It is rather, I take it, that your Pastors here have asked the men of this place who form this congregation to stand aside, as it were, to estimate a little their special and peculiar cases, concerns, and religious interests as Christian men, even though they may not have always succeeded or endeavoured to rise to the height of their own knowledge or aims. I assume, then, a religious interest existing in those to whom I speak, and how shall I try humbly and simply to turn it to account. I hear you have been lately spoken to on what are the obstacles of religion, arising on the intellectual side, and some on the moral side; let me rather speak of the practical and social difficulties which constantly beset us. I shall speak of the hindrances of the willing disciple of Jesus Christ, which arise from ridicule or mockery, and the best means of meeting it. The Prophet, in the words I have taken for my text, is speaking of men who mocked and derided Almighty God; but it bears the wide and general application I shall give it. It will represent to us one of the most real hindrances of professing Christians and disciples of Jesus Christ.
