Book excerpt: Examines how images of accumulation help open up the climate to political mobilization The current epoch is one of accumulation: not only of capital but also of raw, often unruly material, from plastic in the ocean and carbon in the atmosphere to people, buildings, and cities. Alongside this material growth, image-making practices embedded within the fields of art and architecture have proven to be fertile, mobile, and capacious. Images of accumulation help open up the climate to cultural inquiry and political mobilization and have formed a cultural infrastructure focused on the relationships between humans, other species, and their environments. The essays in Accumulation address this cultural infrastructure and the methodological challenges of its analysis. They offer a response to the relative invisibility of the climate now seen as material manifestations of social behavior. Contributors outline opportunities and ambitions of visual scholarship as a means to encounter the challenges emergent in the current moment: how can climate become visible, culturally and politically? Knowledge of climatic instability can change collective behavior and offer other trajectories, counteraccumulations that draw the present into a different, more livable, future. Jahrhunderts formten.

Book A Cultural History of the Avant Garde in the Nordic Countries 1900 1925

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Avant Garde in the Nordic Countries 1900 1925 written by Hubert van den Berg and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2012 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries 1900-1925 is the first publication to deal with the avant-garde in the Nordic countries at the start of the twentieth century. The essays cover a wide range of avant-garde manifestations in arts and culture: literature, the visual arts, painting as well as photography, architecture and design, film, radio, and performing arts like music, theatre and dance. It is the first major historical work to consider the Nordic avant-garde in a transnational perspective which includes all the arts and to discuss the role of the avant-garde not only within the aesthetic field, but in a broader cultural context. It examines the social and cultural context of the avant-garde: its media, its locations, its reception and audiences, the transmissions between Scandinavia and Europe, and its cultural consequences. The essays trace the connections between the avant-garde and the cultural discourses of contemporary currents such as revolutionary socialism, radical nationalism and occultism, and discuss questions of gender, ideology and politics, geographical location and technological innovation. The cultural history thus focuses on the role of the avant-garde in shaping the ideas of cultural modernity in the Nordic countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Created entirely from found images, ALBUM collects the first ten issues of a zine by the same name begun by Eline Mugaas and Elise Storsveen in 2008. Comprised of full page photographic illustrations, advertisements, and other ubiquitous media images culled from etiquette manuals, cookbooks, travel magazines, craft books, fashion magazines, and sexual manuals, ALBUM reflects the popular imagery found in Scandinavian households from the 1960s through the 1980s. The chosen imagery is then arranged across spreads, creating a sophisticated and humorous reading organized by a series of heavy themes such as the lonely man, femininity, architecture, family, outer space, and nature. While seemingly whimsical, ALBUM provides a sophisticated meta-narrative on the human body, sexuality, and the social lives of images that places the reader in an uncanny arena that showcases how our media likely reads us."--

Book Lucas Blalock A Grocer s Orgy

Download or read book Lucas Blalock A Grocer s Orgy written by Lucas Blalock and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This career-spanning artist's book presents an alternate history of the photography of New York-based photographer Lucas Blalock (born 1978), featuring new images and previously unseen versions of existing artworks. Employing his signature style of unconcealed digital alterations, including erasures and drawings, and working in both color and black and white, Blalock emphasizes what is absent or obliterated in his manipulated portraits, scenes and still lives, often with a deadpan humor. In A Grocer's Orgy, the artist's layout of such images brings to the forefront the underlying themes, formal connections and art-historical reference points that are often overlooked in the context of his exhibitions.
