  • Author : Fashbaugh Earl Fashbaugh
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 1426922477
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Snapshots written by Fashbaugh Earl Fashbaugh and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snapshots is a kind of verbal photo album that uses the sixty-six books of the Bible as a catalyst to move our thoughts to each of these portions of scripture. Just as a snapshot of days gone by does not capture the entire event, neither does this devotional expand the entire meaning or application for any single book in the Bible. Taking a picture, or snapshot, of a moment does not really do justice to a beautiful scene we witnessed during our vacation, but it puts a stake in our mind. The picture may even suggest that we have experienced something grand and we want to go back and visit the vacation spot again. We will always find something new when we revisit scripture. The Bible is relational in style because it speaks to us in a very personal way. The author provides his own verbal pictures of the first part of each book, illustrating the application according to his experience. Once we begin taking our own snapshots of the Bible, we charter the important scenes that relate to us at that particular time in our life. Every day in this devotional is dedicated to a book in the Bible, sixty-six days in all. Reading scripture should be fun. The author finds humor in many aspects of his own life and shares parallels in order to illustrate the loving nature of God's message to all of us.

  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book TV Snapshots written by Lynn Spigel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In TV Snapshots, Lynn Spigel explores snapshots of people posing in front of their television sets in the 1950s through the early 1970s. Like today’s selfies, TV snapshots were a popular photographic practice through which people visualized their lives in an increasingly mediated culture. Drawing on her collection of over 5,000 TV snapshots, Spigel shows that people did not just watch TV: women used the TV set as a backdrop for fashion and glamour poses; people dressed in drag in front of the screen; and in pinup poses, people even turned the TV setting into a space for erotic display. While the television industry promoted on-screen images of white nuclear families in suburban homes, the snapshots depict a broad range of people across racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds that do not always conform to the reigning middle-class nuclear family ideal. Showing how the television set became a central presence in the home that exceeded its mass entertainment function, Spigel highlights how TV snapshots complicate understandings of the significance of television in everyday life.

Book Snapshots of the Soul

Download or read book Snapshots of the Soul written by Molly Thomasy Blasing and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snapshots of the Soul considers how photography has shaped Russian poetry from the early twentieth century to the present day. Drawing on theories of the lyric and the elegy, the social history of technology, and little-known archival materials, Molly Thomasy Blasing offers close readings of poems by Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, Joseph Brodsky, and Bella Akhmadulina, as well as by the late and post-Soviet poets Andrei Sen-Sen'kov, Arkadii Dragomoshchenko, and Kirill Medvedev, to understand their fascination with the visual language, representational power, and metaphorical possibilities offered by the camera and the photographic image. Within the context of long-standing anxieties about the threat that visual media pose to literary culture, Blasing finds that these poets were attracted to the affinities and tensions that exist between the lyric or elegy and the snapshot. Snapshots of the Soul reveals that at the core of each poet's approach to "writing the photograph" is the urge to demonstrate the superior ability of poetic language to capture and convey human experience.

Book Reel Photos

  • Author : Wendy Sterba
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2015-02-26

Download or read book Reel Photos written by Wendy Sterba and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in an age when the photograph has changed from a physical object into a data file that can be easily manipulated, we tend to believe what we see. But photographs can and do lie. As an object in a film, a photograph’s meaning and function can be even more malleable and deceiving, as new developments in technology are altering how we perceive reality. In Reel Photos: Balancing Art and Truth in Contemporary Film, Wendy Sterba examines the use of photographs in cinema to explore issues of objectivity, subjectivity, fabrication, and fact. This study first looks at the traditional use of the photograph in films such as Blow-Up and then considers similar issues as they relate to the search for truth in detective films like Along Came a Spider, The Bone Collector, and Forgotten. Subsequent chapters explore ambivalence and photographic objectification in films about art photography, including The Governess, Fur, and Closer. Other movies discussed include Inception, Paparazzi, Under Fire, and Somebody Has to Shoot the Picture. By examining the function of the photograph in movies rather than the role of film photography as art, Sterba provides an innovative approach to cinema studies. Utilizing theory in an intelligent but easily understandable way, this book allows readers to re-examine the role of authorship and the value of authentic art. Reel Photos will appeal to students and scholars of cinema, as well as anyone interested in the aesthetics of art and truth in film.

  • ISBN : 9781910164785
  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Pictures from Home written by Larry Sultan and published by Mack. This book was released on 2017 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work -- Provided by the publisher.
