Book The Life and Thought of Filaret Drozdov 1782 1867

Download or read book The Life and Thought of Filaret Drozdov 1782 1867 written by Nicholas S. Racheotes and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life and Thought of Filaret Drozdov, 1782–1867: The Thorny Path to Sainthood is an intellectual biography of the foremost historical figure in the religious world of nineteenth-century Russia. The product of decades of archival research, most of which was in the Russian language, this is the first book-length study of St. Filaret in English. The volume is designed for specialists engaged in imperial Russian history, students in upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses, and for readers interested in Eastern Orthodox spirituality, and observers of the contemporary Russian scene who wish to understand traditional church/state relations. Deeply researched and including a formidable bibliographic component, the volume also serves as a reference guide to scholars desiring to study, at greater length, one of the many topics raised. Racheotes argues that Filaret was far more than a neo-patristic theologian steeped in the tradition of the Eastern fathers. He was simultaneously a valued monarchal apologist and a guardian of the privileges of the Russian Orthodox Church to the point of subtly resisting the state. By means of translation, select passages from sermons, letters, and official reports are available in English for the first time. Often preaching before three reigning tsars, writing or editing such monumental documents as Alexander I’s will and Alexander II’s decree emancipating the Russian serfs, leading the drive for a Russian translation of the Bible, and preparing Orthodox catechisms are but a few examples of St. Filaret’s historical importance. His centrality to policy formation with respect to the so called Old Believers, his incessant campaigns for clerical education reform, and for translation into Russian of the seminal works of Eastern theologians account for the enduring influence attributable to this Archbishop. Today, his pronouncements are enjoying a revival among a new generation of religious historians in Russia and are often adduced by a host of contemporaries arguing for Russian exceptionalism.

Book excerpt: How does architecture signify meaning? To answer this question, my comprehensive project greatly focused on the issues of symbolism and meaning that a building creates and communicates. A person's reading of the building, experience of the space and how a form can communicate meaning was some of the aspects and studies. The parameters that I established during my premise research then became a framework of the final design. The Slavic heritage of my family and many other families who live in and around Charlotte area is very rich in its historical, cultural and social aspects. Slavic nation is the most numerous ethnic and linguistic body of people in Europe. Today more than 30,000 Slavs live and work in and around Charlotte area. A culture center would bring them closer to each other not only to contemplate on the past but also to educate the new generation about the traditions and heritage of such a small yet 'powerful', powerful in terms of great, nation. Investigating diverse ways in which the Slavic people's identity could be interpreted, allowed for the development of a symbol that speaks through the building's whole. There are thirteen countries, subcultures that make up one big Slavic Culture. Every one of those countries has its own traditions, rituals, and values, yet they all linked and identified as Slavs. Slavic culture has many symbols, and one of the oldest one is, an Easter egg. Easter eggs embody a myriad of symbolism: the symbolism of the egg itself, the symbolism of design and the symbolism of design and the symbolism of color. The shell of the egg protects the yolk from leaking out. The yolk function on its own inside the shell. Taking this approach into the design of the culture center. The skin of the building wraps around the floor plates, the skin protects the inside from the outside with only one exception. When a shell has a crack the yolk starts to leak out. The only way to bring people inside of this giant metaphoric egg was to have a crack in the skin from the ground level up. From the urban point of view this created an interesting moment of pause for some perhaps for other it was then when the symbolic meaning of the building came alive and true. The crack would draw you into the building where you would experience the culture and the people as you proceed to the top. Not only does the building signify it also conveys meaning. Meaning holds things together, not letting them fall apart, just like thirteen identities is one whole. Throughout the project I came to a conclusion that not only thoughts have meaning, not only words have meaning, but buildings furthermore have meaning. Culture is a shared meaning and this meaning embraces not only significance but also value and purpose. 'Meaning' was used in my project as a foundation for a well-built contemplation and design of the structure. Just like culture is a shared meaning, the building is a shared place for all cultures, making the meaning, value and purpose of it in a symbolic way.
