Book excerpt: Book & DVD. With the successful repair of the Skylab workshop by Pete Conrads Skylab 2 crew the stage was now set for his fellow Apollo 12 moon walker Alan Bean to lead a full scientific mission to the giant space station. Bean was to be accompanied by two of the next generation of astronauts, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma. The crew were launched on a Saturn IB on 28 July 1973 for a mission which would last for just short of two months. This would be by far the longest duration mission ever attempted by the United States. Just as the previous mission had required space walks, Skylab 3 would also see the crew venture outside on three separate occasions. The experience gained from these early repair missions would be of incalculable value to the future of manned space exploration. Having secured the station and completed the repairs begun by Conrads crew, Bean, Lousma and Garriott conducted an intensive series of experiments on themselves and on behalf of students back on Earth. They also began the serious study of our home planet through the Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package and undertook meaningful studies of the Sun using the Apollo Telescope Mount. Many of the paradigms for life aboard the International Space Station began right here with the flight of Skylab 3. Monitoring the crews reaction to long duration exposure to micro-gravity, watching the effect on small organisms, carefully studying the earths ecosphere, looking out into deep space with the benefit of clear skies and generally learning whether humanity could withstand the rigors of long missions away from the Earth. In this book you will discover everything from the minutiae of complex experiments to the human face of some of the earliest true space residents. Once again the enormous Skylab workshop would provide them with a home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between May 1973 and February 1974 three teams of astronauts increased the American space endurance record from 14 days, set in 1965, to three months aboard the Skylab space station in missions lasting 28, 59 and 84 days. American astronauts did not surpass these records for over 20 years until the NASA Mir missions began in 1995. In "Skylab - America's space station", David Shayler chronicles the evolution of the station, its infrastructure on the ground including astronaut training, each of the three manned missions, summary of results, achievements and the lessons learned. The creation of the International Space Station is the real legacy of Skylab as American astronauts once again embark on extended missions around the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Bronze Medal for Science in the 2016 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards In this companion volume to John Bisney and J. L. Pickering’s extraordinary book of rare photographs from the Mercury and Gemini missions, the authors now present the rest of the Golden Age of US manned space flight with a photographic history of Project Apollo. Beginning in 1967, Moonshots and Snapshots of Project Apollo chronicles the program’s twelve missions and its two follow-ons, Skylab and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. The authors draw from rarely seen NASA, industry, and news media images, taking readers to the Moon, on months-long odysseys above Earth, and finally on the first international manned space flight in 1975. The book pairs many previously unpublished images from Pickering’s unmatched collection of Cold War–era space photographs with extended captions—identifying many NASA, military, and contract workers and participants for the first time—to provide comprehensive background information about the exciting climax and conclusion of the Space Race.

Book Spacecraft

Download or read book Spacecraft written by Michael H. Gorn and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spacecraft takes a long look at humankind's attempts and advances in leaving Earth through incredible illustrations and authoritatively written profiles on Sputnik, the International Space Station, and beyond. In 1957, the world looked on with both uncertainty and amazement as the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first man-made orbiter. Sputnik 1 would spend three months circling Earth every 98 minutes and covering 71 million miles in the process. The world’s space programs have traveled far (literally and figuratively) since then, and the spacecraft they have developed and deployed represent almost unthinkable advances for such a relatively short period. This ambitiously illustrated aerospace history profiles and depicts spacecraft fromSputnik 1 through the International Space Station, andeverything in between, including concepts that have yet to actually venture outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Illustrator and aerospace professional Giuseppe De Chiara teams up with aerospace historian Michael Gorn to present a huge, profusely illustrated, and authoritatively written collection of profiles depicting and describing the design, development, and deployment of these manned and unmanned spacecraft. Satellites, capsules, spaceplanes, rockets, and space stations are illustrated in multiple-view, sometimes cross-section, and in many cases shown in archival period photography to provide further historical context. Dividing the book by era, De Chiara and Gorn feature spacecraft not only from the United States and Soviet Union/Russia, but also from the European Space Agency and China. The marvels examined in this volume include the rockets Energia, Falcon 9, and VEGA; the Hubble Space Telescope; the Cassini space probe; and the Mars rovers, Opportunity and Curiosity. Authoritatively written and profusely illustrated with more than 200 stunning artworks, Spacecraft: 100 Iconic Rockets, Shuttles, and Satellites That Put Us in Space is sure to become a definitive guide to the history of manned space exploration.
