Book Responses of Plants and Small Mammals to Fire

Download or read book Responses of Plants and Small Mammals to Fire written by Jose Silva-Lugo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study determined if there were structural and compositional changes in coastal scrubby flatwoods after prescribed fire, if small mammals used wetlands as temporal refugia after fire, and if prescribed burning had a negative effect on the survival of the small mammal species in Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve, Florida, USA. The experimental design consisted of two treatment and two control sites that were sampled before and after burning during three years. Mice were marked to monitor movements between scrubs and wetlands. Woody species had structural and compositional changes during the first three months postburn, but there were more compositional than structural changes after that. In treatment sites, mice were captured mainly in the scrub (75%) before burning, they used the vegetation surrounding wetlands as refugia for 11 months after burning, and they returned to the scrub after that. In control sites, mice were captured mainly in the scrub (91%). Fire did not have a negative effect on the survival of mice species. These results will provide guidance in prescribed burning plans to park and land managers, and fire ecologists to maintain viable populations of small mammals.

Book Small Mammal Response to Habitat Change Following Fire in the Taiga of Southeastern Manitoba

Download or read book Small Mammal Response to Habitat Change Following Fire in the Taiga of Southeastern Manitoba written by Monica Reid-Wong and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of fire on small mammal populations was investigated in the taiga of southeastern Manitoba. Small mammals were sampled by annual removal trapping in six different habitats over twenty-five years at Taiga Biological Station (TBS). Changes in temporal patterns of short-term abundance and long-term population synchronicity were investigated for fluctuating numbers of small mammals. The southern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi),the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), and the masked shrew (Sorex cinereus), were the three most common small mammals captured. Examination of population fluctuations revealed that while fire-induced changes in food availability, cover and moisture were likely responsible for differences in small mammal abundance, populations of individual species were alternatively affected by unknown, large-scale, synchronizing influences. This discovery became evident through the common occurrence of similar peak abundance years for C. gapperi, regardless of habitat-type or distance between sampling sites. Additionally, the examination of annual combined small mammal biomass revealed a distinct pattern, with a repetitive maxima occurring every 3- to 4- yrs at TBS across all six sites...

Book Indirect Effects of Fire on the Small Mammal Community of a Tallgrass Blackland Prairie Remnant in Texas

Download or read book Indirect Effects of Fire on the Small Mammal Community of a Tallgrass Blackland Prairie Remnant in Texas written by Brianna N. Kirchner and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated effects of fire on vegetation and small mammals in a tallgrass blackland prairie remnant. At Leonhardt Prairie, vegetation and small mammals were monitored from February 2007 through May 2008 with a burn occurring Fall 2007. Pre-burn, dense litter and vegetative cover accommodated two dominant species, Baiomys taylori and Sigmodon hispidus, with a relative abundance (captures/100 trapnights) of 5.85 and 4.99, respectively. Post-burn, removal of vegetation led to an increase of Peromyscus maniculatus from a relative abundance of 0.12 pre-burn to 5.23 post-burn. Baiomys taylori and Sigmodon hispidus were not captured on burned sections for 7 months, though the unburned section maintained capture rates similar to pre-burn data. Shift in species composition has occurred from Baiomys taylori and Sigmodon hispidus to Peromyscus maniculatus, suggesting short-term fire response of small mammals in tallgrass prairies. This secondary successional cycle of 7 months suggests the prairie's natural fire frequency was high.

Book Small Mammal Response to Food Fire Herbicide and Predation in Longleaf Pine Ecosystem

Download or read book Small Mammal Response to Food Fire Herbicide and Predation in Longleaf Pine Ecosystem written by Binab Karmacharya and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence to support effect of prescribed fire and herbicide-fire combination on survival of cotton mice was weak; apparent monthly survival increased after these treatments. There was strong evidence that prescribed fire and herbicide-fire treatments affected survival of cotton rats, but the evidence of a herbicide effect alone was weak; survival rates declined after all three treatments. Fire alone had a stronger effect than an herbicide-fire treatment in both species. A detailed study of ecological consequences of these alternative management practices should be carried out before replacing or augmenting prescribed fire with herbicide.

Book Responses of Plant and Small Mammal Communities to Prescribed Burning in Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve

Download or read book Responses of Plant and Small Mammal Communities to Prescribed Burning in Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve written by Jose Lorenzo Silva-Lugo and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Although prescribed burning is an important management tool for ecosystem restoration in Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve, this is the first study that analyzes the effect of prescribed burning on plants and small mammals. In addition, this is the first research carried out on plant community response to prescribed fire in coastal scrub on the west side of Florida, and the 12th study about the effects of prescribed burning on small mammals in Florida. The main objectives were to determine: (a) if there were structural and compositional changes in the plant community after prescribed burning, (b) if small mammals used wetlands as temporal refugia after prescribed fire; and (c) if prescribed burning had a negative effect on the survival of the small mammal species.

Book Short term Response of Herpetofauna and Small Mammal Populations to the Season of Prescribed Burning in a Southern Appalachian Upland Hardwood Forest

Download or read book Short term Response of Herpetofauna and Small Mammal Populations to the Season of Prescribed Burning in a Southern Appalachian Upland Hardwood Forest written by Tyler J. Seiboldt and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed fire has long been used to restore disturbance dependent ecosystems, and has primarily been conducted in the dormant season due to more predictable environmental conditions. Short-term response of herpetofauna and small mammals to single dormant season burns in the southern Appalachians have been studied, and few effects were detected. However, response to growing season burns has not been studied. From late-May to early-August 2013 and 2014, drift fences with pitfall and funnel traps were used to capture herpetofauna, and Sherman traps were used to capture small mammals in a replicated study comparing controls (unburned) and two prescribed fire treatments (n=3 each): 1) growing season burn (burned April 2013; trapped in 2013 and 2014), and 2) dormant season burn (burned March 2014; trapped in 2014 only). A total of 280 amphibians of 11 species, 100 reptiles of 11 species, and 101 small mammals of 4 species were captured. Reptile relative abundance was found to be significantly higher in growing season burn treatments compared with control in 2013. However, results indicate no difference in reptile, amphibian, or small mammal relative abundance in 2014, after both treatments had been implemented. This study suggests that the season of prescribed burning in the southern Appalachian upland hardwood forest will does not negatively affect herpetofauna and small mammal abundance, at least in the short term. Nevertheless, region specific studies are needed to fully understand the impacts of season of prescribed burn on these wildlife communities and populations.
