Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to analyze the problem of the intensity of forms in the late Middle Ages and to show how this debate eventually gave rise to a new metaphysical project in the 14th century: the project of quantifying the different types of perfections existing in the universe – that is the project of “measuring being”.

Download or read book Challenges in synchronic toponymy D fis de la toponymie synchronique written by Jonas Löfström and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to globalization, synchronic approaches in toponymy arise increasing interest among linguists. This volume takes stock of different approaches to synchronic toponymy presenting linguistic studies on toponyms - in as various fields as grammar, morphosyntax, semantics, and pragmatics - which describe their structure and lexical status, their semantic facets, applied to the psychological, sociological and political implications of their use and function in discourse. All these factors account for the great variety of linguistic projects related to toponyms, i.e. modelling, as well as the use and normalization of toponyms in spoken and written contexts.

Book Mediaeval Commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard

Download or read book Mediaeval Commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work published in this third, and final, volume of Brill’s handbook on the tradition of the Book of Sentences breaks new ground in three ways. First, several chapters contribute to the debate concerning the meaning of medieval authority and authorship. For some of the most influential literature on the Sentences consisted of study aids and compilations that were derivative or circulated anonymously. Consequently, the volume also sheds light on theological education “on the ground”—the kind of teaching that was dispensed by the average master and received by the average student. Finally, the contributors show that Peter Lombard’s textbook played a much more dynamic role in later medieval theology than hitherto assumed. The work remained a force to be reckoned with until at least the sixteenth century, especially in the Iberian Peninsula. Contributors are Claire Angotti, Monica Brinzei, Franklin T. Harkins, Severin V. Kitanov, Lidia Lanza, Philipp W. Rosemann, Chris Schabel, John T. Slotemaker, Marco Toste, Jeffrey C. Witt, and Ueli Zahnd.

Book Augustine s Way into the Will

Download or read book Augustine s Way into the Will written by Simon Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine's dialogue De libero arbitrio (On Free Choice) is, with his Confessions and City of God, one of his most important and widely read works. It contains one of the earliest accounts of the concept of 'free will' in the history of philosophy. Composed during a key period in Augustine's early career, between his conversion to Christianity and his ordination as a bishop, it has often been viewed as a an incoherent mixture of his 'early' and 'late' thinking. Simon Harrison offers an original account of Augustine's theory of will, taking seriously both the philosophical arguments and literary form of the text. Relating De libero arbitrio to other key texts of Augustine's, in particular the City of God and the Confessions, Harrison shows that Augustine approaches the problem of free will as a problem of knowledge: how do I know that I am free?, and that Augustine uses the dialogue form to instantiate his 'way into the will'.

Book Le Brutus de Cic ron

Download or read book Le Brutus de Cic ron written by Sophie Aubert-Baillot and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Cicero’s dialogue Brutus offers a history of Roman eloquence from its origins and Greek roots up to the time of the work's composition (46 BC) in the late Republic. It forms part of Cicero’s response to the political and intellectual changes brought about by Caesar’s dictatorship and has therefore attracted considerable scholarly attention from a number of fields. However, scholarly discourse has frequently remained isolated. This volume addresses the need to look at Cicero’s treatise from an interdisciplinary angle and assembles contributions from scholars of historiography, prosopography, rhetoric, philosophy and politics. It thus puts forward a coherent and genuine interpretation of Cicero’s Brutus that showcases the significance of this text for our understanding of the final years of the Roman Republic.
