Book Improved Techniques for Construction of Snow Roads and Airstrips

Download or read book Improved Techniques for Construction of Snow Roads and Airstrips written by Sung M. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rammsonde profile measurements and surface strength (Clegg impact) tests were conducted at selected sites in Antarctica on the snow roadways between McMurdo Station and Williams Field as well as on the aircraft skiway. Rammsonde measurements were also made at several points on the South Pole Station and South Pole Stations. The purpose of the snow pit work was to investigate possible correlation between Rammsonde hardness data of the snowpack and the snow characterization data consisting of profiles of temperature, density, stratification, grain size, and metamorphic state. California bearing ratio (CBR) testing, to supplement previous work, was done in a laboratory coldroom at Michigan Technological University using snow that had been harvested near Houghton, Michigan, during the winter of 1985-86. A report on this will be published separately. The samples were prepared in a compaction machine and tested after sintering times of 7, 14 and 21 days at -10 C.A field test was conducted in Houghton with binder/additive-snow mixes in situ. Keywords: Aircraft skiways, Antarctica, Snow roads, Snow runways, Field tests. (SDW).

Book ICE AND SNOW TERRAIN FEATURES McMURDO STATION ANTARCTICA

Download or read book ICE AND SNOW TERRAIN FEATURES McMURDO STATION ANTARCTICA written by R. A. Paige and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movement of the McMurdo Lobe of the Ross Ice Shelf causes pressure ridges, crevasses, and periodic calving that requires careful selection of runway sites and road routes to assure safe and long-term operations. Movement of the ice shelf between Pram Point and Williams Field varies from 230 to 281 feet per year. The probable critical thickness beyond which the ice shelf does not calve varies between 90 to 100 feet west of Williams Field to 50 or 60 feet near Pram Point. Hidden subsurface melt pools occur in the glacier ice at Outer Williams Field and, during summer, seriously hamper trafficability of the alternate ice runway at this location. Dangerous sea ice conditions are caused by late-season differential thinning and deterioration, seal breathing holes, hidden slush zones in deep snow, pressure ridges and flooded, downwarped areas of ice in the embayment south of McMurdo Station. Sea-ice-to-land and sea-ice-to-ice shelf ramps require almost constant repair to maintain the necessary over-ice road network. (Author).

Book Improved Transition Ramps for McMurdo Station Antarctica

Download or read book Improved Transition Ramps for McMurdo Station Antarctica written by F. W. Brier and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheeled vehicle travel between McMurdo Station and Williams Field is via a processed snow road on the Ross Ice Shelf or on an annual sea ice road cross McMurdo Sound. The critical areas of construction and maintenance on the McMurdo road system are at points of transition from one road material to another material. Three transition conditions exist in the road system: annual sea ice to snow, snow to land, and annual sea ice to land. Each of the three transition zones has different construction and maintenance problems. These problems were reviewed and field tests were conducted on various types of surfacing materials at Port Hueneme, California, and McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The field tests showed AM2 aluminum planking was more durable than Mo-mat, but Mo-mat has sufficient strength to support vehicular traffic when it is properly anchored. The field tests also indicated that when placed on sea ice AM2 aluminum planking and Mo-mat must be insulated to prevent surface melting of the ice. (Author).

Book Snow and Ice Properties as Related to Roads and Runways in Antarctica

Download or read book Snow and Ice Properties as Related to Roads and Runways in Antarctica written by Gunars Abele and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic tests were performed to determine the Young's modulus of sea ice, derived from longitudinal wave velocities measured with a soniscope. Static tests consisted of standard ring tensile strength and simple beam or flexural strength tests. The strength data were plotted on a base of the brine volume for each test. The test results indicate that the annual sea ice at McMurdo Sound is capable of supporting cargo type aircraft. Snow runways capable of supporting a C-130 aircraft on wheels and providing marginal support to a C-121 can be constructed either with the Peter plow or with the pulvimixer. However, the runway would be reliable only during comparatively low temperatures (

Book Snow Drift on Natural Depressed and Elevated Surfaces Near McMurdo Antarctica

Download or read book Snow Drift on Natural Depressed and Elevated Surfaces Near McMurdo Antarctica written by N. S. Stehle and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drifting snow in polar areas results in problems of logistics and maintenance. To obtain knowledge of snow drift and accumulation on the Ross Ice Shelf near McMurdo Station, Antarctica, measurements of drift were made on natural, depressed, and elevated surfaces, and in camp and storage areas on these surfaces. From these measurements, it was concluded that depressed surfaces quickly become filled with snow to the natural-surface level, and should be avoided in locations of annual accumulation. Elevated surfaces accumulate minimal drift when used for roads, runways, or storage areas, and should be investigated for use as future camp locations. (Author).

Book Handbook on Geopolitics and Security in the Arctic

Download or read book Handbook on Geopolitics and Security in the Arctic written by Joachim Weber and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of climate change and tectonic political shifts in world politics, this handbook provides an overview of the most crucial geopolitical and security related issues in the Arctic. It discusses established shareholder's policies in the Arctic – those of Russia, Canada, the USA, Denmark, and Norway – as well as the politics and interests of other significant or future stakeholders, including China and India. Furthermore, it explains the economic situation and the legal framework that governs the Arctic, and the claims that Arctic states have made in order to expand their territories and exclusive economic zones. While illustrating the collaborative approach, represented by institutions such as the Arctic council, which has often been described as an exceptional institution in this region, the contributing authors examine potential resource and power conflicts between Arctic nations, due to competing interests. The authors also address topics such as changing alliances between Arctic nations, new sea lines of communication, technological shifts, and eventually the return to power politics in the area. Written by experts on international security studies and the Arctic, as well as practitioners from government institutions and international organizations, the book provides an invaluable source of information for anyone interested in geopolitical shifts and security issues in the High North.
