Book Old Norse Icelandic Literature

Download or read book Old Norse Icelandic Literature written by Medieval Academy of America and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the past few decades, interest in the rich and varied literature of early Scandinavia has prompted a corresponding interest in its background: its origins, social and historical context, and relationship to other medieval literatures. Until the 1980s, however, there was a distinct lack of scholarship in English that synthesized the critical trends and thinking in the field, so in 1985 Carol J. Clover and John Lindow brought together several of the most distinguished Old Norse scholars to contribute essays for a collection that would finally provide a comprehensive guide to the major genres of Old Norse-Icelandic literature." "The contributors summarize and comment on scholarly work in the major branches of the field: eddic and skaldic poetry, family and kings' sagas, courtly writing, and mythology. Their essays, each with a full bibliography, make up this vital survey of Old Norse literature in English - a basic reference work that has stimulated much research and helped to open up the field to a wider academic readership." "This volume has become an essential text for instructors, and now, twenty years after its first appearance, it is being republished as part of the Medieval Academy Reprints for Teaching (MART) series with a new preface that discusses more recent contributions to the field."

Book Early Germanic Literature and Culture

Download or read book Early Germanic Literature and Culture written by Brian Murdoch and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2004 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of fresh essays examining the wide scope and significance of early Germanic culture and literature. The first volume of this set views the development of writing in German with respect to broad aspects of the early Germanic past, drawing on a range of disciplines including archaeology, anthropology, and philology in addition toliterary history. The first part considers the whole concept of Germanic antiquity and the way in which it has been approached, examines classical writings about Germanic origins and the earliest Germanic tribes, and looks at thetwo great influences on the early Germanic world: the confrontation with the Roman Empire and the displacement of Germanic religion by Christianity. A chapter on orality -- the earliest stage of all literature -- provides a bridgeto the earliest Germanic writings. The second part of the book is devoted to written Germanic -- rather than German -- materials, with a series of chapters looking first at the Runic inscriptions, then at Gothic, the first Germanic language to find its way onto parchment (in Ulfilas's Bible translation). The topic turns finally to what we now understand as literature, with general surveys of the three great areas of early Germanic literature: Old Norse, Old English, and Old High and Low German. A final chapter is devoted to the Old Saxon Heliand. Contributors: T. M. Andersson, Heinrich Beck, Graeme Dunphy, Klaus Düwel, G. Ronald Murphy, Adrian Murdoch, Brian Murdoch, Rudolf Simek, Herwig Wolfram. Brian Murdoch and Malcolm Read both teach in the German Department of the University of Stirling in Scotland.

Book THE SAGA OF CORMAC THE SKALD A Norse Viking Saga

Download or read book THE SAGA OF CORMAC THE SKALD A Norse Viking Saga written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story/saga of a poet, poor and proud, with all the strength of a Viking and all the weakness of genius. He loves a fine lady, a spoiled child; who bewitches him, and jilts him, and jilts him again. In true Viking style he fights for her, kills for her, writes verse for her, and rises, for her sake, to the height of all that a man in his age could achieve. Then, after years, he has her at his feet, and learns of her heartlessness and worthlessness. He bids her farewell; but in the end dies with her name on his lips. The motive of the book is very modern, yet at the same time as ancient as the human race itself. It is dramatic and imaginative in the sense that it is told by one who was an artist in his craft of saga-telling. The diction is of the simplest and there is no fine writing, but the plot is balanced like a Greek play and the action drives along to its close. The result is conveyed without a word of moralizing. The characters are broadly drawn, and their types are still valid today. Without needless detail, there are touches enough of realism. It reads like a novel, and yet it is a true story. 10% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to Charities. ============== Keywords/Tags: ashore, Asmund, battle, beauty, Bersi, blood, brother, Saga of Cormac the Skald, country, Dalla, day, dead, farm, father, fell, field, fight, firth, forth, fought, glory, goddess, gold, good, great, Halldor, Harald, healed, Helga, Holmgang, horse, house, Hrutafiord, Iceland, king, lady, little, Mel, Midfiord, mother, mountains, Narfi, Norway, ocean, Odin, Ogmund, point, riding, ring, sacrifice, Saga, Saurbæ, shame, ship, shore, Skald, Skeggi, Skofnung, slaughter, son, song, Steinar, Steingerd Steinvor, summer, sword, Thambardal, Thorarin, Thord, Thordis, Thorgil, Thorkel, Thorvald, Thorvard, Thorveig, Tinker, Tongue, Tunga, Vali, valley, voyage, weapon, weapons, wedding, Whitting, woman, wounded
