Book Identification of Variables Influencing Residual Stand Damage from Skyline Thinning a Young Western Hemlock Sitka Spruce Stand

Download or read book Identification of Variables Influencing Residual Stand Damage from Skyline Thinning a Young Western Hemlock Sitka Spruce Stand written by Michael A. Hargrave and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western hemlock and Sitka spruce are relatively thin- barked species and susceptible to damage during thinning operations. Damage to the wood allows decay-causing fungi to enter resulting in loss of merchantable volume at the time of final harvest. Cable yarding systems are needed for much of the thinning because most hemlock-spruce stands in the Pacific Northwest are located on steep slopes and fragile soils. It is during these thinning operations that much of the damage occurs. The purpose of this study was to determine the significant harvesting variables affecting residual stand damage due to cable thinning a 30-year-old hemlock -spruce stand. Detailed stand damage measurements were made during logging on nine skyline units in two study areas in western Oregon. Less detailed damage was measured on 18 other units to determine differences in damage levels between three different thinning treatments: conventional low intensity thinning, conventional high intensity thinning, and a herringlone (strip) thinning. Twenty-two variables were measured in two categories: harvesting variables and stand damage variables. Total scar area per turn (ft2/turn) was used as the dependent variable. As a result of regression analysis, the following variables were found to most significantly influence residual stand damage: number of carriage repositions, log. angle, carriage clearance., narrow treatment, rigging slinger, and cutter. An analysis of variance showed mean scar area per acre for the narrow and wide treatments were significantly different from the strip treatment. Only 12 percent of the residual stand (trees/acre) in the strip treatment were damaged. The narrow and wide treatments experienced much higher levels of 47 and 61 percent, respectively. Conventional thinning treatments experienced extensive damage levels (84.78 ft2/acre in the narrow treatment and 91.64 ft2/acre in the wide treatment) compared to the strip treatment (17.57 ft2/acre). Individual scars ranged in size from 0.02 to 14.00 square feet. Of the total scar area in the detailed units, 66.6 oercent was found within 20 feet of the skyline corridor centerline.

Book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce written by N. Merle Peterson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitka spruce, the largest of the world's spruces, is an important component of British Columbia's coastal forests. Its ecology gives it a special place in the sustainable management of the province's forests. However, in west coast forestry it is poorly known in comparison with its main coniferous companions -- Douglas-fir, western redcedar, and western hemlock. As an important international forestry resource, it is crucial that Sitka spruce -- its ecology and the ecosystems in which it occurs -- be clearly understood by those who are involved with its management. This book is the most recent major work on the ecology and management of Sitka spruce. The authors describe how this fascinating tree reproduces, grows, and functions in its natural geographic range. They discuss both the ecology of Sitka spruce and silvicultural questions such as original plantation spacing, juvenile spacing, and fertilization to accelerate the harvestability of second-growth coastal spruce stands. Sitka spruce derives its importance not only from its prominence as an international transportable genetic resource but also from its role in riparian systems and its biodiversity values. Here in North America's west coast rainforest, this magnificent tree illustrates the ecology of complex forest ecosystems and their cultural, wilderness, historic, and economic values.

Book Regional Silviculture of the United States

Download or read book Regional Silviculture of the United States written by John W. Barrett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995-02-28 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable working resource for professionals. An excellent text for advanced forestry students . . . This unique book provides students and professionals with a broad-based knowledge of contemporary silviculture theory and practice.Throughout, the authors emphasize fundamental questions of edaphic, physiographic, and climatic site factors, as well as ecologicalrelationships and silvical characteristics of major tree species.Updated and expanded to reflect the many scientific, socioeconomic, and public policy trends that have had a profound impact onsilviculture over the past decade, this Third Edition of RegionalSilviculture of the United States: * Brings together the knowledge and expertise of fourteen leadingexperts from around the nation * Provides a rational framework with which to critically assessforest data and to develop innovative silvicultural solutions * Features region-by-region coverage of the eleven major foresttypes in the continental U.S. and Alaska * Offers a detailed look at practices that promote a wide range offorest resources--from wood production and outdoor recreation, towildlife habitat and range forage production * Now includes more in-depth coverage of such crucial themes asbiodiversity, endangered species, habitat fragmentation, foresthealth, landscape management, neotropical migrants, and more "...silviculture is not reducible to a series of rules; it must beflexible and adaptable to a variety of conditions. Much of it is anart as well as a synthesis of ecology and economics. There is nosingle best answer to how a stand should be managed. Andinstitutional and societal constraints must be considered." --fromthe Preface by John W. Barrett Regional Silviculture of the United States, Third Edition is not a"cookbook,"offering pat recipes for solving "typical" silviculturalproblems. Instead, it arms those responsible for the developmentand care of forests with something far more valuable--a rationalframework for the analysis of forest data and the development ofinnovative solutions tailored to specific forest types and theshifting politicoeconomic constraints under which silviculturalistsmust work. One way in which this book achieves that goal is by providingreaders with a broad-based knowledge of contemporary silviculturetheory and practice. In chapters organized according to the elevenmajor forest regions of the continental U.S., fourteen recognizedexperts from around the nation--each of them a specialist in aparticular region of operation--offer their valuable insights andobservations on silviculture in general and on varioussilvicultural practices with which they are familiar. Throughout, the authors are attentive to fundamental considerations of edaphic, physiographic, and climatic site factors, as well as ecologicalrelationships and silvical characteristics of major treespecies. This Third Edition of John W. Barrett's classic has been revisedand expanded to encompass a number of important themes which haverisen to prominence within silviculture over the past decade, including biodiversity, endangered species, habitat fragmentation, forest health, landscape management, and neotropicalmigrants. Timely, authoritative, and comprehensive in scope, RegionalSilviculture of the United States, Third Edition is a valuableresource for foresters, forestry students, ecologists, environmental scientists, and all those concerned with development, management, and preservation of our most valuable nationaltreasure.
