Book A Sketch of Chinese History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Sketch of Chinese History Classic Reprint written by F. L. Hawks Pott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of Chinese History The present volume is written to meet a practical need. The author has long felt in his work as a teacher the want of a short history of China. Of larger histories, and of monographs treating fully of some one period, there is no lack, but a concise outline of Chinese history accenting the turning points in the life of the nation has not yet been produced. To reduce the voluminous native histories of China to a small compass is undoubtedly an ambitious undertaking, but yet it is a task that someone must attempt. The average student has not the time nor the inclination to wade through the cumbrous volumes which exist at present, and when he ventures to do so, he often becomes discouraged because of the impossibility of remembering the strange and difficult names of the persons and places with which the pages are crowded, and so perhaps lays down the book without having gained any very clear impression of the history as a whole. It is hoped that this brief survey of the entire field may be of service in making it easier for the reader to fix in his mind the salient points of the long story. In the spelling of the names of persons we have followed as far as possible one system throughout, namely, that of Professor Giles of Cambridge University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From China and Some Eastern Sketches The aim of "Letters from China" is to convey an impression of life in the Far East as it appeared to an individual for whom the serious side of any subject has never possessed so powerful an attraction as has its humorous aspect. I offer this explanation in the hope that it may be regarded, by indulgent readers, as a plea in extenuation of the book's many faults. The stories are mainly incidents within the actual experience of the writer, who has attempted to portray them in their own Oriental colouring rather than by means of precisive literary expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Art A few words on the writing and pronunciation of Chinese words, addressed to novices in Sinology, may not be out of place here. The Chinese language, it need hardly be said, is monosyllabic, and each word is represented by a separate character in the written script. These characters were originally pictures of natural objects or ideas, used singly or in combination, and it was not until later that they were distinguished into two categories, as phonetics, and determinatives or radicals. The radicals in modern use are 214, a number arbitrarily fined for dictionary purposes, as a means of classifying the or more written characters of the language, and of providing a ready means of coining new combinations. The large majority of characters of the modern script are composed of a radical, which gives a clue to the meaning by indicating the particular class of things or ideas to which the combination of which it forms a part belongs, and a phonetic, which conveys some idea of the sound.
