Book excerpt: An uncompromising tale of obsession and the darker side of love First published in 1945, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept by Elizabeth Smart is considered a classic of autobiographical fiction. Set in America, it tells of the narrator’s obsessive affair with a married man and is based on Smart’s real life relationship with the English poet, George Barker, with whom she had four children. It has remained in print for over seventy years. Five years later, Barker published his own account of their affair in the novel The Dead Seagull. In his version, the narrator lives with his pregnant wife, Theresa, in a cottage by the sea somewhere in England. When Theresa invites an old school friend to stay she is oblivious, busy as she is dealing with the impending birth of her child, to the fact that her friend and husband embark upon a passionate affair that will destroy the very life and family she is trying to build. The Dead Seagull is an uncompromising tale of obsession and the darker side of love. It has been out of print for over thirty years and is published here for the first time in ebook, with the support and permission of the Barker family, and an introduction by George Barker’s daughter Raffaella. Praise for The Dead Seagull ‘By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept by Elizabeth Smart is undoubtedly a classic and The Dead Seagull is its lost half.’ Cassandra Pybus

Book Miss Thistlebottom s Hobgoblins

Download or read book Miss Thistlebottom s Hobgoblins written by Theodore Menline Bernstein and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1971 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old adage, rules are made to be broken has never been as well defended as in MISS THISTLEBOTTOM'S HOBGOBLINS. Throughout the book, Bernstein asserts that we have been indoctrinated with English usage rules that lack flexibility and evoke fear, confusion and frustration in writers. There are times when splitting an infinitive or ending a sentence with a preposition makes sense. Through a series of one-sided correspondences with Bertha Thistlebottom, an archetypal grade school English teacher, Bernstein addresses the community of rule mongering sticklers who have tried to squeeze the English language into a set of inflexible rules and outmoded definitions that only serve to stifle its growth and paralyze writers. In addition to his letters to Miss Thistlebottom, there are scores of entries where Bernstein debunks the rules of yesteryear with wit and intelligence and illustrates how to write effectively -- without the worry of hobgoblins.

Book excerpt: This classic novel, sometimes attributed to one "James Jennings," was published by Olympia in the firm's later incarnations. Eveline: is 18, beautiful, aristocratic, intelligent, and uppermost in the minds of male admirers. This young student sweeps readers along in her tales of erotic pleasure with the lascivious Major General, the prodigiously endowed stable-hand, and the splendid but stern Inspector General. This tale of a girl's sexual rites of passage is audacious, surprising, and blazingly erotic-- as one review puts it, though that's hardly the whole story. The Major-General is a blood relative, as are other objects of Eveline's hardly-innocent affections.

Book The Selected Writings of Sydney Smith

Download or read book The Selected Writings of Sydney Smith written by W. H. Auden and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'He is a very clever fellow, but he will never be a bishop.' George III 'A more profligate parson I never met.' George IV 'I sat next to Sydney Smith, who was delightful ... I don't remember a more agreeable party.' Benjamin Disraeli 'I wish you would tell Mr Sydney Smith that of all the men I ever heard of and never saw, I have the greatest curiosity to see ... and to know him.' Charles Dickens How one agrees with Dickens. Without doubt, Sydney Smith was the most famous wit of his generation. But there was more to him than that, he was an outstanding representative of the English liberal tradition. Starting as an impoverished village curate he went to Edinburgh as a tutor, and co-founded the Edinburgh Review, the first major nineteenth-century periodical. Happily married, he moved in 1803 to London, where he was introduced into the Holland House circle - of which he quickly became an admired and popular member - but at the age of thirty-eight a Tory government banished him to a village parsonage. There he became 'one of the best country vicars of whom there is a record', and after his two chief causes - the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829 and the Reform Bill of 1832 - triumphed, he was rewarded by a canonry of St. Paul's. This generous selection of his writings gives the full flavour of his mind and intellectual personality. In a characteristically stimulating introduction in which he discusses Sydney Smith both as an individual and as a shining exemplar of the liberal mind, W. H. Auden places him with Jonathan Swift and Bernard Shaw among the few polemic authors 'who must be ranked very high by any literary standard.' As Macaulay said he was 'The Smith of Smiths'.
