Book The Diachrony of Ditransitives

Download or read book The Diachrony of Ditransitives written by Chiara Fedriani and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While ample studies exist on ditransitives in various languages, notably from a typological perspective, more work needs to be done on identifying the main processes and factors that trigger and constrain the changes they undergo over time. The goal of this volume is to help fill this gap by bringing together data and information on individual languages that have thus far been left out of the discussion and by expanding our knowledge of already studied linguistic traditions so as to achieve a broader diachronic description. Since one of the distinctive features of ditransitives is their synchronic variability in terms of structural alternation and alignment split, diachronic research can throw up new insights into developmental dynamics that are eminently complementary; namely, on the one hand, the emergence, development and loss of construction alternation and, on the other, the acquisition of new functions over time. The analyses offered in the book yield different and interconnected answers to the general question of how ditransitives change by drawing on different functional principles that play a role in the diachronic reorganization of this dynamic domain and by providing a number of original theoretical suggestions.

Book The Future of Identity in the Information Society

Download or read book The Future of Identity in the Information Society written by Kai Rannenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digitising personal information is changing our ways of identifying persons and managing relations. What used to be a "natural" identity, is now as virtual as a user account at a web portal, an email address, or a mobile phone number. It is subject to diverse forms of identity management in business, administration, and among citizens. Core question and source of conflict is who owns how much identity information of whom and who needs to place trust into which identity information to allow access to resources. This book presents multidisciplinary answers from research, government, and industry. Research from states with different cultures on the identification of citizens and ID cards is combined towards analysis of HighTechIDs and Virtual Identities, considering privacy, mobility, profiling, forensics, and identity related crime. "FIDIS has put Europe on the global map as a place for high quality identity management research." –V. Reding, Commissioner, Responsible for Information Society and Media (EU)

Book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish

Download or read book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish written by Katrien Dora Verveckken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification is central to human experience (cf. Aristotle’s Organon): the most basic aspects of human life and reasoning involve quantity assessment. This study sheds lights on a highly frequent way to express quantification in Spanish, viz. the binominal quantifier (e.g. un aluviónN1 de llamadasN2 ‘a flood of calls’) which assesses the quantity of N2 in terms of N1. This volume offers a corpus-based, cognitive-functional analysis of binominal quantifiers (BQ) in Spanish. The first part is dedicated to the development of BQs and starts from the assumption that BQs are cross-linguistically involved in grammaticalization. This monograph frames the history of BQs in Spanish in terms of constructional levels of change and highlights the complex interplay between analogical thinking and conceptual persistence. The second part motivates both the ample variation in the paradigm of quantifying nouns and their combinatorial pattern by the very same mechanism of conceptually-driven analogy. The study thus yields an innovative functional model of BQs in Spanish, in synchrony and in diachrony, with major implications for reference grammars and theory building.

Download or read book Quantum Hall Effect written by Keshav Narin Shrivastava and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the calculations of Laughlin and Schrieffer and shows how they are modified when the magnetic length is treated properly. The attachment of flux quanta to the electron has been discussed at length and experimental reports are re-examined in the light of variable magnetic length. The angular momentum theory of the Quantum Hall Effect explains the experimental data as is well based on theoretical grounds. An effort is made to compromise the flux-attached electron theory with the angular momentum theory which shows that some of the composite fermions become bosons. The Quantum Hall effect is explained on the basis of angular momentum theory. The importance of the negative spin has been discussed. The considerable amount of literature is reviewed.

Book Theoretical Biochemistry

Download or read book Theoretical Biochemistry written by Leif A. Eriksson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-02-19 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical chemistry has been an area of tremendous expansion and development over the past decade; from an approach where we were able to treat only a few atoms quantum mechanically or make fairly crude molecular dynamics simulations, into a discipline with an accuracy and predictive power that has rendered it an essential complementary tool to experiment in basically all areas of science. This volume gives a flavour of the types of problems in biochemistry that theoretical calculations can solve at present, and illustrates the tremendous predictive power these approaches possess.A wide range of computational approaches, from classical MD and Monte Carlo methods, via semi-empirical and DFT approaches on isolated model systems, to Car-Parinello QM-MD and novel hybrid QM/MM studies are covered. The systems investigated also cover a broad range; from membrane-bound proteins to various types of enzymatic reactions as well as inhibitor studies, cofactor properties, solvent effects, transcription and radiation damage to DNA.

Book Combination of Evidence in Dempster Shafer Theory

Download or read book Combination of Evidence in Dempster Shafer Theory written by Kari Sentz and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dempster-Shafer theory offers an alternative to traditional probabilistic theory for the mathematical representation of uncertainty. The significant innovation of this framework is that it allows for the allocation of a probability mass to sets or intervals. Dempster-Shafer theory does not require an assumption regarding the probability of the individual constituents of the set or interval. This is a potentially valuable tool for the evaluation of risk and reliability in engineering applications when it is not possible to obtain a precise measurement from experiments, or when knowledge is obtained from expert elicitation. An important aspect of this theory is the combination of evidence obtained from multiple sources and the modeling of conflict between them. This report surveys a number of possible combination rules for Dempster-Shafer structures and provides examples of the implementation of these rules for discrete and interval-valued data.

Book Composition Deep Structure and Evolution of Continents

Download or read book Composition Deep Structure and Evolution of Continents written by R.D. van der Hilst and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-10-22 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ensemble of manuscripts presented in this special volume captures the stimulating cross-disciplinary dialogue from the International Symposium on Deep Structure, Composition, and Evolution of Continents, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 15-17 October 1997. It will provide an update on recent research developments and serve as a starting point for research of the many outstanding issues. After its formation at mid-oceanic spreading centers, oceanic lithosphere cools, thickens, and subsides, until it subducts into the deep mantle beneath convergent margins. As a result of this continuous recycling process oceanic lithosphere is typically less than 200 million years old (the global average is about 80 Myr). A comprehensive, multi-disciplinary study of continents involves a wide range of length scales: tiny rock samples and diamond inclusions may yield isotope and trace element signatures diagnostic for the formation age and evolution of (parts of) cratons, while geophysical techniques (e.g., seismic and electromagnetic imaging) constrain variations of elastic and conductive properties over length scales ranging from several to many thousand kilometers. Integrating and reconciling this information is far from trivial and, as several papers in this volume document, the relationships between, for instance, formation age and tectonic behavior on the one hand and the seismic signature, heat flow, and petrology on the other may not be uniform but may vary both within as well as between cratons. These observations complicate attempts to determine the variations of one particular observable (e.g., heat flow, lithosphere thickness) as a function of another (e.g., crustal age) on the basis of global data compilations and tectonic regionalizations. Important conclusions of the work presented here are that (1) continental deformation, for instance shortening, is not restricted to the crust but also involves the lithospheric mantle; (2) the high wavespeed part of continental lithospheric mantle is probably thinner than inferred previously from vertically travelling body waves or form global surface-wave models; and (3) the seismic signature of ancient continents is more complex than expected from a uniform relationship with crustal age.

Book Science and Engineering of Casting Solidification

Download or read book Science and Engineering of Casting Solidification written by Doru Michael Stefanescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We come to know about the world in two distinctive ways: by direct perception and by application of rational reasoning which, in its highest form, is mathematical thinking. The belief that the underlying order of the world can be expressed in mathematical form lies at the very heart of science. In other words, we only know what we can describe through mathematical models. Casting of metals has evolved first as witchcraft, to gradually become an art, then a technology, and only recently a science. Many of the processes used in metal casting are still empirical in nature, but many others are deep-rooted in mathematics. In whatever form, casting of metals is an activity fundamental to the very existence of our world, as we know it today. Foundry reports indicate that solidification modeling is not only a cost-effective investment but also a major technical asset. It helps foundries move into markets with more complcx and technically demanding work. The ability to predict internal soundness allows foundries to improve quality and deliveries, and provides the information required to make key manufacturing decisions based on accurate cost estimates before pattern construction even begins. The acceptance of computational modeling of solidification by the industry is a direct result of the gigantic strides made by solidification science in the last two decades.
