Book Shakespeare Jubilees 1769 2014

Download or read book Shakespeare Jubilees 1769 2014 written by Christa Jansohn and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of essays on Shakespeare Jubilees around the world, from 1769 to 2014. The contributions range from the elaborate celebrations in Shakespeare's hometown to more modest festivities elsewhere; and from ambitious, theatrical, and politically loaded demonstrations to nationally colored, culturally distinct, and idiosyncratic commemorations. The variety of ways in which geographically distant countries have remembered Shakespeare has never before been the object of a comparative study. The book's essays will throw new light on Shakespeare as a shared international heritage. Book Ghosts of the Revolution in Mexican Literature and Visual Culture

Download or read book Ghosts of the Revolution in Mexican Literature and Visual Culture written by Erica Segre and published by Peter Lang Limited, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The official centenary commemorating the Mexican Revolution of 1910 provided scholars with an opportunity to consider memorialization and its legacies and 'afterimages' in the twentieth century through to the present time. This collection of new essays, commissioned from experts based in Mexico, Europe and the United States, plays on the interrelated notions of 'revisitation', haunting, residual traces and valediction to interrogate the Revolution's multiple appearances, reckonings and reconfigurations in art, photography, film, narrative fiction, periodicals, travel-testimonies and poetry, examining key constituencies of creative media in Mexico that have been involved in historicizing, contesting or evading the mixed legacies of the Revolution. The interplay of themes, practices and contexts across the chapters (ranging from the 1920s through to the present day) draws on interdisciplinary thinking as well as new findings, framing the volume's discourse with a deliberately multi-dimensional approach to an often homogenized topic. The contributors' scholarly referencing of artists, novelists, poets, photographers, foreign correspondents, critics, filmmakers and curators is detailed and wide-ranging, creating new juxtapositions that include some rarely studied material.

Book Siqueiros Paisajista

Download or read book Siqueiros Paisajista written by Irene Herner and published by . This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: During the period in 1932 when David Alfaro Siqueiros was in Los Angeles, he painted three, possibly four murals: Street Meeting at the Chouinard Art Institute; América Tropical at El Pueblo de Los Angeles; and Portrait of Mexico Today at a private residence in Pacific Palisades. A possible fourth mural was painted at the John Reed Club in Hollywood, but was largely undocumented and likely uncompleted at the time of his departure. While in Los Angeles, Siqueiros discovered a number of new materials and technologies for painting large-scale murals. Always an innovator, this period of time was particularly rich in his career, and the work he did in Los Angeles laid the groundwork for his later murals in Mexico and South America. As an integral component of the GCI's project to conserve, América Tropical, a bibliography was compiled over the course of the project. This selected bibliography focuses on the murals painted by Siqueiros in Los Angeles in 1932 with additional references on materials and techniques used by Siqueiros, as relevant for context. It spans the time period from 1932, when Siqueiros came to Los Angeles, to 2012, when the conservation, protection and interpretation of the mural, América Tropical, was completed by the GCI and the City of Los Angeles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1964 and 1971, the Mexican mural painter David Alfaro Siqueiros produced The March of Humanity on Earth and Toward the Cosmos in Mexico City, his last major project and the largest mural in the world. This illustrated book mounts a careful study of the painting, which it sees as marking the end of the Mexican mural movement. The main purpose of the book is to place the mural into the social-historical context of the period of its production. Due to this approach, the mural is seen not only as a work of art, but also as a symbol and carrier of Mexican political ideology, especially as it concerns the government's attempts to continue presenting the Mexican Revolution of 1910 as the source and basis of contemporary and future social, political, and economic policy. Professor Folgarait's book provides a fascinating case-study highlighting the conflict of modernistic and naturalistic trends in art, and makes an important contribution to the study of Mexican art of the twentieth century and to the general topic of the relationship of art to politics.
