Book Design and Analysis of Ecological Experiments

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Ecological Experiments written by Sam Scheiner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-25 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to make some underutilized but potentially very useful methods in experimental design and analysis available to ecologists, and to encourage better use of standard statistical techniques. Ecology has become more and more an experimental science in both basic and applied work, but experiments in the field and in the laboratory often present formidable statistical difficulties. Organized around providing solutions to ecological problems, this book offers ways to improve the statistical aspects of conducting manipulative ecological experiments, from setting them up to interpreting and reporting the results. An abundance of tools, including advanced approaches, are made available to ecologists in step-by-step examples, with computer code provided for common statistical packages. This is an essential how-to guide for the working ecologist and for graduate students preparing for research and teaching careers in the field of ecology.

Book Computational Methods and Experiments in Materials Characterization III

Download or read book Computational Methods and Experiments in Materials Characterization III written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, engineering materials could be characterized successfully using relatively simple testing procedures. As materials technology advances, interest is growing in materials possessing complex meso-, micro- and nano-structures, which to a large extent determine their physical properties and behaviour. The purposes of materials modelling are many: optimization, investigation of failure, simulation of production processes, to name but a few. Modelling and characterisation are closely intertwined, increasingly so as the complexity of the material increases. Characterisation, in essence, is the connection between the abstract material model and the real-world behaviour of the material in question. Characterisation of complex materials therefore may require a combination of experimental techniques and computation. This book publishes papers presented at the Third International Conference on Computational Methods and Experiments in Material Characterisation.Topics covered include: Composites; Ceramics; Alloys; Cements and Cement Based Materials; Biomaterials; Thin Films and Coatings; Advanced Materials; Imaging Analysis; Thermal Analysis; New Methods; Surface Chemistry, Nano Indentation; Continuum Methods; Particle Models; Damage Mechanics; Innovative Techniques; Stochastic Methods.

Book Foundations of Human Sociality

Download or read book Foundations of Human Sociality written by Joseph Patrick Henrich and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2004 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What motives underlie the ways humans interact socially? Are these the same for all societies? Are these part of our nature, or influenced by our environments? Over the last decade, research in experimental economics has emphatically falsified the textbook representation of Homo economicus. Hundreds of experiments suggest that people care not only about their own material payoffs, but also about such things as fairness, equity, and reciprocity. However, this research left fundamental questions unanswered: Are such social preferences stable components of human nature, or are they modulated by economic, social, and cultural environments? Until now, experimental research could not address this question because virtually all subjects had been university students. Combining ethnographic and experimental approaches to fill this gap, this book breaks new ground in reporting the results of a large cross-cultural study aimed at determining the sources of social (non-selfish) preferences that underlie the diversity of human sociality. In this study, the same experiments carried out with university students were performed in fifteen small-scale societies exhibiting a wide variety of social, economic, and cultural conditions. The results show that the variation in behaviour is far greater than previously thought, and that the differences between societies in market integration and the importance of cooperation explain a substantial portion of this variation, which individual-level economic and demographic variables could not. The results also trace the extent to which experimental play mirrors patterns of interaction found in everyday life. The book includes a succinct but substantive introduction to the use of game theory as an analytical tool, and to its use in the social sciences for the rigorous testing of hypotheses about fundamental aspects of social behaviour outside artificially constructed laboratories. The editors also summarize the results of the fifteencase studies in a suggestive chapter about the scope of the project.
