Book excerpt: The first biography of Sir George Trevelyan, felt by many to be the grandfather of the movement for spiritual regeneration in Britain.Sir George Trevelyan espoused alternative values long before the phrase became as popular as it is today. After hearing a lecture by a pupil of Rudolf Steiner, Trevelyan declared "The agnosticism of thirty-six years faded like morning mist. The spiritual worldview was clear to me in its glory and wonder."During his lifetime he explored beliefs in angels, the calming effects of crystals and the power of ley lines, alongside organic farming and communal living. In 1971 he set up the Wrekin Trust to promote spiritual education and knowledge, and in 1982 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (the"alternative Nobel Prize") for his contribution towards healing the planet. He inspired and encouraged the emerging synthesis between science and spirituality, putting his faith for the future of society in the transforming power of spiritual awakening. He taught extensively, inspiring communities, universities and spiritual groups worldwide. He died in 1996 at the age of ninety.

Book Sir George Trevelyan Residential Adult Education and the New Age

Download or read book Sir George Trevelyan Residential Adult Education and the New Age written by Sharon Clancy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of British post-Second World War short-term residential adult education, through the lens of the Shropshire Adult Education College (1948-1976) and the tenure of Sir George Trevelyan as its first warden. Trevelyan is acknowledged as the godfather of new-age spiritualism in the UK and is credited with the development of eclectic and esoteric learning opportunities in arts, traditional crafts, culture and ecology. Embodying the spirit of a new national drive for optimism and enterprise in the post-war period, Trevelyan, and his contemporaries at other colleges, took risks and innovated in new pedagogical approaches to adult education, capturing the imagination of hundreds of students, before being stifled by an increasingly restrictive policy framework and financial strictures. The book considers the ideological drivers and tensions behind this unique form of education - its inception, evolution and virtual demise - and seeks to learn from its complex history to inform education in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a rule that no Trevelyan ever sucks up either to the press, or the chiefs, or the “right people”.The world has given us money enough to enable us to do what we think is right. We thank it for that and ask no more of it, but to be allowed to serve it.' G. M. Trevelyan The Trevelyans are unique in British social and political history: a family that for several generations dedicated themselves to the service and chronicling of their country, from the radical, reforming civil servant Charles Edward Trevelyan to the historian G. M. Trevelyan. Often eccentric, priggish, high-minded and utterly self-regarding, they have nonetheless left their mark on our past. This engaging history dispassionately explores the lives and achievements of this unique family and the part they played in shaping the history of Great Britain.

Book The Psychic s Handbook

Download or read book The Psychic s Handbook written by Julie Soskin and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the seer, the priestess and the sage were revered by their community. Their roles were considered sacred - the practising of an art, requiring training and experience like any other art. All these individuals tuned into their 'psycho-spiritual' powers on our behalf. But each of us has always had the ability to draw upon these powers directly, inside ourselves. This book shows us not only how to exploit our psycho-spiritual potential, it also shows us how to navigate the different realms of inner experience that are our birthright. Psycho-spiritual powers can take time and expertise to discern, especially for the novice. How do we know what we are dealing with? Does the 'information' made available to us derive from the subtle energies around the body or does it come from some discarnate being? Or perhaps from an alter ego, the personification of hopes and fears from aspects of our projected selves? This book is drawn from research and first-hand experience from thousands of consultations and teaching sessions over many years. In addition, the author, at the end of each chapter, uses anecdotes to illustrate and enlighten the reader, and these are sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, sometimes philosophical, and always true. Well-implemented psychic and intuitive guidance can help to move the individual towards wholeness - a new dawn based on working with the heart and the energy of unconditional love. This in turn radiates out to affect the whole of our society. Psycho-spiritual powers enlarge our lives beyond measure. 'Julie is preparing those who choose to raise their consciousness and see beyond the immediate.' - The late Eileen Caddy, author and co-founder of the Findhorn Foundation

Book The Phenomenon of Teilhard

Download or read book The Phenomenon of Teilhard written by David H. Lane and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Age writer of the popular Aquarian Conspiracy Marilyn Ferguson observed that many of the leading lights of the New Age movement claim Teilhard as one of the most influential persons in their lives. Other influences acknowledged include C. G. Jung, Aldous Huxley, Swami Muktananda, Thomas Merton, Werner Erhard, and Maharishi Yogi. Indeed, of the 185 New Age leaders surveyed, Teilhard was the most frequently mentioned of any person who had most influenced their thinking. If this is the case, then if we are to understand the New Age movement properly it behooves us to take a careful and critical look at Teilhard de Chardin. David Lane has done precisely this in a clear, well documented, and penetrating way.... In this crucial book David Lane lays bare the philosophical, theological, and scientific failures of Teilhard's New Age enterprise. In a highly documented and insightful scrutiny of Teilhard's cosmic evolution, Lane unveils the apostate Christian roots of one of the most important forerunners of the New Age movement. This is one of the most significant and serious treatments of the modern roots of the New Age in print.

Book Astrology and Popular Religion in the Modern West

Download or read book Astrology and Popular Religion in the Modern West written by Nicholas Campion and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an area of contemporary religion, spirituality and popular culture which has not so far been investigated in depth, the phenomenon of astrology in the modern west. Locating modern astrology historically and sociologically in its religious, New Age and millenarian contexts, Nicholas Campion considers astrology's relation to modernity and draws on extensive fieldwork and interviews with leading modern astrologers to present an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the origins and nature of New Age ideology. This book challenges the notion that astrology is either 'marginal' or a feature of postmodernism. Concluding that astrology is more popular than the usual figures suggest, Campion argues that modern astrology is largely shaped by New Age thought, influenced by the European Millenarian tradition, that it can be seen as an heir to classical Gnosticism and is part of the vernacular religion of the modern west.

Book A Brief Guide to Secret Religions

Download or read book A Brief Guide to Secret Religions written by David V. Barrett and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging book explores the diversity of esoteric and occult beliefs. Neo-Paganism is one of the fastest-growing new religions in the western world where witchcraft or Wicca, Druidry, and Urban Shamanism are thriving. Alongside this there has been an upsurge in New Age ideas of an even wider variety, including astrology, Tarot, numerology, and many others. And then there are members of various schools of occult science, practising High Magic. Why this new interest in old beliefs? Why are millions of educated people today abandoning both the established religion of their parents and 21st century scientific rationalism and turning to magic and esoteric teachings? In their search for spirituality those who follow these paths claim to be applying ancient wisdom to the modern world. The Brief History of Secret Religions, a companion book to The Brief History of Secret Societies, looks at the history and variety of these esoteric movements, where they came from and what they tell us about the world today. Praise for The New Believers: 'an excellent guide to fringe religions that juxtaposes "respectable" movements and those conventionally dismissed as cults.' The Telegraph. 'no-nonsense, comprehensive survey packed with non-judgmental information about the beliefs, aims and activities of such movements. Daily Mail.

The change needed is a shift out of our primarily head-focus into becoming increasingly heart-centred, where we are connected to our hearts and are potentially capable of moving mountains. We are only going to be good activists if we have plenty of heart in our lives - if we are big hearted with a well-activated Heart. A culture of Heart is vital if we are to heal the many wounds and splits that exist between different classes, religions, tribes and nations. The book has been written from a place of great hope and joy, based on knowledge that our world is changing and that the planetary heart is at last awakening.

Book Eco Alchemy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dan McKanan
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0520290054
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Eco Alchemy written by Dan McKanan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a century, the worldwide anthroposophical movement has been a catalyst for environmental activism, helping to bring to life many modern ecological practices such as organic farming, community-supported agriculture, and green banking. Yet the spiritual practice of anthroposophy remains unknown to most environmentalists. A historical and ethnographic study of the environmental movement, Eco-Alchemy uncovers for the first time the profound influences of anthroposophy and its founder, Rudolf Steiner, whose holistic worldview, rooted in esoteric spirituality, inspired the movement. Dan McKanan shows that environmentalism is itself a complex ecosystem and that it would not be as diverse or transformative without the contributions of anthroposophy.
