By highlighting the topic of 'well-being' as a major connecting point between the SDGs, the GEM and other surveys the book has three main purposes: firstly, it shows that GEM data can contribute significantly to the monitoring process of the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals; secondly it analyses the survey’s capacity to add value to the global discussion on well-being; thirdly, the book places emphasis on the pressing need for data in order to monitor the achievement of the SDGs. Ultimately, the book provides sound research that can serve as a basis for discussion with the UN on potential partnerships within the framework of SDG 17. It gives an overview of school policy developments that represents the diversity of Europe within a comparative framework. It takes point of departure in the fact that European countries in their school and education policies have been increasingly aligning with each other, mostly via transnational collaborations, the OECD, EU, and the Bologna Process. Even the IEA has been instrumental to motivate alignments by means of influential surveys, knowledge production and methodological development. This alignment in terms of common standards, social technologies, qualification frameworks and so forth have aimed at facilitating mobility of students, workers, business and so forth as well as fostering a European identity among citizens from Europe’s patchwork of small and medium-size countries, representing a patchwork of different languages, cultures and societal contexts. In national recontextualizations, however, alignments have been continuously contested according to the particularities of what has been possible educationally and politically in the different national contexts. Furthermore, the return of national(isms) as well as the rise of edubusiness and digitalization have been increasingly influential. This book thus concludes that increasing transnational alignments have to be observed with meticulous attention to different national contexts that matter greatly.

Book excerpt: The present document provides a summary of the progress made by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the United Nations Member States in implementing the ECE Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) during the implementation phase 2017-2019 (also referred to as the “implementation phase IV”). The present synthesis report is based on the analysis of 34 national implementation reports submitted by Member States for that phase. The national implementation reports, reveal that many countries have policies in place to support ESD but the challenge remains of coordinating those policies and increasing the number of countries with national implementation plans for ESD, as observed during the previous implementation phases. Many countries have expanded policies to the non-formal and informal sectors, encouraged synergies and involved various stakeholders in ESD. However, the 'whole-institution approach' needs to be re-examined and further implemented in the context of some countries, mainly in relation to incentives and policies. In almost all countries, educators reported having received training on ESD competences during pre- and in-service training. Tools and materials for ESD are widely produced through national strategies and investment of public money, but more needs to be done in terms of dissemination and accessibility of materials and the establishment of quality control criteria. Many Governments recognize the need to connect research to ESD policy and practice. Concerning the promotion of research and development, the weakest element is the evaluation of the Strategy's outcomes.

Each chapter includes a summary of scholarly contributions published on the topic in English-language and local language journals, a discussion of origins, composition by industry, and location choice within the country from 1995-2018, using Dunning's (1980) eclectic paradigm as a discussion framework. The chapters conclude with prospects for FDI over the next twenty-five years with emphasis on economic growth projections, EU integration, and other relevant country-specific considerations the local authors deem relevant. Special attention is given to specific companies operating in Yugoslavia prior to its breakup and how these firms have been impacted by dissolution, recession, efforts toward European Union membership.
