The Lutz family moves into 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, Long Island, New York only to flee from the house after 28 days, which will go on to inspire the story of The Amityville Horror. In Salem, Massachusetts, AKA the “Witch City,” a young woman is building a life for herself and her young daughter, unaware that forces outside of her world are converging to drag them into a series of crimes that breach the boundaries of horror. Haunted by a past that more than brushed up against true evil she is challenged to move forward with promise and hope. As she is drawn into the miasma of crimes that test the skill of law enforcement she comes to realize that people around her are also burdened with sins that are erupting into the light and will change everything for everyone. As if that wasn’t enough her daughter is a special child whose remarkable powers constantly force her to walk the thin, tenuous line between darkness and light. The mother and daughter find themselves at the center of a diverse group of people who have their own secrets and sins, and who may or may not be involved in the crimes taking place in the infamous town in which they live. All concerned in the roiling, interlocking experiences that defined their pasts and might define their futures find themselves battling the consequences of sin in the struggle to overcome evil and emerge into the light.

Book excerpt: The novel gives a search by an English prof. (Jim Truebig) through the past histories of two friends who do not know each other. He suspects similar past histories, and comes to believe that they did indeed share in some terrible experiences. They suffered--and he comes to a realization of that. Both were incest-victims: he must learn to think about that. The novel is a story of how he goes about doing this: Stella May Jones and Osvaldo Burroughs come through vividly in the process--first-rate people hobbled by early-life trauma. This is an anti-incest book.

Book Sinners in the Presence of a Loving God

Download or read book Sinners in the Presence of a Loving God written by R. Zachary Manis and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a perfectly good and loving God consign anyone to eternal suffering in hell? In Sinners in the Presence of a Loving God, R. Zachary Manis examines in detail the various facets of the problem of hell, considers the reasons why the usual responses to the problem are unsatisfying, andsuggests how an adequate solution to the problem can be constructed.Historically, there are four standard explanations of the nature and purpose of hell: traditionalism, annihilationism, the choice model, and universalism. In Manis's assessment, all are deficient in some crucial respect. The alternative view that he develops and defends, the divine presence model, stands within the tradition that understands hell to be a state of eternal conscious suffering, but, Manis contends, avoids the worst problems of its competitors. The key idea is that the suffering of hell is not the result of a divine act that aims to inflict it, but rather is the way in which asinful creature necessarily experiences the unmitigated presence of a holy God. Heaven and hell are not two "places" to which the saved and damned are consigned, respectively, but rather are two radically different ways in which different persons will experience the same reality of God'somnipresence once the barrier of divine hiddenness is finally removed.
