Book excerpt: In a time of hardship and heartbreak, sometimes, reality just isnt enough. Slipping Reality is the story of fourteen-year-old Katelyn Emerson, who, when faced with the glaring reality of her brothers illness, rebels against the truth by slipping away into the depths of her own imagination. There, she finds the kind of support and comfort she feels she deserves. There, she does not have to feel so alone. And yet, as Katelyns grasp on reality begins to unravel, so too does the story of a girl who grew up too fast and fell apart too soon. Emily Beaver's debut novel is a coming of age story that deals with the trials of young grief, insight, and growth where it's least expected.

Book excerpt: Symbolic Play: The Development of Social Understanding describes the development of symbolic play from infancy through the preschool years. This text is divided into 12 chapters that focus on make-believe as an activity within which young children spontaneously represent and practice their understanding of the social world. The first chapter introduces the development of event schemata produced in symbolic play, about children's management of the playframe, and about the development of subjunctive, or "what if" thought. The next chapters are devoted to the development of joint pretending, specifically the use if shared scripts in the organization of make-believe play and the subtleties of metacommunication. These chapters also emphasize the supporting role of the mother in early collaborative make-believe. These topics are followed by discussions of the child's growing ability to represent the internal states of the inanimate figures whose doing can vicariously enacts. The remaining chapters focus on social interaction through symbolic play with dolls, toy animals, object props, and language. This book will prove useful to psychologists and researchers in the fields of human development, society, and family.

Book excerpt: "Extraordinary"--THE NEW YORKER In the formally innovative tradition of Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and Ducks, Newburyport comes a dazzlingly original, shot-in-the-arm of a debut that reveals a young woman's every thought over the course of one deceptively ordinary day. She wakes up, goes to work. Watches the clock and checks her phone. But underneath this monotony there's something else going on: something under her skin. Relayed in interweaving columns that chart the feedback loop of memory, the senses, and modern distractions with wit and precision, our narrator becomes increasingly anxious as the day moves on: Is she overusing the heart emoji? Isn't drinking eight glasses of water a day supposed to fix everything? Why is the etiquette of the women's bathroom so fraught? How does she define rape? And why can't she stop scratching? Fiercely moving and slyly profound, little scratch is a defiantly playful look at how our minds function in--and survive--the darkest moments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 4th Battle of the Titans: Clash between Natural and the Supernatural ΙΙ - The Ascent of the Natural. The Crystals Series is a storyline in the form of a novel which starts from the very beginning of the creation of the Universe, traverses the whole human civilization, reaches the present and continues into the future, summarily following the evolutionary course of human civilization. In the first part of the Clash between the Supernatural – Natural, we followed the evolutionary path of life from 50 million years ago to 200 thousand years ago, we witnessed the first battles between the Supernatural and the Natural, the creation of the Balkan Peninsula, the domination of the mammals, but we followed the separate phylogenetic tree of humankind. A summary reference was made to the educational/training system necessary for the development of sentient beings at the three spiritual levels, the ten -faces-, the three consciences, the four paths and the five plagues that directly and indirectly impact on their lives. In the second part of the Clash between the Supernatural – Natural, 200 to 100 thousand years ago, we witness the slow-paced developmental modification of the Homo sapiens-sapiens, during which, life begins to acquire full self-knowledge. The final trial and oath-taking of Zeus as the Warrior of the Light take place as well as his efforts to take responsibility for reinstating the Natural Forces. Clashes of epic proportions, battles of the Titans and dwells between the Titans and the Olympians dominate the scene. In the 4th Battle of the Titans, we are witnessing the turning point of nature to the logical, the incarnation of nature with life and its rationalization by Homo sapiens-sapiens. It is the sentient being through which the universe is trying to acquire self-knowledge and self-realization. So, on the one hand, we are witnessing the undiscernible and insurmountable difficulties through which the White Crystal will eventually reach Mount Olympus in the hands of Zeus, and on the other, the easiness with which the Black Crystal will reach Othrys in the hands of Cronos. We are witnessing in fact, the conflict between the rational and the irrational and the transition of man to the logical. Man has fought hard during this transition. His mind was aflame for a series of thousands of years in his effort to address his difficult and inscrutable questions. At the end, he came out victorious, he moved on, but it was a futile victory, since he got carried away into metaphysical and supernatural escape routes. So, the metaphysical and illogical remains latent in his everyday reality and in every one of his thoughts, and emerges in every difficulty. Such titanic battles were fought inside the human mind.

Book In Our Own Image

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wesley J. Wildman
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-12-15
  • ISBN : 0192548050
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book In Our Own Image written by Wesley J. Wildman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Our Own Image is a work of comparative philosophical theology. It is a study of the roles anthropomorphism and apophaticism play in the construction of conceptual models of ultimate reality. Leading scholar Wesley J. Wildman considers whether we create our ideas of God. He offers a comparative analysis of three major classes of ultimacy models, paying particular attention to the way those classes are impacted by anthropomorphism while tracing their relative strengths and weaknesses. Wildman provides a constructive theological argument on behalf of an apophatic understanding of ultimate reality, showing how this understanding subsumes, challenges, and relates ultimacy models from the three classes being compared. He describes and compares competing ultimacy models, fairly and sympathetically. The conclusion is that all models cognitively break on the shoals of ultimate reality, but that the ground-of-being class of models carries us further than the others in regard to the comparative criteria that matter most.
