Book Slave To The Wolf King

Download or read book Slave To The Wolf King written by Aimee Lynn Lane and published by StarNovel (HK) Co., Limited. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesse is a normal girl from a fucked-up family. The only thing she wants is freedom. Casimir, the dark and ruthless Wolf King, reigns in the underground dens of the wolf world with the power to compel anyone to do anything he commands. But he needs a new mate because the last two killed themselves. After watching Casimir steal the minds and wills of the other women kidnapped as potential mates, Jesse knows he is even more powerful than the urban legends she's heard. Fearing that she might lose herself forever, Jesse offers to submit to Casimir's dominance, make herself his slave, and bear his heir. But in return, he must vow never to use that compulsion on her. Fascinated by her boldness and the surge in his power when she offers herself, Casimir accepts her as his mate. But Casimir isn't the only wolf who wants Jesse. While Jesse cannot deny the sizzling chemistry between herself and Casimir, the King is emotionless and sometimes cruel. She's often drawn to the tender safety offered by a much less powerful wolf. A male Casimir would kill if he knew how deeply they connected. Will Casimir break Jesse just as he broke two mates before her? Will he discover her potentially deadly connection with another male? Or, will the smart and resourceful Jesse betray him and flee with the other wolf? Has the Wolf King finally met his match? *** "The position of Queen requires three things," I snapped impatiently. "First, the ability to bear heirs. Second, submission to me as King and Mate. And third, acceptance that I will not offer love." I stopped for a moment, "My Queen will receive anything material she wishes. But she will submit to me, and I will not bow. She will share my bed, my power, and my wealth... She will not share my heart." I waited, but none of them spoke. Good. I turned back to my servant to order them moved to the next challenge when a quiet but strong voice rose behind me. "Are you violent?" I turned back to the fire-haired woman with a flat smile. "Show me a wolf who isn't. And I am the King of the others. What do you think?" Her throat bobbed. The tear in the neckline of her cotton shirt offered a fleeting glimpse of plump cleavage. My cock twitched. "I meant with your Queen... um, Sire," she said uncertainly. "You said you have to dominate, that she has to submit. What is she submitting to?" I smirked. "I don't make a habit of leaving bruises," I said, letting a dark promise seep into my tone. "But they've been known to happen." It was quite thrilling when she paled. I once again turned away, gesturing to my man to start moving them when her voice rose one more time. "I'll volunteer," she said. When I whirled, she licked her lips then stepped forward. "I will be your mate... if you'll have me." Hiding my shock, I offered my most predatory grin to the poor, naive idiot. "My mate, like everyone else in this kingdom, is my slave. Now... are you certain?"

Sample the passion that waits inside: His black eyes sparkled again as the sun rose high enough to crest the city walls. The lines of Shingo’s cheeks stunned me for a moment. I paid no attention to the words he said or the blush creeping up my throat. Then it dawned on me that he said something about the parade. “It was bad, but I took myself out of it. I forced myself to look at faces in the crowd and not think about what was happening to me.” Shingo raised his hand and put it on the back of mine. That time I didn’t jump. “How does the girl do it? So much sadness and crying and yelling here; there is so much pain and terror. How do you not weep for what you have lost?” His hand warmed mine. It sent little tingles down my wrist to my elbow, then to my shoulder and down my side. “And why is she not afraid of me? How does she keep smiling?” I blushed again when he spoke, but it was the sort that’s deep inside. My skin felt warm when he touched my hand, but his words warmed me from the inside out. It took me a second to collect myself enough to respond. “I don’t know that I’m doing anything special,” I finally managed. “I’m just getting by however I can. It’s not like I want to be here, but my father, he needed...” “A girl sold herself to a king out of love for her father?” “Yes, that’s it, more or less.” He stroked my hand with his fingertips, then gathered both of my hands in one of his, and pressed the whole bundle to my chest. Just like before, he radiated heat that sent curls of energy out from where our bodies met. “Shingo!” A cry came from off to the east, from one of the guards atop the wall. “What are you doing? If you’re going to take her, do it and get on with your work. One of Morzan’s purchases tried to escape and hurt herself somehow. Come set this wound!” “Ah. Quite sorry little princess.” “Princess?” “Oh, not princess? Thought auctioneer said girl was a princess.” “No,” I giggled. “Most certainly not. Just the daughter of a lowly lord without enough money to buy crops for the next year.” He nodded a grave, serious nod. “You are a special girl. Shingo will see you again.” “When? I mean – do you work for Morzan?” “Ha! Does Shingo work for Morzan, she asks.” “Well?” “Shingo and Morzan are very close. He trusts me to do things he trusts no one else to do. I will see you again. Shingo will be in Zor after the snowy season breaks.” “But I thought Zor was a winter kingdom? I thought it snowed all the time there?” “No. Well, yes. For a part of the year, it snows a little less. Zoran call that time of year summer.” “Oh,” I said. “Is that when the sun shines?” “Yes, yes, every day the sun shines. For at least an hour.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In this engaging work, Van Atta . . . provides an in-depth analysis of the 1820 Missouri Compromise, a seminal event on the road to the Civil War.” —Choice In Wolf by the Ears, John R. Van Atta discusses how the question of slavery surfaced in the divisive fight over Missouri statehood. As Thomas Jefferson wrote at the time, a nation dealing with the politically implacable issue of slavery essentially held the “wolf” by the ears—and could neither let go nor hang on forever. The first organized Louisiana Purchase territory to lie completely west of the Mississippi River and northwest of the Ohio, Missouri carried special significance for both pro- and anti-slavery advocates. Northern congressmen leaped out of their seats to object to the proposed expansion of the slave “empire,” while slave-state politicians voiced outrage at the northerners’ blatant sectional attack. Although the Missouri confrontation ultimately appeared to end amicably with a famous compromise that the wily Kentuckian Henry Clay helped to cobble together, the passions it unleashed proved vicious, widespread, and long lasting. Van Atta deftly explains how the Missouri crisis revealed the power that slavery had already gained over American nation building. He explores the external social, cultural, and economic forces that gave the confrontation such urgency around the country, as well as the beliefs, assumptions, and fears that characterized both sides of the slavery argument. Wolf by the Ears provides students in American history with an ideal introduction to the Missouri crisis while at the same time offering fresh insights for scholars of the early republic. “Van Atta has written the clearest narrative of the Missouri crisis to date.” —Louisiana History

Book excerpt: A novel of exhilarating range, magical realism, and history—a dazzling retelling of Liberia’s formation Wayétu Moore’s powerful debut novel, She Would Be King, reimagines the dramatic story of Liberia’s early years through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Gbessa, exiled from the West African village of Lai, is starved, bitten by a viper, and left for dead, but still she survives. June Dey, raised on a plantation in Virginia, hides his unusual strength until a confrontation with the overseer forces him to flee. Norman Aragon, the child of a white British colonizer and a Maroon slave from Jamaica, can fade from sight when the earth calls him. When the three meet in the settlement of Monrovia, their gifts help them salvage the tense relationship between the African American settlers and the indigenous tribes, as a new nation forms around them. Moore’s intermingling of history and magical realism finds voice not just in these three characters but also in the fleeting spirit of the wind, who embodies an ancient wisdom. “If she was not a woman,” the wind says of Gbessa, “she would be king.” In this vibrant story of the African diaspora, Moore, a talented storyteller and a daring writer, illuminates with radiant and exacting prose the tumultuous roots of a country inextricably bound to the United States. She Would Be King is a novel of profound depth set against a vast canvas and a transcendent debut from a major new author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wolf King explores how political power was conceptualized, constructed, and wielded in twelfth-century al-Andalus, focusing on the eventful reign of Muhammad ibn Sad ibn Ahmad ibn Mardanīsh (r. 1147–1172). Celebrated in Castilian and Latin sources as el rey lobo/rex lupus and denigrated by Almohad and later Arabic sources as irreligious and disloyal to fellow Muslims because he fought the Almohads and served as vassal to the Castilians, Ibn Mardanīsh ruled a kingdom that at its peak constituted nearly half of al-Andalus and served as an important buffer between the Almohads and the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. Through a close examination of contemporary sources across the region, Abigail Krasner Balbale shows that Ibn Mardanīsh's short-lived dynasty was actually an attempt to integrate al-Andalus more closely with the Islamic East—particularly the Abbasid caliphate. At stake in his battles against the Almohads was the very idea of the caliphate in this period, as well as who could define righteous religious authority. The Wolf King makes effective use of chronicles, chancery documents, poetry, architecture, coinage, and artifacts to uncover how Ibn Mardanīsh adapted language and cultural forms from around the Islamic world to assert and consolidate power—and then tracks how these strategies, and the memory of Ibn Mardanīsh more generally, influenced expressions of kingship in subsequent periods.
