Book Globalization and Its Discontents

Download or read book Globalization and Its Discontents written by Joseph E. Stiglitz and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2003-04-17 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful, unsettling book gives us a rare glimpse behind the closed doors of global financial institutions by the winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics. When it was first published, this national bestseller quickly became a touchstone in the globalization debate. Renowned economist and Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz had a ringside seat for most of the major economic events of the last decade, including stints as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and chief economist at the World Bank. Particularly concerned with the plight of the developing nations, he became increasingly disillusioned as he saw the International Monetary Fund and other major institutions put the interests of Wall Street and the financial community ahead of the poorer nations. Those seeking to understand why globalization has engendered the hostility of protesters in Seattle and Genoa will find the reasons here. While this book includes no simple formula on how to make globalization work, Stiglitz provides a reform agenda that will provoke debate for years to come. Rarely do we get such an insider's analysis of the major institutions of globalization as in this penetrating book. With a new foreword for this paperback edition.

Book Globalization and its opportunities for small and medium sized enterprises

Download or read book Globalization and its opportunities for small and medium sized enterprises written by Christoph Lohrmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 100%, University of Sussex, language: English, abstract: Small- and medium-sized companies (SMEs) represent about 95% of enterprises in Europe, with a high amount of small companies ranging between 22% - 66% as well as high importance all over the globe. Nevertheless, the sector of SMEs has been ignored and poorly understood for many decades. Eventually, a research conducted by the economist David Birch published in 1979 revealed that especially SMEs are responsible for economic growth in general and are the prime source for job creation, accounting for up to 60% of the overall employment. As a result, the OECD considers them to be the core for economic growth and the dominant form of businesses worldwide in the future, acknowledging the importance of SMEs within global economy. Knowledge about small- and medium-sized enterprises has become even more important due to the fact that the interest of small firms to operate on foreign markets increased in the last decades. This essay depicts the characteristics of small- and medium-sized companies, compares it to multinational companies (MNCs) to determine advantages as well as disadvantages and, finally, examines certain opportunities for SMEs offered by globalization and internationalisation.

Book SMEs in an Era of Globalization

Download or read book SMEs in an Era of Globalization written by Ilan Bijaoui and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the driving forces behind globalization and proposes innovative ways for small and medium-enterprises (SMEs) to confront them. More than ever, sustainable competitive advantage requires SMEs to continually adapt their strategy and confront new and current competition in the international market. SMEs working with multinational companies could also benefit from winning strategies based on a sensible analysis of rational and irrational phenomena at the micro- and macro-economic levels. This book uses different models developed and established through international business experiences to determine the relevant strategy in the global market. It illustrates each model through real, successful case studies of globalization of factor, efficiency, and innovation-driven SMEs. It will benefit scholars of entrepreneurship, international business, regional development as well as managers, governmental institutions, and regional development, and consultants to SMEs.

Book Globalization and Entrepreneurship in Small Countries

Download or read book Globalization and Entrepreneurship in Small Countries written by Mirjana Radović-Marković and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changeable business environment requires a new business framework and an understanding of the global market trends and the culture that will impact on business. Globalization and Entrepreneurship in Small Countries considers important business principles and makes them accessible for entrepreneurs and small business owners. It addresses the role of managers and leaders and management techniques in the context of global strategy of companies, as well as the culture diversity that comes with globalization of organizations. To meet the constantly changing conditions and demands, business must transcend boundaries to get what it needs regardless of where it exists – geographically, organizationally, and functionally. This book draws together earlier literature on SME development and internationalization from disparate sources into a cohesive body of work, which traces the evolution of our understanding of the topic. It explores just how globalization affects the demand for business and entrepreneurship, and will therefore be of interest to researchers, academics, policymakers, and students in the fields of entrepreneurship, globalisation, organisational studies, and SMEs development in small countries.

Book Globalization of Small Economies as a Strategic Behavior in International Business

Download or read book Globalization of Small Economies as a Strategic Behavior in International Business written by Sergio A. Castello and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book postulates the proposition that small economies exhibit a higher degree of outward orientation and structural adaptability, compared to their larger counterparts within the context of the European Union and two case studies (i.e. Catalonia and New Zealand). The number of nations has doubled in the last half of the century to around 200 independent economic units. Moreover, the break-up of the former Soviet bloc into a large number of small independent nations in Central and Eastern Europe, and the continued threat of separatist groups (i.e. Canada, Spain, and Sri Lanka) have sparked economists' interest to focus on the size of nations once again. This book offers a more comprehensive measurement of smallness than the conventional one for the analysis of the globalization strategies and flexibility of countries to overcome smallness. Small independent economic units, when economically successful, tend to be more export focused in manufacturing, likely to specialize in differentiated manufactures, more actively involved with direct overseas businesses, more sensitive in strategically managing exchange rates, likely to be in a better position to achieve price stability, more actively involved in international trade through varying degrees of economic integration, likely to have a higher degree of flexibility, more actively involved to forge a complementary government-firm relationship, and likely to have a higher degree of corporatism.

Book Small scale Industries in India

Download or read book Small scale Industries in India written by K. R. Vijayarani and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-scale industries are considered a harbinger of economic progress. A growing economy always needs the presence of small enterprises. In a labor-abundant and capital-scarce country like India, small-scale industries have come to occupy a significant position in the planned industrialization of the economy. Ever since the announcement of the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1948, India's small-scale industries have occupied a prominent place in the overall strategy of industrial development. Successive Five Year Plans have allocated increasing resources for the development of small industries. In view of the abundance of labor, scarcity of capital, and rural nature of the economy, the preference for small industries is natural. In the wake of the globalization wave sweeping around the world, new opportunities and challenges have emerged for the small industries. Appropriate policies are needed to meet these challenges to sustain the growth of small industries. This book explores policies and issues of India's small-scale industries.
