Book excerpt: Snow Hill, on the banks of the Pocomoke River, has been home to farmers, bankers, merchants, artisans, sea captains, and politicians for more than 300 years. Founded by English settlers from a part of London named Snow Hill," the town became a trading post on the Pocomoke and was designated a royal port by William and Mary of England. Trade was the engine that drove commerce in the town, and the Pocomoke River was the highway. Imported goods were brought into Snow Hill to be taxed, and lumber, tobacco, and crafts by local artisans were exported across the Atlantic. Snow Hill's economic success spread rapidly in the 19th century as steamboats carried passengers to Norfolk and Baltimore and the railroad brought opportunities to expand local markets. Hotels, shops, boarding houses, and stately homes sprang up as the economy expanded. Today Snow Hill boasts one of the largest concentrations of historic homes, churches, and commercial buildings still intact in the state of Maryland. Residents are committed to preserving the town's heritage so it will remain "the Treasure of the Eastern Shore."

Book excerpt: Margaret's Harbor, a small, exclusive island off the coast of Massachussets, has been disrupted for weeks by the antics of a group of young celebrities. Kendra Rhode, of the extremely wealthy Rhode family, is the ring leader and part-year resident on the island. Two of her cohorts, Arrow Normand, an aging teen pop idol, and Marcey Mandret, another of the same vintage, have been acting out publicly - drunken, disorderly public behavior eaten up by the press. During one of the most devastating blizzards in decades, Normand staggers up to a local house, covered in blood and incoherently drunk. Her latest boy toy is found shot dead in the front seat of a crashed truck. The only suspect in the crime is Normand herself and she was apparently far too out of it to remember what actually happened that night. Former F.B.I. agent Gregor Demarkian, fleeing from the preparations for his own wedding, is hired to review the case against Normand. What he finds is a case with little evidence, twisted by an out-of-control media and the cult of celebrity surrounding the three young women, and a mare's nest of motives, in what may be the most confusing, twisted case of his entire career.

  • Release : 2021-02
  • ISBN : 1496224493
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Eagle Voice Remembers written by John G. Neihardt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Eagle Voice Remembers] is John Neihardt’s mature and reflective interpretation of the old Sioux way of life. He served as a translator of the Sioux past, whose audience has proved not to be limited by space or time. Through Neihardt’s writings Black Elk, Eagle Elk, and other old men who were of that last generation of Sioux to have participated in the old buffalo-hunting life and the disorienting period of strife with the U.S. Army found a literary voice. What they say chronicles a dramatic transition in the life of the Plains Indians; the record of their thoughts, interpreted by Neihardt, is a legacy preserved for the future. It transcends the specifics of this one tragic case of cultural misunderstanding and conflict and speaks to universal human concerns. It is a story worth contemplating both for itself and for the lessons it teaches all humanity.”—from the introduction by Raymond J. DeMallie In her foreword Coralie Hughes discusses John G. Neihardt’s intention that this book, formerly titled When the Tree Flowered, be understood as a prequel to his classic Black Elk Speaks. In this new edition David C. Posthumus adds clarity through his annotations, introducing Eagle Voice Remembers to a new generation of readers and presenting a fresh understanding for fans of the original.
