Book Simple Love and Occasional Pieces in Verse

Download or read book Simple Love and Occasional Pieces in Verse written by F. Claiborne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Love and Occasional Pieces in Verse: With a Notice of Audubon In an age so practical, when polite literature, and poetry especially, are at fault, the question may be fairly stated, to what uses may the poet be put. His function may be purely negative. It has occurred to me, however, that surely there must be something in the man so singled out as to be made, at times, the butt of folly and the target of the giddy. Following up on his decay there likewise comes the enquiry, has not the last poet gone; is not his harp unstrung; is his a vanished hand. Book The Westminster Problems Book

Download or read book The Westminster Problems Book written by N. G. Royde Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Westminster Problems Book: Prose and Verse This book consists of work contributed to the Problems and Prizes page of The Saturday Westminster Gazette from February 1904 till the end of 1907. It does not include any of the Greek and Latin versions which have been published separately, and verse and prose translations from French and German have been omitted as not of general interest. A great deal of the work which won Prizes on page 6 was of an ephemeral or purely topical nature and therefore not suitable for reproduction here, and readers who have followed the competitions will, on that account, miss several familiar names from these pages. Occasionally an entry which won a Prize has been suppressed in favour of some other piece which, though at the time it did not fulfil the conditions set, has worn better, and is included here on its own merits. It has been very difficult to ascertain the authorship of a large number of essays and poems, which were either sent anonymously or else printed without signatures in the reports. I have done my best to give credit for every work to which my competitors have laid claim, and must trust to them to rectify for their own immediate public any errors or omissions they may discover in the index. Book Sketches in History and Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches in History and Poetry Classic Reprint written by John Campbell Shairp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in History and Poetry Of the ten papers, which have been named Sketches, contained in this volume, some were given to the public in periodicals by the author himself. Others are now printed for the first time. The date of the earliest is 1860; of the latest 1884, the year before the authors death. Four of them were given as Lectures in the chair of Poetry, Oxford, viz., VI., VII., IX., X. All the subjects, save one, are taken from Scottish History or Poetry, fields in which the writer showed a lifelong and special interest. One or two of the papers may be singled out as but slight in treatment of the subject; yet all of them contain passages which are highly characteristic of the author, and some are worthy of him at his best - as, for example, "The Songs of Scotland before Burns." They thus seem to me to be well deserving of collection and publication in one volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sketches From Life in Town and Country

Download or read book Sketches From Life in Town and Country written by Edward Carpenter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches From Life in Town and Country: And Some Verses Townsfolk get their facial muscles pretty well exercised; they have to twitch some sort of greeting to their fellow-cits a hundred times a day. In country people the muscles of expression, from disuse, cease to act, or never get developed at all. Their faces acquire a stolid impervious look, and the town-dweller gets downright mad when, after letting off his best jokes and saying the most surprising things he can think of, the country-man still regards him with unchanged impassive eye, as though he were a cow or a tree. He goes off, spluttering contempt on the rustic's head. But Hodge is not always such a fool as he looks. I have often been amused by the remarks passed when the man of words was gone. "He seems in a mighty hurry, he do." "Well, dun you see, he's got such a lot to say, he's bound to let it out somehow." Book Some Scraps of Verse and Prose by Dante Gabriel Rossetti Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Scraps of Verse and Prose by Dante Gabriel Rossetti Classic Reprint written by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Scraps of Verse and Prose by Dante Gabriel Rossetti In this general view my brother was, I think, not far from agreeing with myself: in the case of such poets as Coleridge, Shelley, or Keats, he would - for the purposes of any edition affecting to be complete - have put in every thing he could lay his hands upon, although he would always have preferred, for his own reading, a compendium of the masterpieces. But, as regards himself individually, personal sensitivene'ss gave him' a different bias. He de tested the very idea that some of his boyish crudities (such as Sir Hug/t t/ze Heron, for which ingenuous persons are willing to give some ten times the price of his Collected Works) should ever be brought forward. I therefore, in compiling the Collected Worles, excluded all such crudities; and to this day I would not publish, even in a casual and. Scattered form, those writings of his which I believe he would have considered essentially poor or bad. But there are some other things, of minor importance or completeness - sometimes intentionally jocular - which appear to me considerably removed from being bad or poor, and which he himself would probably have thought admis sible for eventual printing, though not for publication dur ing his lifetime, or as a portion of his solid literary life work. The pieces which I have here put together are of this kind. They all belong to the days of his youth - the latest of them to 1853 or thereabouts, when he completed his twenty-fifth year. I think that every one of them has its value, whether on the ground of intrinsic merit, or as illustrating some phase of his mental development and practice. I have grouped them together as best I can, and added a few remarks by way of elucidation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
