Book Architectural Guide Chile

Download or read book Architectural Guide Chile written by Veronique Hours and published by Dom Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Atacama Desert and the Pacific Coast: even today the apperception of Chile remains remote and indistinct. There is no doubt that its geographical location - confined between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range - has had a role to play in the relative nescience, although it was the former political situation that led to the country's isolation for almost twenty years. In fact, it is only in these last fifteen years that Chilean architecture has appeared on the international stage, mostly owing to Mathias Klotz, Alejandro Aravena, Smiljan Radic and Pezo von Ellrichsausen, amongst others. Chile can take pride in having built some genuine Modern masterpieces whilst having preserved a close relationship with its culture. During the twentieth century Europe provided Chile with sources of inspiration. Le Corbusier had a great influence on Chilean architects despite never having visited the country; his followers, such as Emilio Duhart, Roberto Dávila and the BVCH office, realised buildings which are today internalised deep in the Chilean psyche. The Bauhaus movement served as another influence for architects such as Sergio Larraín. Overall, this book aims to be a practical reference source of the best architectural works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Chile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy Tale Architecture is a ground-breaking book, the first study to bring architects in conversation with fairy tales in breathtaking designs. Little Red Riding Hood, Baba Yaga, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Snow Queen: these and more than fifteen other stories designed by Bernheimer Architecture, Snøhetta, Rural Studio, LEVENBETTS, and LTL Architects and many other international vanguards have created stunning works for this groundbreaking collection of architectural fairy tales. Story by story, Andrew Bernheimer and Kate Bernheimer--a brother and sister team as in an old fairy tale--have built the ultimate home for lovers of fiction and design. Snow girls and spinning houses. Paper capes and engineered hair braids. Resin bee hives and infinite libraries. Here are futuristic structures made from traditional stories, inspired by everything from Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen and The Little Match Girl to the Brothers Grimm's Rapunzel and The Juniper Tree to fairy tales by Jorge Luis Borges and Joy Williams and from China, Japan, Russia, Nigeria, and Mexico. A desire for story and shelter counts as among our most ancient instincts, and this dual desire continues to inspire our most imaginative architects and authors today. Fairy Tale Architecture invites the reader into a space of wonder, into a new form that will endure ever after.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential survey on Pritzker Prize-winning architect Alvaro Siza's restless creativity, in 30 projects over the past 60 years Once, on the inner flap of one of his sketchbooks, Pritzker Prize-winning Portuguese architect and educator Alvaro Siza (born 1933) described himself and his work with self-deprecating disavowal. Rather than identifying his discipline as architecture, he identified it as "as little as possible." This confessional note is the point of departure for Alvaro Siza: (In)Discipline, a retrospective survey that highlights the currents of disquiet and insubordination within the renowned architect's creative method and production, surveying Siza's design process through a selection of 30 of his projects, built and unbuilt, spanning more than six decades. The publication starts with Siza's first works in Matonsinhos--the Four Dwellings in Matosinhos (1957), the Boa Nova Tea House (1963) and the Ocean Swimming Pool in Leça da Palmeira, Portugal (1973)--and includes recently completed work and projects under construction, including the Mimesis Museum in South Korea (2009), the Church in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, France (2018) and the Residential Tower in New York (ongoing), his first project in the US.

Book The Images of Architects

Download or read book The Images of Architects written by Valerio Olgiati and published by Quart Architektur. This book was released on 2013 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Visible Origin of Architecture: "I asked architects to send me important images that show the basis of their work. Images that are in their head when they think. Images that show the origin of their architecture. In this book we find 44 individual 'musees imaginaires'. The most unique architects living today each present up to 10 images to explain the autobiographical roots of their oeuvre. The images are explanations, metaphors, foundations, memories and intentions. They are poetic and philosophical avowals. They reveal a personal perspective on thoughts. They show the roots of architecture and expectations concerning projects. Conscious and unconscious. This book has the format of a reader. As little as possible is said. The images are small, legible and interpretable as icons. As individual collections, they present a personal view of an individual world, while as a whole they provide a universal view of the perceptible origin of contemporary architecture." Valerio Olgiati The images submitted to Olgiati are personal, confidential and poetic revelations of the deeper foundations on which the architects' projects are based. The collection acts as a kind of depth gauge of contemporary world architecture. The list comprises the 44 most unique architects living today: David Adjaye, Francisco Aires Mateus, Manuel Aires Mateus, Alejandro Aravena, Ben van Berkel, Mario Botta, Alberto Campo Baeza, Adam Caruso, Peter St John, David Chipperfield, Preston Scott Cohen, Hermann Czech, Roger Diener, Peter Eisenman, Sou Fujimoto, Anton Garcia-Abril, Go Hasegawa, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Steven Holl, Anne Holtrop, Junya Ishigami, Arata Isozaki, Toyo Ito, Bijoy Jain (Studio Mumbai), Momoyo Kaijima, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (Atelier Bow-Wow), Christian Kerez, Hans Kollhoff, Winy Maas (MVRDV), Peter Markli, Jurgen Mayer H., Richard Meier, Glenn Murcutt, Ryue Nishizawa, Valerio Olgiati, John Pawson, Cecilia Puga, Smiljan Radic, Richard Rogers, Kazuyo Sejima, Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, Miroslav ik, Alvaro Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Peter Wilson (Bolles + Wilson), Peter Zumthor."
