Book excerpt: In Lost Wonders Tom Lathan tells ten powerful stories of species that have lived, died out and been declared extinct since the turn of the twenty-first century. 'Timely, elegiac' Daily Mail 'Superb storytelling . . . an exhilarating and vital book' - Charles Foster, author of Cry of the Wild Many scientists believe that we are currently living through the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, with species disappearing at a rate not seen for tens of millions of years – a trend that will only accelerate as climate change and other pressures intensify. What does it mean to live in such a time? And what exactly do we lose when a species goes extinct? In a series of fascinating encounters with subjects that are now nowhere to be found on Earth – from giant tortoises to minuscule snails the size of sesame seeds, from ocean-hopping trees to fish that wag their tails like puppies – Tom Lathan brings these lost wonders briefly back to life and gives us a tantalising glimpse of what we have lost within our own lifetime. Drawing on the personal recollections of the people who studied these species, as well as those who tried but ultimately failed to save them, and with beautiful illustrations, Lost Wonders is an intimate portrait of the species that have only recently vanished from our world and an urgent warning to hold on all the more tightly to those now slipping from our grasp. Book Thirty Years in the South Seas

Download or read book Thirty Years in the South Seas written by Richard Parkinson and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Parkinson's Thirty Years in the South Seas was first published in 1907. In this 900-page work, Parkinson drew together and expanded on the scientific and popular papers he had been publishing since 1887, creating in the process a landmark ethnography of the Bismarck Archipelago. Parkinson moved to New Britain in 1879, only seven years after the first trader had established himself in the area. Over the next thirty years, he employed many local people on the family's expanding plantations, and travelled widely in the area, trading for produce (especially coconuts), observing traditional life, and buying artefacts for museums in Europe, USA and Australia. His travels covered the islands now known as New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, Manus, Buka and Bougainville, but he also collected information about the mainland of New Guinea (Kaiser Wilhelmsland). His observations covered a wide range of topics, from religious life and ceremonies to artefacts and language. It is clear he talked extensively with people - though mostly with a translator - and compared accounts. He also took many photographs, some 200 of which were included in the volume. Given the period, all his human subjects had to be posed, but the range of associated detail, probably unconsciously included, is substantial. What is particularly important about this work is the period in which it was written. While Parkinson may never have been the first contact of any local people, he was clearly among the first, and observed many societies before they were extensively incorporated into the Western economy, or missionised. Thirty Years in the South Seas is unparalleled in the literature of the Bismarck Archipelago. It is an incomparable picture of a time and place now long past.

Book Wild Justice Stories of the South Seas

Download or read book Wild Justice Stories of the South Seas written by Lloyd Osbourne and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic that describes how, deep down, there appears to be a craving for a more primitive existence; that, while this is sometimes a delusion, the South Seas are more suitable to such aspirations than any other section of the globe. Few races are more appealing than Polynesians. Frank, the winner, is homosexual and extremely courteous; the taller type is frequently quite attractive and just slightly darker than Southern Europeans. Some of their experiences are genuinely lyrical. They have nearly limitless free time to share with the tourists in their midst, half nude, with flowers in their hair, and enough labor to maintain them in wonderful physical form. And soil, humanity's most formidable obstacle, does not exist. No one is cleaner, and no one has such high self-esteem. Sometimes one wonders whether it is not the white barbarian, who is the boss in certain aspects. Samuel Lloyd Osbourne, author, is an American writer and the stepson of Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, with whom he has co-written three works, including The Wrecker, and provided feedback and ideas on others. Osbourne also authored a few short tales and articles.

Book Snailing Round the South Seas

Download or read book Snailing Round the South Seas written by Justin Gerlach and published by . This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the tree snails of the Pacific Islands spans 250 years of the history of biology as a science. This runs from Captain Cook's first voyage of exploration, through the start of evolutionary theory and the development of the science of genetics. 'Snailing round the South Seas' traces this history through the surprisingly central role played by a group of snails. Ultimately this leads into the struggle for survival in the modern world. Partula snails almost disappeared in the most rapid extinction event known so far and the survivors are among the rarest species on earth. Once more these snails have been at the heart of new developments, this time in conservation biology.
