Book Sir William Waad Lieutenant of the Tower and the Gunpowder Plot

Download or read book Sir William Waad Lieutenant of the Tower and the Gunpowder Plot written by Fiona Bengtsen and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Sir William Waad became Lieutenant of the Tower of London in August 1605, only three months before the Gunpowder Plot, it was the culmination of a lifetime of service to the Crown. For the previous 22 years he had been a constant visitor to the Tower. As secretary of the Privy Council, he had interrogated numerous prisoners on behalf of the State, several of them under torture. Many of those incarcerated owed their unfortunate position to his skill as an interrogator. He had risen from inquisitor to gaoler With a known hatred of Catholics and an extensive inside knowledge of almost all previous plots against Queen Elizabeth, Waad's experience as both an 'intelligencer' and inquisitor made him the ideal candidate for the post of Lieutenant of the Tower of London shortly before the Gunpowder Plot. His early life and experiences produced a loyal servant of the State who was capable of dealing with foreign kings as well as common villains. He had been closely involved with the intelligence network operating in Elizabethan England and continued this association when James came to the throne. With years of experience dealing with informers, Waad knew how to extract information and how to discern plot from counter-plot. Waad's role in the Gunpowder Plot and in the capture, interrogation and execution of the culprits are explored in detail. Proud of his achievements in bringing the perpetrators to justice, he erected a huge commemorative monument in his Governor's house at the Tower, which still exists today. Yet, despite his obvious success as Lieutenant of the Tower, he was eventually ousted from his post on suspicion of embezzlement, and narrowly escaped being indicted for murder. He retired to his 'farm' near the village of Manuden, Essex and was buried there in 1623.

Download or read book The Gunpowder Plot Deceit written by Martyn R. Beardsley and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people think they know the story of the Gunpowder Plot, and of how a bloody catastrophe was averted at the eleventh hour when Guy Fawkes was caught lurking in the shadows beneath the Houses of Parliament. But what if it wasnt like that at all? How was it that a group of prominent, disaffected Catholics were able to plot for months with apparent impunity? How could they openly rent a house next door to the House of Lords and use it as their base right under the nose of the leading spymaster of the age, Robert Cecil? How could they have hacked a tunnel towards their target and dispose of tonnes of spoil without alerting anyone and why is there no record of anyone ever having seen such a tunnel? This book explores the idea that the government was not only aware of what the plotters were up to long before Fawkes arrest, but that agent-provocateurs may have given them a helping hand or have even instigated the plot themselves.

Book The Gunpowder Plot and Markham

Download or read book The Gunpowder Plot and Markham written by Michael Fitzalan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth behind one of the oldest fictions in history can finally be told. The Catholics were in danger of wresting influence from Robert Cecil who had managed to remove Queen Elizabeth's favourites and put himself at the forefront of political power. King James, easily influenced, especially by a pretty face, male or female, needed to be restrained, especially with his profligate spending. Cecil had three goals, therefore: remove the Catholic nobility; limit Puritan influence and endear himself to the king by becoming even more favoured than the pretty boys at court, the most influential of them had saved James's life. The Puritans were dealt with by the king at 'The Hampton Court Conference' and that left the Catholics and the pretty boys. If he could only hatch a plot to discredit the Catholics and save the king at the same time, he would remove any potential opposition and earn the king's undying gratitude, put him above all others in the king's estimation. So he did

Book The Two Walter Raleighs

Download or read book The Two Walter Raleighs written by Fred B. Tromly and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Raleigh's biographers have given little attention to his tragic relationship with his son Wat (Walter). They began in proud identification, each seeing himself in the other. But after the father's political downfall and imprisonment for treason, he lost his authority in the family, and the son began to reject paternal advice and his studies and to engage in violent quarrels and duels. Often the father used his influence to rescue his son from his rash acts. Things came to a head after Wat was sued by a young woman for violent assault, and imprisoned. The aged Raleigh had been freed from the Tower to lead an expedition to Guiana, and--as recently discovered documents reveal--he delivered his son from the law by commissioning him as a captain on his flagship, ominously named the Destiny. In a shared tragedy, Wat was killed in a skirmish, and the grieving Raleigh returned to England, broken in spirit and ready for the execution that awaited him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first of William Harrison Ainsworth's seven "Lancashire novels", the story is based on the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, an unsuccessful attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Ainsworth relied heavily on historical documents describing the trial and execution of the conspirators, of whom Fawkes was one, but he also embellished the known facts. He invented the character of Viviana Radcliffe, daughter of the prominent Radcliffe family of Ordsall Hall - who becomes Fawkes's wife - and introduced gothic and supernatural elements into the story, such as the ability of the alchemist, John Dee, to raise the spirits of the dead"--From Wikipedia, viewed January 16, 2024.

Book excerpt: This biography looks behind the mask of the seventeenth-century rebel who became a controversial folk hero for his role in the infamous Gunpowder Plot. Today, Guy Fawkes is an instantly recognizable symbol of violent rebellion across the globe. Some proudly dress in his image while others burn his effigy. But few people know the story of the man behind the legend. In The Real Guy Fawkes, biographer Nick Holland explores his eventful life and the complicated, dangerous era in which he lived. Born in York in 1570, Fawkes was raised Protestant, yet went on to plan mass murder for the Catholic cause. Prepared to risk everything and endanger countless lives, was he a freedom fighter, a treasonous fanatic, or merely a fool? Holland offers a fresh take on Fawkes’s early life, showing how he was radicalized into a Catholic mercenary and a key member of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. Featuring beautiful illustrations, this accessible and engaging biography combines contemporary accounts with modern analysis to reveal new motivations behind his actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first fully-rounded portrait of the man behind the Gunpowder Plot For hundreds of years Guy Fawkes has been portrayed as perhaps too extreme a figure—a rabid, bloodthirsty Catholic who not only tried to bomb British Parliament but threatened the English way of life. This biography reveals that he was much more than an evil, shadowy conspirator with an axe to grind. John Paul Davis delves into the evidence and makes a convincing case for new thinking on one of English history's greatest enigmas. Not only is the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 thrillingly reteold, but Guy Fawkes can now be seen as a multi-faceted figure—husband, soldier, lover, adveturer, spy, and possibly the most misunderstood of English villains.
