Excerpt: ... between the congregations of the two Synods, which has continued more or less to the present day. This revival, which commenced about the year 1791, continued for some years in the upper part of what is now Orange Presbytery. Many professors of religion renounced their hopes and became, as they thought, truly converted to God; others were greatly enlivened and strengthened in their faith, and rejoiced in renewed graces; and many hopeful converts were added to the church. This was the Second Revival Of Religion in North Carolina, after the Revolutionary war, of any extent, of which any account or tradition has been preserved; the First having been in Iredell. Mr. Currie relates the interesting fact, that in the year 1801, in the month of March, at Barbacue church in Cumberland county, five young men, Messrs. Brown, Murphy, McMillan, McNair, Shaw, Matthews, together with himself, were licensed to preach the gospel by Jrange Presbytery. All had received part of their education at Caldwell's school, in Guilford; and some, the whole. Part of them had grown up there, and been more or less under the influence of McGready. Of these, Matthews and Brown have received the degree of D.D. from respectable colleges. This revival was attended with no unusual appearances or exercises. The opposition to the close and practical preaching and renewed discipline never broke out into violence but in one case. At Stony Creek there were some families of wealth and influence, that had become loose in their religious habits and morals during this disturbance of the war and the presence of the armies; these opposed Mr. McGready's course and preaching, and proceeded from one step of opposition to another, till their dislike exceeded all bounds. Book Pictorial History of the Episcopal Church in North Carolina 1701 1964 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pictorial History of the Episcopal Church in North Carolina 1701 1964 Classic Reprint written by Norvin Cornelius Duncan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Episcopal Church in North Carolina, 1701-1964 Some time ago I began collecting pictures of Church buildings, clergy, laymen and lay women, together with historical sketches of parishes and missions throughout the state of North Carolina. My purpose was to tell, in pictures and short sketches, the story of the Episcopal Church in' North Carolina. Letters were sent to some two hundred and fifty clergymen, most of whom turned my letter over to laymen and lay women in their parishes. The laity responded gratifyingly, and what appears here will be some small measure of the tribute due to the men and women, who in difficult times, and at great sacrifice, kept the Church alive and laid foundations for future growth. Not all of the people, parishes, and mis sions appear here which deserve to be included, due to the inability to secure responses, and also to the fact of limited space. But those who do appear stand as representative of the others. The sketches which do appear are made much shorter than originally intended. After I began the col lection, I learned of the fact that committees from the three Dioceses have been appointed to write a full history of the Church in North Carolina, and I do not wish to trespass upon their endeavors. The sketches which do appear are designed for background for the pictures. This part of the story is being told from the in side. I have had the privilege of spending most of my ministry in North Carolina, and my contacts and experiences have brought me into associations of an endearing sort with men and women whose loyalty and devotion to the Church have been mat ters of deep inspiration and appreciation. To write a'full story of these devoted men and women, who endured sufferings, were patient in tribulation, and noble in their sacrifices, it would be necessary to sketch the background against which they labored, but this I will leave to the his torians. We do have the picture of the Church, being -a part of the Anglican Communion, seeking to plant itself in America, with all of its' relation ships and entanglements with the English Church and state. In doing so, the Established Church came into Violent conflict with new ideas and new forms of government, both in Church and state.
