Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.

Download or read book A Community at the Heart of Europe written by Zaira Vidau and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled in the heart of the “Old Continent”, along the border between Slovenia and the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Slovenes in Italy form one of Europe’s national minorities. This volume presents an up-to-date overview of their efforts to preserve their cultural and linguistic heritage and distinctiveness. The Slovene national community in Italy has been affected by profound and at times devastating events, including both World Wars, the fascist period and the lengthy process of defining the border between Italy and Yugoslavia. The collapse of the Berlin Wall, Slovenia’s declaration of independence and the process of globalisation have provided the community with new forms of protection, but also presented it with further challenges associated with adopting its development guidelines. This book is dedicated to researchers on ethnic studies, civil rights activists and politicians dealing with minority and human rights and diversity management, as well as tourists, teachers and students.
Download or read book Literary Multilingualism in the Borderlands written by Marianna Deganutti and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on literary multilingualism and specifically on the challenging condition of writing in Trieste, a key European borderland located at the intersection between the Latin, Germanic and Slav civilisations. By focusing on some of the most representative modern writers operating in the area, such as Italo Svevo, Boris Pahor, Claudio Magris and James Joyce, this work offers a wide-ranging discussion of multilingual practices deriving from the different language choices made by these writers. Along with the most common manifest strategies, such as code-switching and hybridisations, Deganutti highlights how Triestine writers found innovative latent practices to engage with multilingualism, such as writing in an analogical way or exploiting internal linguistic stratifications. Moreover, she shows how they provided answers to the several linguistic, cultural and even political challenges they were subjected to, with the result of redefining linguistic boundaries that clearly separate different tongues. This book will be of interest to graduate students, researchers and academics interested in literary multilingualism in the fields of sociolinguistics, borderland studies and comparative literature.

Download or read book Balkan and South Slavic Enclaves in Italy written by Thede Kahl and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of new writings dealing with some of the Balkan linguistic varieties spoken in north-eastern, central and southern Italy. It brings together twenty-two papers, some of which investigate the mutual influences between each of these Balkan and South Slavic language varieties and their neighbouring Italian dialects. Other contributions study common tendencies which do not just pertain to local contacts, but which are of greater significance for the history of linguistic and cultural contacts in Italy. All of the chapters here present new empirical findings and reflect the breadth and diversity of current research in the fields of areal linguistics, language variation, Balkan dialectology, language contact, types of Balkan convergences, types of structure transfers, the borrowing of structural patterns, and directions of grammaticalisation.

Download or read book Il confine orientale written by Giorgio Federico Siboni and published by Oltre edizioni. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Red Adriatic written by Eric R. Terzuolo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All European Communist parties define themselves largely in terms of their relationship, amicable or not, to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Consequently, most studies of relations between Communist parties emphasize interactions with the Soviets. However, not all the smaller European Communist parties interact strictly through the medium of Moscow. There exists an extensive, genuinely bilateral aspect to the relationship between Italian and Yugoslav Communists. Both have tended to seek distinctively national paths and, to differing degrees, both have been at odds with the Soviets. The history of Italo-Yugoslav nationality and border disputes, as well as major differences in how the two Communist parties have approached those disputes, has done much to condition inter-party relations. Red Adriatic is the first book to focus on relations between Communist parties in adjacent countries. As such, it offers insights, both practical and theoretical, into problems of inter-party relations. Based on archival sources, as well as on published materials, it also contributes to the individual historiographies of the Italian and Yugoslav Communist parties. The study speaks to several issues in comparative Communist studies, contrasting the different ways in which the two parties have adapted to national circumstances, balancing nationalism and internationalism, and to their different leadership styles.
