Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms is the catalog for the first comprehensive traveling exhibition devoted to Norman Rockwell's iconic depictions of FDR's Four Freedoms. Enduring Ideals illuminates both the historic context in which FDR articulated the Four Freedoms—Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear—and the role of Rockwell’s paintings in bringing them to life for millions of people, rallying the public behind the War effort and changing the tenor of the times. In telling the story of how Rockwell’s works were transformed from a series of paintings into a national movement, the exhibition also demonstrates the power of illustration to communicate ideas and inspire change. In addition to his celebrated paintings of the Four Freedoms, the exhibition brings together numerous other examples of painting, illustration, and more, by both Rockwell and a broad range of his contemporaries—from J.C. Leyendecker and Mead Schaeffer, to Ben Shahn, Dorothea Lange, and Gordon Parks, among others—as well as historical documents, photographs, videos, and artifacts; interactive digital displays; and immersive settings. While exploring the response of an earlier generation to the plea for defense of universal freedoms, the exhibition also resonates with our own time. The catalogue features essays by exhibition co-curators Stephanie Haboush Plunkett and James Kimble, by Laurie Norton Moffat, Director of the Norman Rockwell Museum, and by other contributors, including activist Ruby Bridges, artist and granddaughter of Norman Rockwell, Daisy Rockwell, and Ambassador William Vanden Heuvel.

After thiry years of making a home for her husband and their two sons, she felt frustrated in her role as live-in-maid and asked her husband for time off with pay! With a back-pack and only fifteen hundred dollars, she traveled fifty thousand miles alone around the world. Stranded in Iran, received by Indira Ghandi in India, she spent the night in a mud hut just a few miles from cannibal country in Papua-New Guinea. Granted an audience with the King of Tonga and trading her clothes for lodgings on Easter Island were some of hte experiences that enabled her to rediscover new strengths and potential long since dormant in a marriage grown stale. But the adjustments the new liberated Sabina and her husband had to make upon her return home six months later, (and thirty pounds thinner) proved to be the most difficult part of her "sabbatical". Ultimately their marriage becomes richer and stronger than either could have imagined. A Marriage Sabbatical is a fascinating and inspirational account of a middle-aged woman's extraordinary, lone, global odyssey in search of herself, told with warmth, candor, and good humor.

Book The Poltergeist Prince of London

Download or read book The Poltergeist Prince of London written by James Clark and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It began with a key. One afternoon in 1956, in the home of the Hitchings family in Battersea, south London, a small silver key appeared on Shirley Hitchings' bed. This seemingly insignificant event heralded the beginning of one of the most terrifying, incredible and mysterious hauntings in British history. The spirit, who quickly became known as 'Donald', began to communicate, initially via tapping sounds, but over time - and with the encouragement of psychical researcher Harold Chibbett, whose case-files appear here – by learning to write. Soon, the spirit had begun to make simply incredible claims about his identity, insisting that he was one of the most famous figures in world history – but what was the truth? Here, for the first time, is the full story, told by the woman right at the heart of it all – Shirley herself.

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

Download or read book Hollywood Online written by Ian London and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood Online provides a historical account of motion picture websites from 1993 to 2008 and their marketing function as industrial advertisements for video and other media in the digital age. The Blair Witch Project is the most important example of online film promotion in cinema history. Over the last thirty years only a small number of major and independent distributors have converted internet-created buzz into box-office revenues with similar levels of success. Yet readings of how the film's internet campaign broke new ground in the summer of 1999 tend to minimize, overlook or ignore the significance of other online film promotions. Similarly, claims that Blair initiated a cycle of imitators have been repeated in film publications and academic studies for more than two decades. This book challenges three major narratives in studies about online film marketing: Hollywood's major studios and independents had no significant relationship to the internet in the 1990s; online film promotions only took off after 1999 because of Blair; and Hollywood cashed-in by initiating a cycle of imitators and scaling up corporate activities online. Hollywood Online tests these assumptions by exploring internet marketing up to and including the film's success online (Pre-Blair, 1993-9), then by examining the period immediately after Blair (Post-Blair, 2000-8) which broadly coincides with the rise and decline of DVD, as well as the emergence of the social media sites MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.
