Download or read book Seismic Motion Lithospheric Structures Earthquake and Volcanic Sources written by Yehuda Ben-Zion and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geophysicists use seismic signals to image structures in the Earth's interior, to understand the mechanics of earthquake and volcanic sources, and to estimate their associated hazards. Keiiti Aki developed pioneering quantitative methods for extracting useful information from various portions of observed seismograms and applied these methods to many problems in the above fields. This volume honors Aki's contributions with review papers and results from recent applications by his former students and scientific associates pertaining to topics spawned by his work. Discussed subjects include analytical and numerical techniques for calculating dynamic rupture and radiated seismic waves, stochastic models used in engineering seismology, earthquake and volcanic source processes, seismic tomography, properties of lithospheric structures, analysis of scattered waves, and more. The volume will be useful to students and professional geophysicists alike.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The petrographic database consists of 705 maceral analyses, reflectance measurements, and density and porosity determinations from Utah coal samples. These data were collected by the Utah Geological Survey from 1982 to 1995. Samples were collected from seven of Utah's 22 coal fields. Coal fields sampled are the Book Cliffs (182 samples), Wasatch Plateau (262 samples), Emery (41 samples), Sego (27 samples), Henry Mountains (173 samples), Kaiparowits Plateau (12 samples), and Coalville (four samples). The data are sorted by coal-field names; within each field the analyses are arranged alphabetically by coal-bed name to facilitate comparison. The aim of the database is to provide the industry with information on petrographic properties of Utah coals. In addition, it should help the coal operators and purchasers to determine the best uses for Utah coals.

Download or read book Geologic Hazards of Monroe City Sevier County Utah written by Richard E. Giraud and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2004 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologic hazards are naturally occurring processes that present a risk to life and property. This report provides information for the Monroe City area, in Utah's central Sevier Valley, to reduce losses from geologic hazards. Surficial-geologic mapping provides the basis on which individual geologic hazards are identified and mapped. Alluvial-fan and basin-fill deposits cover most of the map area. Other deposits consist of colluvium, artificial fill, spring travertine, and volcanic bedrock. The geologic hazards maps show where hazards may exist. The maps should be used to inform citizens and developers of potential risks and for local government officials to make prudent land-use planning decisions. The maps are general, and site-specific studies are needed to demonstrate site suitability prior to development. Typical risk-reduction methods for these geologic hazards generally include avoidance or engineering design to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

Download or read book Earthquake Scenario and Probabilistic Ground Shaking Maps for the Salt Lake City Utah Metropolitan Area written by Ivan Gynmun Wong and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2002 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Salt Lake City metropolitan area is one of the most seismically hazardous urban areas in the interior of the western U.S. because of its location within the Intermountain Seismic Belt and its position adjacent to the active Wasatch fault. The elapsed time since the last large earthquake on the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch fault is approaching the mean recurrence interval based on the short-term paleoseismic record. In order to help raise the awareness of the general public and to help reduce earthquake risk in this area, we have developed nine microzonation maps showing surficial ground-shaking hazard. The maps are GIS-based and incorporate the site response effects of the unconsolidated sediments that underlie most of the metropolitan area within Salt Lake Valley. These nine maps, at a scale of 1:75,000, make up three sets, each consisting of three maps that display color-contoured ground motions in terms of (1) peak horizontal acceleration, (2) horizontal spectral acceleration at a period of 0.2 sec (5 Hz) and, (3) horizontal spectral acceleration at a period of 1.0 sec (1 Hz). One set of maps consists of deterministic or “scenario” maps for a moment magnitude (M) 7.0 earthquake on the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch fault. The two other sets are probabilistic maps for the two return periods of building code relevance, 500 and 2,500 years.
