Download or read book INRI written by Raúl Zurita and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A harrowing meditation on tyranny, torture, and freedom by one of Chilé's most celebrated contemporary poets. Raúl Zurita’s INRI is a visionary response to the atrocities committed under the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. In this deeply moving elegy for the dead, the whole of Chile, with its snow-covered cordilleras and fields of wildflowers, its empty spaces and the sparkling sea beyond, is simultaneously transformed into the grave of its lost children and their living and risen body. Zurita’s incantatory, unapologetically political work is one of the great prophetic poems of our new century.
Download or read book The Splendor of Portugal written by António Lobo Antunes and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Splendor of Portugal's four narrators are members of a once well-to-do family whose plantation was lost in the Angolan War of Independence; the matriarch of this unhappiest of clans and her three adult children speak in a nightmarish, remorseless gush to give us the details of their grotesque family life. Like a character out of Faulkner's decayed south, the mother clings to the hope that her children will come back, save her from destitution, and restore the family's imagined former glory. The children, for their part, haven't seen each other in years, and in their isolation are tormented by feverish memories of Angola. The vitriol and self-hatred of the characters know no bounds, for they are at once victims and culprits, guilty of atrocities committed in the name of colonialism as well as the cruel humiliations and betrayals of their own kin. Antunes again proves that he is the foremost stylist of his generation, a fearless investigator into the worst excesses of the human animal.

Download or read book Father of Frankenstein written by Christopher Bram and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Whale was the most brilliant director of horror films Hollywood has ever seen, director of such classics as Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein (and indeed every horror film rated with four stars in Halliwell's Film Guide). But he was by no means a typical Hollywood product, both because he was English and because he was openly gay in the Hollywood of the 30s. Christopher Bram's moving and powerful novel portrays Whale in his last weeks of life in 1957, overwhelmed by images of his past, his working class childhood in Britain, Hollywood premieres in the 30s, friendships with Elsa Lanchester, Charles Laughton and Elizabeth Taylor. Consumed by the contrast between his past and his present obscurity, he conspires with his young gardener to provide his life with the dramatic ending it deserves.

Download or read book AO ASIF Principles in Spine Surgery written by Irene Zintel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-12-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has become necessary as a consequence of the rapid expansion of the surgical procedures and implants available for spinal surgery within the "AO Group". We have not attempted to write an in-depth book on spinal surgery, but one which will help the surgeon in the use of AO concepts and implants. We con sider the practical courses held all over the world essential for the teaching of sound techniques so that technical complications and poor results can be avoid ed for both the surgeon and, in particular the patient. This book is a practical manual and an outline of what is taught in the courses. It is intended to help the young spinal surgeon to understand the correct use of AO implants. The indi- tions given will aid the correct use of each procedure. . It must be strongly emphasized that surgery of the spine is technically de manding. The techniques described in this book should only be undertaken by surgeons who are trained and experienced in spinal surgery. Certain techniques, in particular pedicle screw fIxation and cages, have not yet been fully approved by the FDA in the United States. However, throughout the rest of the world, the use of pedicle screws has become a standard technique for the spine surgeon, since it has been shown to improve fIxation techniques and allow segmental correction of the spine. The use of cages has become more and more popular, specifIcally as a tool of minimally invasive spinal surgery.
Download or read book The Pocho Research Society Field Guide to L A written by Sandra de la Loza and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual and performance artist Sandra de la Loza presents a wry commentary on the Chicano history of Los Angeles in this field guide to Downtown and East Los Angeles. Using the format of the photographic essay, she documents the exploits of the Pocho Research Society, an organization dedicated to commemorating sites in Los Angeles that are of importance to the Chicano community but that have been erased by urban development or neglect. Through the unauthorized acts of commemoration, the Pocho Research Society calls our attention to their absence from official narratives. The field guide also offers playful tours of the murals at Estrada Courts and the Fort No Moore Secret Museum, founded by the Pocho Research Society to preserve the history of the Fort Moore Pioneer Memorial (a history that includes accounts of the Lizard People, who lived in catacombs far beneath the monument). By drawing attention to these invisible monuments and lost histories, de la Loza asks her readers to consider the broader question of what constitutes a community's history.

Download or read book Wrinkles in Time written by George Smoot and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrophysicist George Smoot spent decades pursuing the origin of the cosmos, "the holy grail of science," a relentless hunt that led him from the rain forests of Brazil to the frozen wastes of Antarctica. In his search he struggled against time, the elements, and the forces of ignorance and bureaucratic insanity. Finally, after years of research, Smoot and his dedicated team of Berkeley researchers succeeded in proving the unprovable—uncovering, inarguably and for all time, the secrets of the creation of the universe. Wrinkles in Time describes this startling discovery that would usher in a new scientific age—and win Smoot the Nobel Prize in Physics.
