Book excerpt: Soccer in Oneonta was practically nonexistent until the 1950s. Rural schools in the region played the game because it was inexpensive and, in many cases, because the schools could not field six- or eleven-man football teams. The first organized soccer team began in 1955 at what was then called Oneonta State Teachers College, today's State University of New York College at Oneonta, and a year later, a team formed at Hartwick College. Both teams improved their skills in the 1960s and 1970s, and eventually the town was home to national champions from both schools. Interest spread to Oneonta High School, and youth soccer leagues became tremendously popular. Soccer in Oneonta depicts the teams, the players, the sport, and how this city in the northern Catskills got its nickname, "Soccertown, USA."

The first inductees were some of the greatest names of the dugout, including Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. Less than ten years later, in 1945, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted its first members. The Soccer Hall of Fame was established in 1950, followed by the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959, and the Football Hall of Fame in 1963. In all, more than 1,400 inductees—players, teams, and behind the scenes personnel—have been enshrined in these five halls of fame. The Sports Hall of Fame Encyclopedia is a comprehensive listing of each inductee elected into one or more of these major sports halls of fame. From Hank Aaron to Fred Zollner, this book contains biographical information, sport and position(s) played, and career statistics (when applicable) of each of the more than 1,400 honorees. The book also includes specific appendixes for each shrine, in which inductees are listed alphabetically and by year of induction. Also included are appendixes briefly describing the history of each hall of fame.

Book 90 MINUTES WITH THE KING

Download or read book 90 MINUTES WITH THE KING written by "Soccer Tom" Mulroy and published by Book Baby. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back cover description Experience the remarkable journey of a boy from New York who begins life behind the eight ball. Growing up on the edge of poverty, he battles dyslexia and endures the pain dealt by an alcoholic father. From his single mother he learns grit, empathy, and selflessness. At age 12, when he is still torn between right and wrong, he is introduced to soccer. The Beautiful Game saves his life. It becomes his life. Never mind that outside his neighborhood, soccer is seen as an ethnic cult, a sport played by “candy asses” and people who do not speak English. Nothing dents the boy’s will. He follows his idol, Pelé, like a North Star. He dreams of becoming a pro. His dream becomes an obsession, his exit ramp off a road that would have left him “dead or in jail.” In his early teens, this lad plays for coaches who shape him as a player and a man. He struggles in school, but he has found his purpose. He plays or practices fifty hours a week. Some days he hitchhikes to games, other days he spends entire afternoons lashing balls off the brick wall of Cinema 45. No one will outwork him; nothing will distract him. Seven years after he first touches a ball, Tom Mulroy becomes a professional soccer player. And then, against billion-to-one odds, Soccer Tom experiences the dream of every soccer player and fan around the world.
