Book Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person

Download or read book Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person written by The School of Life and published by School of Life Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays extended from The New York Times' most-read article of 2016. Anyone we might marry could, of course, be a little bit wrong for us. We don’t expect bliss every day. The fault isn’t entirely our own; it has to do with the devilish truth that anyone we’re liable to meet is going to be rather wrong, in some fascinating way or another, because this is simply what all humans happen to be – including, sadly, ourselves. This collection of essays proposes that we don’t need perfection to be happy. So long as we enter our relationships in the right spirit, we have every chance of coping well enough with, and even delighting in, the inevitable and distinctive wrongness that lies in ourselves and our beloveds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melinda A. Roberts and David T. Wasserman 1 Purpose of this Collection What are our obligations with respect to persons who have not yet, and may not ever, come into existence? Few of us believe that we can wrong those whom we leave out of existence altogether—that is, merely possible persons. We may think as well that the directive to be “fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth” 1 does not hold up to close scrutiny. How can it be wrong to decline to bring ever more people into existence? At the same time, we think we are clearly ob- gated to treat future persons—persons who don’t yet but will exist—in accordance with certain stringent standards. Bringing a person into an existence that is truly awful—not worth having—can be wrong, and so can bringing a person into an existence that is worth having when we had the alternative of bringing that same person into an existence that is substantially better. We may think as well that our obligations with respect to future persons are triggered well before the point at which those persons commence their existence. We think it would be wrong, for example, to choose today to turn the Earth of the future into a miserable place even if the victims of that choice do not yet exist.

With dangerous enemies closing in all around them — and dangerous attraction flaring to life between them — Shelby starts to realize she’s dreading the day Conor catches her no-good husband. Not because she wants to save her marriage… but because she can’t bear to say goodbye to the man who has quickly become her fiercest protector… SO WRONG IT’S RIGHT is a comedic contemporary romance about a woman trying to escape a broken marriage… and the bossy perpetual bachelor who steps in to keep her safe. It is the fifth installment of the internationally bestselling BOSTON LOVE STORY series and can be read as a complete standalone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of the Paris Uprising of 1832, ‘The She-Wolves of Machecoul’ is dripping with political intrigue, sinister plots, and knuckle-cracking villains. However, at its heart, the story is a romantic one, focusing on the fortunes of the eponymous she-wolves, Mary and Bertha. While the plot to establish a new monarch unfolds, Mary and Bertha are both smitten with Baron Michel Logerie. But is the Baron all that he seems, or does he have ulterior motives? Filled with thrills, secrets, and historical detail, ́The She-Wolves of Machecoul ́ is a superb adventure story, which will surely delight fans of Dumas' other works. Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870) was one of the most popular French authors and playwrights of the 19th Century. After the death of his father, Dumas travelled to Paris where he eventually decided to work in the theatre. He first came to public attention at the age of 27 with his first play, ‘King Henry III and his Courts.’ After a succession of successful stage plays, Dumas turned his hand to writing novels. Many of these were serialised in newspapers, such as ‘La Comtesse de Salisbury; Édouard III,’ and ‘Le Capitaine Paul.’ Many of Dumas’ later works have been hailed as timeless classics and adapted for television and the silver screen, such as ‘The Three Musketeers’, starring ‘Lord of the Rings’ ́ Orlando Bloom, and ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, starring ‘Superman’ star, Henry Cavill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories from The Age of Distraction Series: Contemporary Novellas "We're so connected, we're disconnected.” The art of storytelling--and its survival--is a fundamental theme in Patricia Mahon’s new series of edgy novellas, cleverly weaving excerpts from timeless masters of fiction and thought within each volume. The juxtaposition of classic authors against contemporary muses cements the concept that storytelling is an art crucial to the preservation of the human epic: it is our narrative. In Volume One, The Island, a speech writer (Morgan) and a school teacher (Percy) lament the loss of human engagement and creativity due to the disconnect of the digital age. Joined by a Silicon Valley turncoat and techno-savant, the trio set out to create a global writing platform, an app that allows worldwide, real-time participation in a collective story. The concept goes viral but the irony lies in a virtual reality so strong, it takes the three on a journey of discovery, pitting fantasy against reality—this volume’s destination is the first of many more to come. Coming Oct 2016: Volume Two, The Vineyard, lands Morgan and Percy in a remote tasting room in California wine country, in search of Bartholomew, a legendary, illusive “grape whisperer” known for coaxing perfect ripeness and imparting the “whispered vintage” of the vineyard. After a rainstorm wreaks havoc, our protagonists are stranded without electricity among strangers forced to pass the time drinking wine and recounting tales, hoping their clues will uncover the myth or the man. Coming Spring 2017: Volume Three, The Abbey, takes flight to a small Irish town, nicknamed The Village of the Monks, where Morgan’s family lineage is rooted. Following the clues of her late grandmother, an iconic storyteller, the pair head to a haunted old church and meet vibrant Irish characters along the way. It isn’t long before spirits of the past begin to reveal the Abbey’s tumultuous history of tragedy and suppression, rewarding Morgan and Percy with much more than a family ghost story.

Book The Duty to Obey the Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Atkins Edmundson
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780847692552

Download or read book The Duty to Obey the Law written by William Atkins Edmundson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1999 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question, 'Why should I obey the law?' introduces a contemporary puzzle that is as old as philosophy itself. The puzzle is especially troublesome if we think of cases in which breaking the law is not otherwise wrongful, and in which the chances of getting caught are negligible. Philosophers from Socrates to H.L.A. Hart have struggled to give reasoned support to the idea that we do have a general moral duty to obey the law but, more recently, the greater number of learned voices has expressed doubt that there is any such duty, at least as traditionally conceived. The thought that there is no such duty poses a challenge to our ordinary understanding of political authority and its legitimacy. In what sense can political officials have a right to rule us if there is no duty to obey the laws they lay down? Some thinkers, concluding that a general duty to obey the law cannot be defended, have gone so far as to embrace philosophical anarchism, the view that the state is necessarily illegitimate. Others argue that the duty to obey the law can be grounded on the idea of consent, or on fairness, or on other ideas, such as community.
