Book excerpt: Arthur Bliss (1891–1975) was one of the most important British musicians of his age. Born into a family where music played a highly significant role, his talent emerged early. He served with distinction in the Great War, in which he was both injured and gassed. After the War he set the musical world alight with ultra-modern works, earning himself the soubriquet enfant terrible and leading to his first major work, the Colour Symphony. His dual American/British birthright led to a close connection with the USA and marriage to an American girl, Trudy Hoffman, who would be a mainstay of his life. Before long he became the most performed British composer abroad and his portfolio of works included ballet, film (H.G. Wells's Things to Come remains one of the finest film scores), opera, orchestral, chamber, choral works and song. He was a diplomat, a skill that was recognized in many appointments from the Government to travel using music as soft power, notably to Russia in 1956. He served as Director of Music at the BBC from 1942–4, was knighted and soon after appointed Master of the Queen's Music. Bliss was a private figure who stated that the only way to get to know him was through his music. Paul Spicer takes this as his starting point for this pioneering biography, which underlines the timely importance of a complete reappraisal of this important composer's music.

Book excerpt: Handwritten note partial envelope England Sir Arthur Edward Drummond Bliss, CH, KCVO (2 August 1891 - 27 March 1975) was an English composer and conductor. Bliss's musical training was cut short by the First World War, in which he served with distinction in the army. In the post-war years he quickly became known as an unconventional and modernist composer, but within the decade he began to display a more traditional and romantic side in his music. In the 1920s and 1930s he composed extensively not only for the concert hall, but also for films and ballet. In the Second World War, Bliss returned to England from the US to work for the BBC and became its director of music. After the war he resumed his work as a composer, and was appointed Master of the Queen's Music. In Bliss's later years, his work was respected but was thought old-fashioned, and it was eclipsed by the music of younger colleagues such as William Walton and Benjamin Britten. Since his death, his compositions have been well represented on record, and many of his better-known works remain in the repertoire of British orchestras.

Book excerpt: Sir Arthur Bliss (1891-1975) was a leading figure in British music for five decades, and one of the foremost British composers to emerge after the First World War. His early works such as the symphony Morning Heroes, the ballet Checkmate, and the opera The Olympians show the influence of Stravinsky and the French group "Les Six." He gained prominence in the British musical establishment and was made Master of the Queen's Musick in 1953. Bliss was also a prolific writer of articles, reviews, lectures, and broadcasts, which provide a vivid commentary on twentieth-century music, the English Musical Renaissance in particular, and display the characteristic vigor and vitality in keeping with his enfant terrible image of the 1920s. Arranged chronologically with biographical lists, the material ranges from self-analysis to a consideration of the place of music in modern society, and this collection forms a valuable source for the study of his own music and the music of his contemporaries.

Download or read book On Music written by Benjamin Britten and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Britten was a most reluctant public speaker. Yet his contributions were without doubt a major factor in the transformation during his lifetime of the structure of the art-music industry. This book, by bringing together all his published articles, unpublished speeches, drafts, and transcriptions of numerous radio interviews, explores the paradox of a reluctant yet influential cultural commentator, artist, and humanist. Whether talking about his own music, about the role of the artist in society, about music criticism, or wading into a debate on Soviet ideology at the height of the cold war, Britten always gave a performance which reinforced the notion of a private man who nonetheless saw the importance of public disclosure.

Book English Pastoral Music

  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2017-05-30
  • ISBN : 0252099656
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book English Pastoral Music written by Eric Saylor and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering works by popular figures like Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst as well as less familiar English composers, Eric Saylor's pioneering book examines pastoral music's critical, theoretical, and stylistic foundations alongside its creative manifestations in the contexts of Arcadia, war, landscape, and the Utopian imagination. As Saylor shows, pastoral music adapted and transformed established musical and aesthetic conventions that reflected the experiences of British composers and audiences during the early twentieth century. By approaching pastoral music as a cultural phenomenon dependent on time and place, Saylor forcefully challenges the body of critical opinion that has long dismissed it as antiquated, insular, and reactionary.

Download or read book The Music of Space written by Chris Carberry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early days of motion picture production, film scores have helped define our emotional and aesthetic perception of stories on screen--particularly with space movies and television. The music from The Day the Earth Stood Still, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and others has helped define the public's awareness of space almost as much as the films themselves. In some cases, they have redefined the norms of film music. Star Wars not only revived the popularity of orchestral film scores but also helped stimulate an increased public interest in classical orchestral music around the world. This work explores the music and the composers who have helped define the sound of space for over a century, transforming how we perceive space and even inspiring greater interest in space exploration. This book also details how music has been performed and played in space since the early days of the "space race."
