” But is that even an option? When an innocent mix-up at the Honolulu airport results in their crossing paths with fate at its darkest, Kali and Zane must decide whether to play it safe… or embrace the power of the unknown. Reviews of Wraith from the bloggers: "WOW! Is all I can say... I loved every minute of it. It has to be one of the best YA paranormal reads I have read to date. This book is filled with heart and soul... I don’t think I have actually cried over a book since I was in the 7th grade and read Where the Red Fern Grows... Really Edie... I’m begging, write more Zane and Kali!"-- Melissa Hardy, Smardy Pants Book Blog "This book is so incredibly awesome!! I loved absolutely every minute that I spent reading this!! It was a book that kept me up long into the early hours of the morning...I simply couldn't put it down!!...I loved Kali and Zane. Kali's spunk and Zane's enthusiasm, sense of humour and energy were infectious!!...Without a doubt a massive 5/5."-- Young Adult Book Addict "Despite my inclination to listen to stories intended for a more mature audience, I found myself lost and totally engrossed in Kali and Zane’s story. I listened to this audiobook straight through enjoying every minute of it. Wraith is the impressive first book in the YA series Hawaiian Shadows... The writing style is very vivid -- the author not only puts you there emotionally, but also physically in a way that makes you feel the warm ocean breeze of a Hawaiian spring... A fantastic YA listen." -- Loupe Duffy, Hot Listens [From the audio version, narrated by the award-winning Tavia Gilbert]

She can feel what’s in the hearts of both the living and the dead… But can she keep her own from breaking? Seventeen-year-old Kali is hopelessly, madly in love with a guy who can’t remember ever meeting her. But Kali has never been one to give up easily -- or to break her word -- and she promised Zane that she would stop hiding her “gifts” from the people closest to her. When her heartfelt confession of seeing shadows of the past sends her friend Tara into a stony silence and her fighter-pilot dad into a tailspin, Kali wonders if she’s done the right thing. Thank goodness her friend Kylee seems to understand, because being in love is having more of an effect on Kali than just making her miserable. It’s making her “abilities” grow stronger than ever. When at last she and Zane meet again on the beaches of Oahu’s North Shore, Kali is determined that, this time, everything will turn out right. But when a foreboding specter appears in the midst of Kali’s own family -- a presence that only Zane can see -- the two find themselves in a situation that is anything but normal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelfth in the USA-Today bestselling Leigh Koslow mystery series! How many dandelions does it take to spell disaster? Claudia Hemmings never cared for her next-door neighbor. Theodore Milton, MD neglected his lawn, frightened trick-or-treaters, and flagrantly ignored the Homeowner Association’s mailbox specifications. But when she began to suspect that he was engaged in criminal activity, she decided it was time to act. Then she disappeared. Now, six months later, her house stands empty and Dr. Milton’s is up for sale. And while Leigh’s house-hunting Aunt Bess may think that the doctor’s humble 1940s ranch has potential for greatness, all Leigh can think about is the creepy stuff he left behind. Something about buying a house from a man who’s in a coma gives Leigh the heebie jeebies. But when mysterious third parties start bidding the price up, strangers prowl the empty house at night, and Aunt Bess insists she’s moving in anyway, Leigh gets officially worried. What was the eccentric doctor really up to? And what is it that everyone keeps searching for? Leigh isn’t sure she wants to know. But somebody has to look out for her intrepid Aunt Bess. Because in this neighborhood, every dog walk may be your last.
