There were now five Christian families at the harbor; none of them wealthy, but all comfortable. If they would give one-tenth of their income, according to Scripture, half the support of a minister would be secured. Then there were friends who would aid. Dr. Sprague had already offered to be responsible for forty dollars a year, if a good preacher could be found. Besides, Mr. Williams stood ready to give even more than a tenth of his income, if necessary. Correspondence was had with a personal acquaintance of Mr. Willliams, who seemed, as he thought, especially adapted to the field, and very soon he was landed by " The Northern Light."
