Book A History of Luther Seminary

Download or read book A History of Luther Seminary written by Mark A. Granquist and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church historian and Luther faculty member Mark Granquist provides a new and comprehensive history of Luther Seminary just in time for the celebration of the institution's 150th anniversary (1869-2019). Luther Seminary today is the product of the merger of number of seminaries over time. Granquist's search of Luther's past will provide an inside look at how Lutheran ministry was defined and formed. The path runs through the early university system, Orthodoxy, Pietism, and Rationalism, as well as the formation of Mission schools, and the beginnings of Lutheran theological education in North America. Granquist explores the confessional Norwegian Synod as well as the pietist Haugean tradition--the two bookends or twin traditions that would define and eventually become Luther Seminary. Chapters 4-6 explore each primary strand that formed the history of Luther. Chapter 7 focuses on unification and merger, concluding with the ELCA merger in 1988. The final chapter looks at more recent history, including internal unification, the challenges faced by the ELCA, and the major shifts in theological education in the early 21st century. Includes a gallery of photos chronicling Luther's history.

Book excerpt: The historic town of Clifton, Virginia, is an enchanting relic of a time past. This quarter-mile-square town of 225 inhabitants has seen little change since the early 20th century. Twenty-seven miles from the nations capital, this little gem of yesterday is often missed by busy commuters. Clifton was originally a Native American hunting ground, then a large plantation, and eventually became known as Devereux Station, named for J. H. Devereux, overseer of the Union armys railroad construction. Harrison Otis settled here and built the handsome Clifton Hotel. Local hot springs, shops, lumber industry, schools, and churches soon created a thriving, progressive area of commerce. Originally named Clifton Station, Clifton was later incorporated in 1902. It was the first community in Fairfax County with a black Baptist church, electricity, and a high school, and it has hosted visitors as varied as Presidents Hayes and Garfield, actress Helen Hayes, First Lady Nancy Reagan, and Sleepless in Seattle author Jeff Arch. Clifton has been and is still a gentle, picturesque village.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One of the best books ever written about the Cubs, their home and the fans who flock there to watch them, win or lose.”—Rolling Stone In spring 1914, a new ballpark opened in Chicago. Hastily constructed after epic political maneuvering around the city’s and organized baseball’s hierarchies, the new Weeghman Park (named after its builder, fast-food magnate Charley Weeghman) was home to the Federal Leagues Chicago Whales. The park would soon be known as Wrigley Field, one of the most emblematic and controversial baseball stadiums in America. In this book, Stuart Shea provides a detailed and colorful chronicle of this living historic landmark and shows how the stadium has evolved to meet the shifting priorities of its owners and changing demands of its fans. While Wrigley Field today seems irreplaceable, we learn that from game one it has been the subject of endless debates over its future, its design, and its place in the neighborhood it calls home. To some, it is a hallowed piece of baseball history; to others, an icon of mismanagement and ineptitude. Shea deftly navigates the highs and lows, breaking through myths and rumors, in a book packed with facts, stories, and surprises that will captivate even the most fair-weather fan. From big money (the Ricketts family paid $900 million for the team and stadium in 2009), to exploding hot dog carts, to the curse-inducing goat, Shea uncovers the heart of the stadium’s history. “More than any other American institution, baseball most wholeheartedly welcomes half-baked history and curdled lore. It's fun, after all; what grinch wishes to poke at the tale of Babe Ruth's called shot? But more often than not the real stories are even more delicious, and no one has gathered more of them than author Stuart Shea. His book is an unceasing delight.”—John Thorn, official historian, Major League Baseball and author of Baseball in the Garden of Eden
