Book excerpt: Growing up in the 1950's and 1960's, Skissley is the oldest child in a Nebraska farm family of modest means. Her possessions are few, but she does possess two rare and priceless gifts: talent to write and remarkable insight. Combined with her keen observations of the people, events, and magnificent nature surrounding her, the results are a unique perspective of life in mid 20th century Middle America, which Skissley captures in the pages of her beloved diaries. But being only twelve as well as inherently honest, she regularly spills the beans on the family secrets. Then too, there is that notorious river town of Rulo nearby, with the majority of its population of hangers-on comprised of eccentric and unsavory misfits. Though these characters with their questionable lifestyles live but a stone's throw from Skissley, they are worlds apart from her. Yet few will escape her scrutiny or the veracity of her pen. While it seems that Skissley is merely divulging colorful tidbits of life within her sphere, it soon becomes obvious that she is really revealing the inner workings of her own soul, because she is in fact, a true Child of the Universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the requested sequel to the well-received original volume: ""A Baby Boomers History of Guilderland"" published in 2017. New stories and new photographs. In contrast to the first book, this one focuses more on personal memories than geography and landmarks. The first volume had 34 contributors of stories and graphics. The one has over 60! Places we lived, loved, learned, worked and played, taken for granted, as though nothing would ever change. Those days from the 1950's to 1980's, were times of great change, not only in the culture of America, but also as reflected in the town. Like much of history, it didn't last long. In addition, it has a lengthy chapter about The Guilderland Players at Guilderland Central High School.

Book Sixty Sexy and Successful

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Schwalbe Ph.D.
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

  • ISBN : 0275999297

Download or read book Sixty Sexy and Successful written by Robert Schwalbe Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-05-30 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a psychotherapist who focuses on working with the issues that challenge midlife and older men, Robert Schwalbe feels that the 60s and beyond can be the most rewarding or the most miserable period in a man's life. An aging male baby boomer looking at 60 encounters very specific psychological and physical changes. The impact of these changes can be felt in relationship to others and in how a man sees himself in his world. Does he continue to fit in? In particular, how a man adapts to being in his 60s is an indicator of how he feels about living the rest of his life. Dr. Schwalbe knows from personal experience, as well as from his patients, the challenges produced by anxiety and depression in dealing with aging in a youth-oriented society. He looks at competition in the gym, sports field, financial and business arena, the political world to the social and sexual world and urges men to adapt to the outside forces. The key is in the expectations and how to recognize and plan for them. Candid and straightforward talk with vignettes drawn from Dr. Schwalbe's practice illustrate problems and solutions related to marriage, relationships, career, retirement (don't, he urges), divorce, death of a partner, fitness, nutrition, sexual behavior, dealing with adult children, lifestyle changes, financial planning, ageism, and many other topics. Schwalbe presents a heart-felt and therapeutically tested guide to keeping things in perspective in order to maintain self confidence and self esteem. Most importantly, this book is directed to the aging male baby boomer (and to those who love him, know him, or live with him). It tells him that he is not alone and that the intimate thoughts that he has about his aging body and mind are shared by millions of men who are in their 60s and are dealing with their new age.

Book No Regrets in the Evening of Life

Download or read book No Regrets in the Evening of Life written by Neville Buch and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The type of local and school history before the reader may be unfamiliar. It is a definitive and scholarly history in the style of many grammar school histories in Queensland. Although it is not unknown for Australian public and private schooling, it is unique for Queensland state schools. By saying it is a ‘definitive and scholarly history’, what is meant is not that the history is complete; only that it reaches decisive conclusions in a substantive treatment. In this particular case, the historian is someone who has been trained at the level of a higher degree.

Book Why Baby Boomers Turned from Religion

Download or read book Why Baby Boomers Turned from Religion written by Abby Day and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mocked, vilified, blamed, and significantly misunderstood - the 'Baby Boomers' are members of the generation of post-WWII babies who came of age in the 1960s. Parents of the 1940s and 1950s raised their Boomer children to be respectable church-attendees, and yet in some ways demonstrated an ambivalence that permitted their children to spurn religion and eventually to raise their own children to be the least religious generation ever. The Baby Boomers studied here, living in the UK and Canada, were the last generation to have been routinely baptised and taken regularly to mainstream, Anglican churches. So, what went wrong - or, perhaps, right? This study, based on in-depth interviews and compared to other studies and data, is the first to offer a sociological account of the sudden transition from religious parents to non-religious children and grandchildren, focusing exclusively on this generation of ex-Anglican Boomers. Now in their 60s and 70s, the Boomers featured here make sense of their lives and the world they helped create. They discuss how they continue to dis-believe in God yet have an easy relationship with ghosts, and how they did not, as theologians often claim, fall into an immoral self-centred abyss. They forged different practices and sites (whether in 'this world' or 'elsewhere') of meaning, morality, community, and transcendence. They also reveal here the values, practices, and beliefs they transmitted to the future generations, helping shape the non-religious identities of Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z.

Book What Did The Baby Boomers Ever Do For Us

Download or read book What Did The Baby Boomers Ever Do For Us written by Francis Beckett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2010, this book explores the legacy of the baby boomers: the generation who, born in the aftermath of the Second World War, came of age in the radical sixties where for the first time since the War, there was freedom, money, and safe sex. In this book, Francis Beckett argues that what began as the most radical-sounding generation for half a century turned into a random collection of youthful style gurus, sharp-toothed entrepreneurs and management consultants who believed revolution meant new ways of selling things; and Thatcherites, who thought freedom meant free markets, not free people. At last, it found its most complete expression in New Labour. The author argues that the children of the 1960s betrayed the generations that came before and after, and that the true legacy of the swinging decade is in ashes.

Download or read book The Greater Generation written by Leonard Steinhorn and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's fashionable to mock Boomers as self-involved and materialistic, but what really is their true legacy? To understand how the Boomers have changed America, think back to the 1950s, but without the nostalgia: women were kept at home, minorities were denied their dignity, homosexuality was a crime, and anyone who marched to a different drummer was labeled un-American. Today we live in a far more open, inclusive, tolerant, and equal America. That's because Baby Boomers fought a great cultural war to free America from its prejudices, inequalities, and fears. This book tells the story of their accomplishments.--From publisher description.

Book A Generation of Sociopaths

Download or read book A Generation of Sociopaths written by Bruce Cannon Gibney and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his "remarkable" (Men's Journal) and "controversial" (Fortune) book -- written in a "wry, amusing style" (The Guardian) -- Bruce Cannon Gibney shows how America was hijacked by the Boomers, a generation whose reckless self-indulgence degraded the foundations of American prosperity. In A Generation of Sociopaths, Gibney examines the disastrous policies of the most powerful generation in modern history, showing how the Boomers ruthlessly enriched themselves at the expense of future generations. Acting without empathy, prudence, or respect for facts--acting, in other words, as sociopaths--the Boomers turned American dynamism into stagnation, inequality, and bipartisan fiasco. The Boomers have set a time bomb for the 2030s, when damage to Social Security, public finances, and the environment will become catastrophic and possibly irreversible--and when, not coincidentally, Boomers will be dying off. Gibney argues that younger generations have a fleeting window to hold the Boomers accountable and begin restoring America.
