Book A Commentary on ROMANS

Download or read book A Commentary on ROMANS written by David Pawson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would Paul write his longest letter to a church he had not founded or even visited? This expositor believes the answer lies in its history, culminating in a major crisis which could have split the whole church into two denominations. Originally Jewish (Acts 2:10–11), it soon attracted Gentiles, who were left on their own when Claudius evicted all Jews (Acts 18:2). In their absence a teaching emerged which we now know as 'Replacement Theology', believing that God has rejected the Jews and turned instead to the Christian Church as his chosen people on earth, a view which, alas, is now widespread. Paul's carefully argued answer shows how much believing Jews and Gentiles have in common, both in sin and salvation, in flesh and Spirit. This approach treats 'Chapters 9–11', (divisions never in his letter) as an integral part of his appeal, reaching its climax in a threefold challenge to the arrogance of the Gentile believers in Rome (11:18, 20, 25) in not warmly welcoming back into the fellowship the Jews who were allowed to return under Nero. This 'key' unlocks the whole epistle, from the solemn warning that believers can lose their salvation (11:20–22) to the careful instruction on how to live with 'disputable matters' such as diet and days (14:1 – 15:13); and ends with so many commands to greet each other with 'a holy kiss' (16:16). However, as with most of Paul's practical counsel, all this is firmly rooted in sound 'gospel' theology.

Book NEW TESTAMENT CONTEXTUAL COMMENTARY

Download or read book NEW TESTAMENT CONTEXTUAL COMMENTARY written by Dr. Robert R. Seyda and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here John advises us that loving one another is not an option or a suggestion, it is a commandment. John doesn’t want any believer to become like Adam and Eve’s firstborn, Cain. That happened because Cain was under the influence of Satan. This is, therefore, a warning not to mess with the world. So, what if they hate us? We are bound for everlasting life in the presence of God. That’s why death has no power over us. And that’s why, if our thoughts do not tell us that we are guilty, we will not be afraid to come to God. We can pray to God and we can ask Him to help us. He will give us what we ask Him for. That is because we obey His commands and we do the things that please Him. Furthermore, we should all love each other because God makes us able to love other people. Everyone who loves other people confirms our claim to be a child of God. If anyone says clearly that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in that person. And that person lives together with God. We know the kind of love that God has for us. That’s why if we love God, we will not be afraid of Him. So, how do we know that we love God’s children? We know it when we love God and we do what He tells us to do.

Book Hope for Alcoholics Addicts Inmates and Those Who Love Them

Download or read book Hope for Alcoholics Addicts Inmates and Those Who Love Them written by Gary L. and published by Inspiring Voices. This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When author Gary L. began his recovery journey from alcoholism at age thirty-one, he was emotionally, mentally, and spiritually bankrupt and had been contemplating suicide for about a year. He had everything to live for but was unable to see it. Hopelessness and despair were dark clouds over his life. Early one morning, while in a drunken stupor, he cried out to the God he’d turned his back on at age ten. Gary said later, “Early in recovery I discovered that God had never turned his back on me.” In Hope for Alcoholics, Addicts, Inmates (and Those Who Love Them), Gary, through a series of letters to a prison inmate, shares his story of recovery and a renewed relationship with God. Gary’s daily letters to Matt describe the journey out of the darkness into a life he never thought possible. The writings interpret, translate, and synthesize the pain, disillusion, anger, and rebellion of his own early life into a present-tense testimony of praise, glory, and gratitude to God. Hope for Alcoholics, Addicts, Inmates (and Those Who Love Them) discusses Gary’s experience with the Twelve Steps of AA and how they have influenced his life. Accented with scriptural passages, it shares discoveries he made about himself, God, and life.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.
