Book excerpt: Anne Tucker is a fifty-five-year-old educator-turned-writer who lives in Turner Falls, Maine. When Crown Press selects her novel for publication, she develops a rich, intense relationship with her editor, Emily Ryder. Father Dennis McManus frequently finds himself at odds with his superiors due to his strong views on abortion and gay rights. After he and Sister Carol Robinson hold a rally supporting same-sex marriage, their bishop pressures them to abandon their beliefs or leave the Church. The lives of these characters intersect when a priest confesses to Dennis that he has molested a young boy. Dennis refuses to hold his disclosure in confidence, and all hell breaks loose in the diocese and beyond. As Anne, Emily, Dennis, and Carol search for the identity of the abused child, the middle-aged "detectives" must confront the minefield of their beliefs . . . and their feelings. "Unveiled" is a story of struggle, advocacy, courage, and-most of all-the healing power of love.

Book Assessing the Effectiveness of Virtual Technologies in Foreign and Second Language Instruction

Download or read book Assessing the Effectiveness of Virtual Technologies in Foreign and Second Language Instruction written by Kruk, Mariusz and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, the use of virtual technologies in education, including foreign/second language instruction, has developed into a substantial field of study. Through virtual technologies, language learners can develop metacognitive and metalinguistic skills, and they can practice the language by interacting with real/virtual users or virtual objects, a very important issue for language learners who have no or little contact with native or target language speakers outside the classroom. Assessing the Effectiveness of Virtual Technologies in Foreign and Second Language Instruction provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of virtual technologies and applications in engaging language learners both within and outside the classroom. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as game-based learning, online classrooms, and learning management systems, this publication is ideally designed for academicians, researchers, scholars, educators, graduate-level students, software developers, instructional designers, linguists, and education administrators seeking current research on how virtual technologies can be utilized and interpreted methodologically in virtual classroom settings.

Book Educating For Empathy Service Learning In Public Policy Education

Download or read book Educating For Empathy Service Learning In Public Policy Education written by Woo Jun Jie and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Service learning presents an experiential learning opportunity, particularly for students at higher education institutions. At the same time, it allows the university to engage communities and apply its considerable resources addressing community needs. This book, Educating for Empathy: Service Learning in Public Policy Education, will introduce readers to the concept of service learning and how it can be applied to higher education. While service learning has been recognized as a useful pedagogical tool that can enhance students' learning experience, the application and practice of service learning in Singapore has been limited. The book will also provide a broad overview of service learning in the context of a service learning initiative that was conducted by the author under Nanyang Technological University (NTU)'s Public Policy & Global Affairs Programme, as well as the author's experience as NTU's inaugural Community Research Fellow. It will cover the policy, pedagogical, and socio-political aspects of service learning and include insights from students and stakeholders. In doing so, it aims to provide valuable insights into the role of service learning as a driver of civic education and grassroots volunteerism. The book will also provide both education and policy professionals a greater understanding of how their work can intersect, and provide students with a highly rewarding learning experience.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Learning and Cognition

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Learning and Cognition written by Marc Marschark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the intersection of cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and neuroscience with regard to deaf individuals has received increasing attention from a variety of academic and educational audiences. Both research and pedagogy have addressed questions about whether deaf children learn in the same ways that hearing children learn, how signed languages and spoken languages might affect different aspects of cognition and cognitive development, and the ways in which hearing loss influences how the brain processes and retains information. There are now a number of preliminary answers to these questions, but there has been no single forum in which research into learning and cognition is brought together. The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Learning and Cognition aims to provide this shared forum, focusing exclusively on learning, cognition, and cognitive development from theoretical, psychological, biological, linguistic, social-emotional, and educational perspectives. Each chapter includes state-of-the-art research conducted and reviewed by international experts in the area. Drawing this research together, this volume allows for a synergy of ideas that possesses the potential to move research, theory, and practice forward.
