Excerpt: ...indomitable Roman who said, Viam aut veniam aut faciam--" I will either find a way, or make a way." These will think that Elder Emmons ought to have found a Christian church or built up one; but they must not charge him too hastily with unfaithfulness. His fault seems to have been, chiefly, lack of energy--" the very head and front of his offending hath this extent, no more." That he has not denied the faith is clearly established by indubitable testimony. In a letter to J. M. Mathes, he himself says, "In uniting as I did with the First Baptist church in Boston, in 1843, J renounced no Reformation principle that I ever held." The pastor of that church, Dr. Neale, says of him: "His reception into my church was owing to my knowledge of his character as a Christian, and not to any sympathy with the peculiar speculative notions in which it was somewhat natural for him to indulge." "For these 'peculiar notions, ' and 'theological speculations' "--says Elder E. in his letter to Elder Mathes--" or for the faith and teaching contained in them, has my name been cast out as evil. I have been looked upon as a speckled bird, having had no call, and no pastoral charge in any Baptist church since 1830. So, for my Reformation principles--nicknamed 'Campbellism'--for their avowal and advocacy, I have been, still am, and expect to be a living martyr." He acknowledges no creed but the Bible; preaches no baptism but that "for the remission of sins;" employs his pen in support of no faith but that "once delivered to the saints;" and wherever in his travels he meets with a congregation of Disciples, with them he fraternizes, advocating their cause. At the age of eight, his father and mother split up. He grew up under his mother’s care. He attended college and received a Master’s Degree in Botany and Zoology from Fort Hays Kansas State University. He attended the University of Kansas where in 1960 a book he wrote was published by the Kansas State Biological Survey, entitled “Beaver in Kansas”. From 1961-1968, he worked as a Field Biologist for the state wildlife agency in South Dakota. During that time he wrote several articles in scientific journals, the most important being the results of the first study of Black-footed Ferrets in the wild, this animal is one of the rarest mammals in North America. In a research study he trapped and banded more than 10 thousand sharp-tailed grouse. More grouse that has ever been studied before. And during the study found a new method of determining the sex of these grouse. From June of 1968 until 1996 he was promoted from Assistant Professor to Professor at Kansas State University, where he received many awards for his work as Extension Specialist in helping people cope with conflicts involving wild animals. He became recognized as a national expert in preventing coyote damage to livestock. Many agencies and groups have honored him for his work. Among these awards include: Meritorious Service USDA Award for Outstanding Extension Work; USDA and Kansas State University Awards for Extraordinary Leadership in Kansas, the Great Plains and nationally for the development of educational programs; and the Great Plains Agriculture Council’s Outstanding Service Award in 1993. F. Robert Henderson did not accomplish these things without a lot of help and understanding and encouragement. F. Robert is grateful for the exceptional support of Karen, his wife and children, Tammy and Todd as well as numerous farmers, ranchers, hunters, colleagues and research associates. As a diversion from the stress of his work, in 1978, F. Robert Henderson began to study his roots, especially on the Henderson side of his family. At that time his late father, Frank Paul Henderson did not know who his second great grandfather was, or even, much about family history from that time back. Together, F. Robert Henderson and his father worked together to gather facts about their ancestors. This book is a result of that study.

"Between 1841 and 1846, Birdseye expressed his views and observations in letters to Gerrit Smith, a prominent New York reformer who arranged to have many of them published in antislavery newspapers such as the Emancipator and Friend of Man." "Those letters, reproduced in this book, drew on Birdseye's extensive conversations with slaveholders, nonslaveholders, and the slaves themselves. He found that East Tennesseans, on the whole, were antislavery in sentiment, susceptible to rational abolitionist appeal, and generally far more lenient toward individual slaves than were other southerners. Opposed to slavery on economic as well as moral grounds, Birdseye sought to establish a free labor colony in East Tennessee in the early 1840s and actively supported the region's abortive effort in 1842 to separate itself from the rest of the state."--[book jacket].
