Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original compositions in this book were inspired by the ancient Greek dances. Dance has played an important role in the society and life of Greeks throughout their history. In the ancient Greek societies, dance was held in high regard. Philosophers Plato (427-347 BC) and Aristotle (384-322 BC) wrote detailed descriptions of the dances. Dance, along with writing, music and physical exercise was basic to the education system and many authors praised its virtues for both body and soul. There are over 4000 traditional dances from all regions of Greece. There are also Pan Hellenic dances which have been adopted and performed throughout the Greek world and by international folk dance groups.

Book CONCERT MUSIC FOR BANDS Volume 3

Download or read book CONCERT MUSIC FOR BANDS Volume 3 written by Evangelos C. Sembos and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 204 pages. The book includes full score for the conductor and parts for each individual instrument. PYRRHIC DANCE: Inspired by dances depicted on ancient Greek plates and vases, this complex and brooding score reflects the conflicting moods felt by warriors as they demonstrated their physical strength and agility before heading off to battle. It is proud and celebratory, yet foreshadows the uncertainty that lay ahead. GERANOS DANCE: A tune custom-made for Greek folk dancing, with communal spirit and an upbeat, optimistic outlook. There is constant implied motion that grows more and more hectic as the dancers, all holding hands in a circle, would weave together and tie themselves into knots. Any knot that is tied, however, must eventually be untied. And so the joyful dance continues... Michael C. Sembos

Download or read book Telluric dances written by Christos Hatzis and published by Promethean Editions Limited. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition is an arrangement of the original work, scored for oboe and orchestra, and has been arranged to work as a stand-alone recital piece but also functions as a rehearsal tool for the orchestral version. Influenced by Greek dance music, Hatzis' concerto for oboe and orchestra showcases virtuosic oboe performance through a blend of exotic and exciting music based on Mediterranean and Eastern European dance forms. Each of the three movements centres on a style of dance: chiftetelli, a common dance form originating from the Eastern Mediterranean; a passacaglia based on a 9-beat rhythmic pattern known in Greece as a zeibekiko (an improvised dance characterised by sudden and unexpected movements); and a common Balkan folk dance. Throughout the work, Hatzis references tonal modes characteristic of Turkish and Arabic music, which he first encountered in the Greek night-clubs of Toronto while working as a young composer in local bands. As such, this work reveals aspects in the genesis of Hatzis' eclectic style of music. Professional and advancing oboists alike will soar and exhilarate audiences with this work.
