Book So You Want a Meade LX Telescope

Download or read book So You Want a Meade LX Telescope written by Lawrence Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers and Astronomy Perhaps every generation of astronomers believes that their telescopes are the best that have ever been. They are surely all correct! The great leap of our time is that computer-designed and machined parts have led to more accurately made com- nents that give the astronomer ever better views. The manual skills of the craftsman mirror grinder have been transformed into the new-age skills of the programmer and the machine maker. (The new products did not end the work of craftsman te- scope makers, though. Many highly skilled amateur/professional opticians cont- ued to produce good-quality mirrors that are still seen today. ) Amateur-priced telescopes are now capable of highly accurate tracking and computer control that were once only the province of professionals. This has greatly increased the p- sibilities of serious astronomy projects for which tailor-made software has been developed. Add a CCD camera to these improved telescopes (see Chap. 3), and you bring a whole new dimension to your astronomy (see Fig. 1. 1). Look Before You Leap! But first, a word of caution. Unless you are already familiar with astronomy and basic telescopes, it is not wise to start spending large amounts of money on a we- featured telescope. Such an instrument might otherwise be subsequently abandoned due to a perceived overcomplexity coupled with a waning interest.

Book Revamping Hanover College Observatory

Download or read book Revamping Hanover College Observatory written by Jacob Hobbs and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report details the revitalization of the Meade LX200 16-inch telescope located at the Hanover College Observatory, which had been non-operational due to multiple mechanical and technological issues. Initiated as a senior engineering project, the team was tasked with diagnosing and resolving issues including a runaway motor, oil leaks, and a stuck declination (DEC) motor lock, which had rendered the telescope inoperative for nearly a decade. The project was conducted with a strict budget of2,500, with most of the funds provided externally from the Physics and Astronomy Department, limiting the direct financial impact on our team's allocated budget. Key to the project's success was the implementation of the Autostar Upgrade Kit, which replaced the outdated and malfunctioning PCB with modern, simplified technology that enhanced the telescope's functionality and reliability. This upgrade, complemented by the integration of a Revolution Imager and WiFi control, not only fixed the existing issues but also modernized the telescope to be comparable with contemporary models such as the MeadeLX200 'GPS' series. The project outcomes included a fully operational telescope that significantly enhances the observational capabilities at Hanover College, providing a valuable tool for education and research. The total expenditure amounted to only1,700, demonstrating a cost-effective approach to solving complex engineering problems. Future enhancements are envisioned to further improve the observatory's facilities, aiming to make Hanover College a prominent center for astronomy in the region.

Book The Telescope

  • Author : Louis Bell

  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book The Telescope written by Louis Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Telescope This book is written for the many observers, who use telescopes for study or pleasure and desire more information about their construction and properties. Not being a handbook in two or more thick quartos, it attempts neither exhaustive technicalities nor popular descriptions of great observatories and their work. It deals primarily with principles and their application to such instruments as are likely to come into the possession, or within reach, of students and others for whom the Heavens have a compelling call. Much has been written of telescopes, first and last, but it is for the most part scattered through papers in three or four languages, and quite inaccessible to the ordinary reader. For his benefit the references are, so far as is practicable, to English sources, and dimensions are given, regretfully, in English units. Certain branches of the subject are not here discussed for lack of space or because there is recent literature at hand to which reference can be made. Such topics are telescopes notable chiefly for their dimensions, and photographic apparatus on which special treatises are available. Celestial photography is a branch of astronomy which stands on its own feet, and although many telescopes are successfully used for photography through the help of color screens, the photographic telescope proper and its use belongs to a field somewhat apart, requiring a technique quite its own. It is many years, however, since any book has dealt with the telescope itself, apart from the often repeated accounts of the marvels it discloses. The present volume contains neither pictures of nebulae nor speculations as to the habitibility of the planets; it merely attempts to bring the facts regarding the astronomer's chief instrument of research somewhere within grasp and up to the present time.
