Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive survey of the monotype in America, Singular Impressions discusses the work of more than one hundred artists who, attracted by the medium's intimacy and freedom, made prints ranging from the romantic, pastoral landscapes of Bostonian Charles Alvah Walker to the Savarin-can "self-portraits" of Jasper Johns. Whether created as a brief fling with the technique by John Singer Sargent or as a sustained exploration of its subtleties by Maurice Prendergast, monotypes have attracted countless artists who usually work in other media. Describing how artists invented new methods and variations on the basic process, Joann Moser analyzes the role of the monotype in the "Black and White" exhibitions of New York's Salmagundi Club, at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, and in 1920s artists' communities from Provincetown to Taos. It was not until the 1970s that the monotype emerged as an alternative to the technical, structured enterprise that printmaking had become. Recognizing no rules or boundaries, artist pushed the previous limits of the medium to create a richer, more complex, more versatile means of expression.

Book Science the Singular and the Question of Theology

Download or read book Science the Singular and the Question of Theology written by Richard A. Lee Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-01-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, the Singular, and the Question of Theology explores the role that the singular plays in the theories of science of Robert Grosseteste, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, Marsilius of Inghen, and Pierre d'Ailly. It pursues the question specifically in relation to the question of whether theology is a science. The work argues that the main issue in debates concerns whether theology is a science and how to provide a 'rational ground' for existing singulars. Science, the Singular, and the Question of Theology exposes how, on the eve of modernity, existing singulars were freed from the constraints of rational ground.

Book excerpt: Algernon Blackwood's 'Four Weird Tales' is a collection of supernatural stories that delve into the unknown, the mysterious, and the inexplicable. Blackwood's literary style is characterized by a subtle build-up of tension, creating an atmosphere of dread and unease that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. These tales are rooted in the late 19th and early 20th century gothic tradition, drawing on themes of the supernatural, the occult, and the uncanny. The stories are intricately woven, with richly developed characters and vivid descriptions that transport readers to eerie and unsettling settings. Blackwood's ability to blend psychological horror with elements of the supernatural sets 'Four Weird Tales' apart as a standout work of the genre. Algernon Blackwood, a master of the supernatural and horror genres, drew on his own experiences and travels to inspire his writing. His deep interest in the occult and the unknown is reflected in the haunting and otherworldly stories contained in this collection. Blackwood's unique perspective and storytelling skills have cemented his legacy as a classic author of weird fiction. I highly recommend 'Four Weird Tales' to readers who enjoy atmospheric and thought-provoking supernatural fiction. Blackwood's ability to evoke a sense of dread and wonder makes this collection a must-read for fans of the gothic and supernatural genres.

Book Proust Photography and the Time of Life

Download or read book Proust Photography and the Time of Life written by Suzanne Guerlac and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an engagement with the philosophies of Proust's contemporaries, Félix Ravaisson, Henri Bergson, and Georg Simmel, Suzanne Guerlac presents an original reading of Remembrance of Things Past (A la recherche du temps perdu). Challenging traditional interpretations, she argues that Proust's magnum opus is not a melancholic text, but one that records the dynamic time of change and the complex vitality of the real. Situating Proust's novel within a modernism of money, and broadening the exploration through references to cultural events and visual technologies (commercial photography, photojournalism, pornography, the regulation of prostitution, the Panama Scandal, and the Dreyfus Affair), this study reveals that Proust's subject is not the esthetic recuperation of loss but rather the adventure of living in time, on both the individual and the social level, at a concrete historical moment.
