In City of Slow Dissolve, John Chávez takes readers through this journey--the "slow dissolve," the unpacking and re-packing of self that must take place before healing can begin. Fusing language poetry, lyric, and narrative, Chávez uses syntactical play, rhythm, and repetition of key words and lines to lend immediacy to emotions and actions. He tips words and images on their heads and invites readers to reexamine people and places that are at once familiar and utterly unfamiliar.

Download or read book The Manageable Cold written by Timothy McBride and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-30 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunningly mature and confident debut collection, The Manageable Cold showcases Timothy McBride's mastery of a wide range of forms and subjects, combining consummate craftsmanship with emotional richness. Whether his attention is focused on boxing, jazz, contranyms, science, or relationships, McBride breathes new life into the sonnet and the villanelle and handles blank verse with the utmost ease. The combination of traditional techniques and McBride's thoroughly modern sensibility gives rise to poems that resemble the rigorously embodied works of Robert Frost, Howard Nemerov, and Mary Oliver, appearing at once utterly fresh and immemorially old. --Book Jacket.

Download or read book Dissolve written by Sherwin Bitsui and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Bitsui’s poetry returns things to their basic elements and voice in a flowing language rife with illuminating images. A great reading experience for those who like serious and innovative poetry.” —Library Journal Drawing upon Navajo history and enduring tradition, Sherwin Bitsui leads us on a treacherous, otherworldly passage through the American Southwest. Fluidly shape-shifting and captured by language that functions like a moving camera, Dissolve is urban and rural, past and present in the haze of the reservation. Bitsui proves himself to be one of this century’s most haunting, raw, and uncompromising voices. From “(Untitled)”: . . . Jeweled with houseflies, leather rattles, foil-wrapped, ferment in beaked masks on the shores of evaporating lakes. This plot, now a hotel garden, its fountain gushing forth— the slashed wrists of the Colorado River. Sherwin Bitsui was raised in White Cone, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. He is the author of two other books of poetry, among them Flood Song, which won an American Book Award. He currently lives in Arizona where he has serves on the faculty of the Institute of American Indian Arts.

Download or read book Powell and Pressburger s War written by Greg M. Colón Semenza and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A focused study on Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's cinematic contributions to the war effort, arguing for the centrality of propaganda to their work as film artists. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are widely hailed as two of the greatest filmmakers in British cinema history. The release of their first movie, The Spy in Black, barely preceded the beginning of World War Two, and a number of their early masterworks, including The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, A Canterbury Tale, and A Matter of Life and Death, were produced in the service of the war effort. Through exploring the relationship between art and propaganda, this book shows that Powell and Pressburger saw no contradiction between their aesthetic ambitions and their cinematic war work: propaganda imperatives were highly conducive to their objectives as both commercial cinema practitioners and artists. Drawing on production materials from the archives of the British Film Institute, this book charts three phases in Powell and Pressburger's wartime career: from first-time collaborators who strive to reconcile popular cinematic forms with developing notions of what constitutes effective propaganda; to accomplished, and sometimes controversial, propagandists whose movies center upon Britain's relations with its enemies and allies; to filmmakers whose responsiveness to the propaganda requirements of the late war is matched by a focus, shared by the Ministry of Information, on what the post-war future would bring.
