Download or read book The Sleuth and the Goddess written by Susan Rowland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rowland presents a detailed exploration of how the archetypes of ancient goddesses Hestia, Artemis, Athena and Aphrodite breathe into and shape female-authored detective fiction. Representing aspects of characterisation not bound by gender, the book examines how these archetypes emerge in themes like the home and hearth, hunting, survival and desire. Rowland assesses numerous examples from a range of works, providing a clear illustration of each archetype and illuminating aspects of femininity, psyche and being. This uniquely interdisciplinary work of literary analysis sheds light on the popularity and underlying mystique of the genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Flora, daughter of Flora, and this is the tale of an adventure. My twin sister has for years yearned to leave the city walls and engage in a great quest of sorts. As we reach age her wanderlust can no longer be satiated. I am somewhat indifferent, but I tag along. We have left the comfort of our city, equipped with items and weaponry to keep us safe, much of it donated by Mother and the Alchemy Department. We travel upon the open road that leads far from our home. Deciding to retire for the night, we head to the local inn in the first village we come across. There at the tavern we meet a woodland ranger who gives his name only as 'The Challenger'. The ranger appears to have a mysterious past and he claims to be neutral and chaotic, a far cry from our youthful idealism, but he seems to know the surrounding wilderness lands. At dawn we part from the village, ready to explore the countryside and find a worthy quest. Into this world full of friends and foes alike we journey onward, through forest and field, over hill and mountain. Where will these rustic roads and twisting trails take us? Read within these pages the tale of Our Adventures With The Challenger.

Download or read book Motherland written by Fern Schumer Chapman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving account of a mother and daughter who visit Germany to face the Holocaust tragedy that has caused their family decades of intergenerational trauma, from the author of Brothers, Sisters, Strangers Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award In 1938, when Edith Westerfeld was twelve, her parents sent her from Germany to America to escape the Nazis. Edith survived, but most of her family perished in the death camps. Unable to cope with the loss of her family and homeland, Edith closed the door on her past, refusing to discuss even the smallest details. Fifty-four years later, when the void of her childhood was consuming both her and her family, she returned to Stockstadt with her grown daughter Fern. For Edith the trip was a chance to reconnect and reconcile with her past; for Fern it was a chance to learn what lay behind her mother's silent grief. Together, they found a town that had dramatically changed on the surface, but which hid guilty secrets and lived in enduring denial. On their journey, Fern and her mother shared many extraordinary encounters with the townspeople and—more importantly—with one another, closing the divide that had long stood between them. Motherland is a story of learning to face the past, of remembering and honoring while looking forward and letting go. It is an account of the Holocaust’s lingering grip on its witnesses; it is also a loving story of mothers and daughters, roots, understanding, and, ultimately, healing.

Book excerpt: UW Archives holds up to three copies of each volume of the yearbook from its initial publication in 1884 to its final publication in 2014 (129 volumes). The publication of the yearbook did not become annual until 1887, as such there are no yearbooks for 1885 or 1886. The only other interruption in yearbooks was for the years 1973 and 1974. There are still yearbooks from these years, but they were published by the Wisconsin Alumni Association rather than the student body, as such they are spare, consisting mostly of portraits of students. UW Archives currently holds at least one copy of every published volume. The 1st copy of each volume is held onsite at UW Archives while the second and third copies, where they exist, are held offsite.
