Book Sir Walter Scott s Friends Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sir Walter Scott s Friends Classic Reprint written by Florence Maccunn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Walter Scott's Friends A few words seem necessary to explain certain obvious omissions in this account of Sir Walter Scott's Friends. It was from no failure to recognise her position both in literature and in Scott's regard that I have devoted no chapter to Maria Edgeworth, but simply because, having read Miss Lawless's recently published biography of Miss Edgeworth, I felt that I could neither add to the contents nor rival the charm of that admirable monograph. A similar reason has excluded Scott's kind, bustling friend, Mrs Hughes of Ufiington. The volume of her Journal and Correspondence with Scott is still fresh in the memories of most readers. A contrary reason has, to my regret, caused the omission of one of the clearest of Scott's friends, Lady Abercorn. In the various biographies of the period with which my work has made me familiar, allusions are few and shadowy to Lord and Lady Abercorn, nor, in this case, has it been my good fortune to have access to any unpublished papers or to private information. Of Lock hart it did not seem necessary to write separately, not only because a full and detailed biography is of recent publication, but because implicitly Lockhart's spirit and Lockhart's judgment are present in every paragraph that deals with Scott and Scott's intimates. The gravest omission is that, in a book dealing with Sir Walter's Friends, no place has been found for a chapter on The Dogs. I can only regretfully plead that my pen is wholly inadequate for a subject which only Dr John Brown could have treated duly. To the making of this book have gone more help and kindness than I can sufficiently acknowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Letters of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 1 When I was requested by the Hon. Mrs. Maxwell Scott to make a selection for publication from the correspondence preserved at Abbotsford it was intended that the volumes now given to the public should be confined to letters addressed by Sir Walter to members of his own family but other letters which passed between him and some of his dearest friends having, through the courtesy of their representatives, been placed at my disposal, I felt that they would add greatly to the interest of the work, and many of them have accordingly been introduced. Book The Journal of Sir Walter Scott

Download or read book The Journal of Sir Walter Scott written by Walter Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Sir Walter Scott: From the Original Manuscript at Abbotsford On the death of Sir Walter Scott, in 1832, his entire literary remains were placed at the disposal of his son-in-law, Mr. John Gibson Lockhart. Among these remains were two volumes of a Journal which had been kept by Sir Walter from 1825 to 1832. Mr. Lockhart made large use of this Journal in his admirable life of his father-in-law. Writing, however, so short a time after Scott's death, he could not use it so freely as he might have wished, and, according to his own statement, it was "by regard for the feelings of living persons" that he both omitted and altered; and, indeed, he printed no chapter of the Diary in full. There is no longer any reason why the Journal should not be published in its entirety, and by the permission of the Hon. Mrs. Maxwell-Scott it now appears exactly as Scott left it - but for the correction of obvious slips of the pen, and the omission of some details chiefly of family and domestic interest. The original Journal consists of two small 4to volumes, 9 inches by 8, bound in vellum, and furnished with strong locks. The manuscript is closely written on both sides, and towards the end shows painful evidence of the physical prostration of the writer. The Journal abruptly closes, towards the middle of the second volume, with the following entry - probably the last words ever penned by Scott: by one of the old Pontiffs but which I forget, and so paraded the streets by moonlight to discover if possible some appearance of the learned Sir William Gell or the pretty Mistress Ashley. At length ice found our old servant who guided us to the. lodgings taken by Sir William Gell where all was comfortable a good fire included which our fatigue and the chilliness of the night required. We dispersed as soon as we had taken some food and wine and water. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Sir Walter Scott Sir Walter Scott was born at Edinburgh on the 1sth of August 1771, being the birthday of the great Euro pean hero [napoleon] whose deeds he was afterwards to record. He was the third of a family consisting of Six sons and one daughter. The eldest son, John, attained to a captaincy in an infantry regiment, but was early obliged to retire from service on account of the delicate state of his health. Another elder brother, Daniel, was a sailor, but died in early life. Of him Sir Walter has often been heard to assert, that he was by far the cleverest and most interesting of the whole. Thomas, the next brother to Sir Walter, followed the father's profession, and was for some years factor to the Marquis of Abercorn, but eventually died in Canada in 1822, in the capacity of paymaster to the 7oth Regi ment. Sir Walter himself entertained a fondly high Opinion of the talents of this brother; but it is not borne out by the sense of 'his other friends. He possessed, however, some burlesque humour, and an acquaintance with Scottish manners and character - qualities which were apt to impose a little, and even induced some individuals to believe, for some time, that he, rather than his more gifted brother, was the author of The Novels.' Download or read book The Poems and Plays of Sir Walter Scott Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Walter Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems and Plays of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 1 of 2 The critic who would praise without reserve the poetry of Scott, has not only all the other critics against him, but has to reckon with Sir Walter himself. He frankly stated that he never cared much for his own poetry: he did not think it of sufficient excellence for his children to read, but regarded it as a "light horse" kind of rhyme, fit for young men fond of adventure and of the open air. In his address to William Erskine, his friend and adviser, in the Preface to the Third Canto of Marmion, he speaks as all honest poets must speak to all such friends. These are continually asking a man not to be himself, not to do what heaven has given him the power of doing, but to attempt something else. Erskine wanted Scott to study the classics. "Vos exemplaria Graeca Nocturna versate manu, versate diurna." He suggested topics: "Brunswick's venerable hearse," the "Red Cross Knight," or a revival of Tragedy, which Sir Walter, as enthusiastic for his friends' work as indifferent to his own, thought had been sufficiently revived by Miss Joanna Baillie. He himself was content to - "Ape the measure wild Of tales that charmed me as a child." He describes his early boyhood, the haunted towers he knew - "Methought that still with tramp and clang The gateway's broken arches rang... And ever, by the winter hearth. Old tales I heard of woe and mirth, Of lovers' sleights, of ladies' charms, Of witches' spells, and warriors' arms.' Scottish memories, all the hot-blooded past of the race, these were, these were to be, his topics. His manner was, and was to be, what heaven made it - "Though wild as cloud, ' as stream, as gale, Flow forth, flow unrestrained, my tale." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 5 However this may have been, Scott's answer to Mr. Train proceeded in these words I am now to solicit a favour, which I think your interest in Scottish antiquities will induce you readily to comply with. I am very desirous to have some account of the present state of Turnberry Castle - whether any vestiges of it remain - what is the appearance of the ground - the names of the neighbouring places - and above all, what are the traditions of the place (if any) concerning its memorable surprise by Bruce, upon his return from the coast of Ireland, in the commencement of the brilliant part of his career. The purpose of this is to furnish some hints for notes to a work in which I am now engaged, and I need not say I will have great pleasure in mention ing the source from which I derive my information. I have only to add, with the modest importunity of a lazy correspondent, that the sooner you oblige me with an answer (if you can assist me on the subject), the greater will the obligation be on me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott, Bart, Vol. 6 The lady's fortune was a handsome one, and her guardians exerted the powers with which they were invested, by requiring that the marriage-contract should settle Abbotsford (with reservation of Sir Wal ter's own liferent) upon the afi'ianced parties, in the same manner as Lochore. To this condition he gave a ready assent, and the moment he had signed the deed, he exclaimed, I have now parted with my lands with more pleasure than I ever derived from the acquisition or possession of them; and if I be spared for ten years, I think I may promise to settle as much more again upon these young folks. It was well for himself and his children that his auguries, 'which failed so miserably as to the matter of worldly wealth, were destined to no disappointment as respected considerations of a higher description. I transcribe one of the letters by which he communicated the happy event to the wide circle of friends, who were sure to sympathize in his feelings of paternal satisfaction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Sir Walter Scott, Bart On this ground alone (namely, just ap preciation of character), the merits of the following sketch, if it has any, must rest. In the mere statement of events and dates (which, comparatively, are unimportant), there may be errors, which the writer, up to the present hour, had no opportunity to correct, if he had been solicitous to do so. But, instead of feeling anxious on that ao count, some anachronisms were, in one chapter, purposely introduced for the sake of promoting the author's wish (at the out set) to remain anonymous. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 3 of 4 It may well be supposed that the President of the Boldside Festival and the Abbotsford Hunt, did notomit the good old costum of thejkim. Every November, before quitting the country for Edinburgh, he gave a harvest home, on the most approved model of former days, to all the peasantry on his estate, their friends and kindred, and as many poor neighbours besides as his barn could hold. Here old and young danced from sunset to sunrise, J obn of Skye's bagpipe being relieved at intervals by the violin of some Wandering Willie; - and the laird and all his family were present during the early part of the evening, be and his wife to distribute the contents of the first tub of whisky-lpunch, and his young people to take their due share in the endless reels and hornpipes of the earthen floor. As Mr Merritt has said of him as he appeared at Laird Nippey's kirn of earlier days, to witness the cor diality of his reception might have unbent a misanthrope. He had his private joke for every old wife or gausie carle, his arch compli ment for the ear of every bonny lass, and his hand and his blessing for the head of every little Eppie Daidle from Abbotstown or Broomy lees. Mr. Andrew Shortrede, who was in 1824 learning the printing business in Edin burgh, says Sir Walter came down from the Court of Session to the printing-office the day the intelligence of Byron's death reached Edinburgh, and there dictated to James Ballantyne the article which appeared in the Weekly Journal. I think it was inserted without cor rection, or revisal, except by Ballantyne. From these circumstances, I with others imagined James had himself produced it in some moment of inspiration; but when I afterwards told him how I had been misled, he detailed we more the full, true, and particular history of the article. It must have been apparent, that, by these prolusions, nothing burlesque, or disrespectful, to the authors, was intended, but that they were offered to the public as serious, though certainly very imperfect, imitations of that style of composition, by which each of the writers is supposed to be distinguished.
