Book Voice Lessons

Download or read book Voice Lessons written by Cara Mentzel and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voice Lessons is the story of one younger sister growing up in the shadow of a larger-than-life older sister—looking up to her, wondering how they were alike and how they were different and, ultimately, learning how to live her own life and speak in her own voice on her own terms. As Cara Mentzel, studied, explored, married, gave birth (twice) and eventually became an elementary school teacher, she watched her sister, Idina Menzel, from the wings and gives readers a front row seat to opening night of Rent and Wicked, a seat at the Tonys, and a place on the red carpet when her sister taught millions more, as the voice of Queen Elsa in the animated musical Frozen, to “Let It Go.” Voice Lessons is the story of sisters—sisters with pig tails, sisters with boyfriends and broken hearts, sisters as mothers and aunts, sisters as teachers and ice-queens, sisters as allies and confidantes. As Cara puts it, “My big sister is Tony-Award-Winning, Gravity-Defying, Let-It-Go-Singing Idina Menzel who has received top billing on Broadway marquees, who has performed for Barbra Streisand and President Obama, at the Super Bowl and at the Academy Awards. The world knows her as 'Idina Menzel', but I call her 'Dee'.” Voice Lessons is their story.

Book The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters

Download or read book The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters written by Julie Klam and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Washington Post best nonfiction book pick of 2021 “It is biography as an expression of love.” – The New York Times New York Times–bestselling author Julie Klam’s funny and moving story of the Morris sisters, distant relations with mysterious pasts. Ever since she was young, Julie Klam has been fascinated by the Morris sisters, cousins of her grandmother. According to family lore, early in the twentieth century the sisters’ parents decided to move the family from Eastern Europe to Los Angeles so their father could become a movie director. On the way, their pregnant mother went into labor in St. Louis, where the baby was born and where their mother died. The father left the children in an orphanage and promised to send for them when he settled in California—a promise he never kept. One of the Morris sisters later became a successful Wall Street trader and advised Franklin Roosevelt. The sisters lived together in New York City, none of them married or had children, and one even had an affair with J. P. Morgan. The stories of these independent women intrigued Klam, but as she delved into them to learn more, she realized that the tales were almost completely untrue. The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters is the revealing account of what Klam discovered about her family—and herself—as she dug into the past. The deeper she went into the lives of the Morris sisters, the slipperier their stories became. And the more questions she had about what actually happened to them, the more her opinion of them evolved. Part memoir and part confessional, and told with the wit and honesty that are hallmarks of Klam’s books, The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters is the fascinating and funny true story of one writer’s journey into her family’s past, the truths she brings to light, and what she learns about herself along the way.

Book The Sisters Story

Download or read book The Sisters Story written by R.M. Dalton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sisters' Story - Legend of Queen Brighton and Sister Jasmine This is the story of two sisters who are born into a peaceful and beautiful isolated valley. But fate or Providence has a job for each of them far from home. The story tells of how they find a path over the forbidding crags that hem their valley in, although nobody else believed it even existed, and so they make their way at last to the kingdom their ancestors fled from long ago, though as yet they do not know any of their history. The girls grow into women; they were teenagers when they set out from home, and each finds what seems to be a place in life and a destiny - yet it is not to be. The older meets her prince charming and marries him. For a while they reign happily enough, yet we see the cares and responsibilities that they bear as the rulers. The younger chooses another path and so they go their separate ways, as siblings generally do. In differing ways also, grave trials and despair come to each. Each wrestles with hopelessness and temptations, yearning for the childhood love with which they supported each other, but not finding it. So, still separated, each makes at length for home and peace, where they are reconciled and spend their days fruitfully in happiness, although the way home is not easy either. The story is about conquest and overcoming, through courage, honesty, faith and love. It is about how two innocents go into the World and gain much, and loose much too. They return home, yet in the wisdom each has learned, the gifts they bring from the outside back to their rustic valley are only beneficial. They also leave behind something of the simple, honest and kindly ways of the Valley in the lands they visited. This is not an allegory, although there may be parallels drawn about choices and their consequences and the sincere effort that repentance and returning may require. It is not a fairy story either - there is no fairy godmother, no wizard and no magic unless it be the magic conjured by love for another, and courage and a good heart. It is a story embodying hope and purpose, even when the actors in the story do not know at that time what it may be.

Book Sisters in War

Download or read book Sisters in War written by Christina Asquith and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-05-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caught up in a terrifying war, facing choices of life and death, two Iraqi sisters take us into the hidden world of women’s lives under U.S. occupation. Through their powerful story of love and betrayal, interwoven with the stories of a Palestinian American women’s rights activist and a U.S. soldier, journalist Christina Asquith explores one of the great untold sagas of the Iraq war: the attempt to bring women’s rights to Iraq, and the consequences for all those involved. On the heels of the invasion, twenty-two-year-old Zia accepts a job inside the U.S. headquarters in Baghdad, trusting that democracy will shield her burgeoning romance with an American contractor from the disapproval of her fellow Iraqis. But as resistance to the U.S. occupation intensifies, Zia and her sister, Nunu, a university student, are targeted by Islamic insurgents and find themselves trapped between their hopes for a new country and the violent reality of a misguided war. Asquith sets their struggle against the broader U.S. efforts to bring women’s rights to Iraq, weaving the sisters’ story with those of Manal, a Palestinian American women’s rights activist, and Heather, a U.S. army reservist, who work together to found Iraq’s first women’s center. After one of their female colleagues is gunned down on a highway, Manal and Heather must decide whether they can keep fighting for Iraqi women if it means risking their own lives. In Sisters in War, Christina Asquith introduces the reader to four women who dare to stand up for their rights in the most desperate circumstances. With compassion and grace, she vividly reveals the plight of women living and serving in Iraq and offers us a vision of how women’s rights and Islam might be reconciled.

Book excerpt: A USA Today and Globe and Mail bestseller! A novel of survival, love, loss, triumph—and the sisters who changed fashion forever Antoinette and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel know they’re destined for something better. Abandoned by their family at a young age, they’ve grown up under the guidance of nuns preparing them for simple lives as the wives of tradesmen or shopkeepers. At night, their secret stash of romantic novels and magazine cutouts beneath the floorboards are all they have to keep their dreams of the future alive. The walls of the convent can’t shield them forever, and when they’re finally of age, the Chanel sisters set out together with a fierce determination to prove themselves worthy to a society that has never accepted them. Their journey propels them out of poverty and to the stylish cafés of Moulins, the dazzling performance halls of Vichy—and to a small hat shop on the rue Cambon in Paris, where a boutique business takes hold and expands to the glamorous French resort towns. But the sisters’ lives are again thrown into turmoil when World War I breaks out, forcing them to make irrevocable choices, and they’ll have to gather the courage to fashion their own places in the world, even if apart from each other. “The Chanel Sisters explores with care the timeless need for belonging, purpose, and love, and the heart’s relentless pursuit of these despite daunting odds. Beautifully told to the last page.” —Susan Meissner, bestselling author of The Last Year of the War

Three sisters have returned to their childhood home, reuniting the eccentric Andreas family. Here, books are a passion (there is no problem a library card can't solve) and TV is something other people watch. Their father—a professor of Shakespeare who speaks almost exclusively in verse—named them after the Bard's heroines. It's a lot to live up to. The sisters each have a hard time communicating with their parents and their lovers, but especially with one another. What can the shy homebody eldest sister, the fast-living middle child, and the bohemian youngest sibling have in common? Only that none has found life to be what was expected; and now, faced with their parents' frailty and their own personal disappointments, not even a book can solve what ails them...
